Idaho Dismantles Southern Oregon: MCLA Week 4 Recap

There is no denying that MCLA lacrosse doesn’t receive the amount of coverage that it deserves. In effort to fix this issue, Lacrosse All Stars has partnered up with the Varsity Club Lacrosse team to cover everything MCLA this season.

This coverage will include game recaps, program interviews, and of course gear reviews.

Following up his last MCLA article, Andrew Golden is back getting us caught up on last week’s games.

Monday, February 21st 


#16 (DII) Utah State: 11

#8 North Dakota State: 4

Utah State left on a flight at 1:30 am on Sunday to Minnesota and upset NDSU less than 24 hours later to get their first win of the season. Six different Aggies scored and goalie Bostin Preisler (13S, 77%) was amazing in net. Ryan Donabauer (7 GB) and Mitch Rogers (3G) played well for the Bison.

UConn: 10

#20 (DII) Bridgewater State: 5

BSU kept it close against DI UConn most of the game but fell in the end. Nick McKenna (3G) led the scoring for the Bears. Matt Williams (14S, 74%) and Tyler Osit (3G, 1A) helped lead UConn to a 1-0 start.

Tuesday, February 22nd 


#1 BYU: 10

Westminster College (NCAA DII): 9

BYU shows why they’re the #1 team in the country by beating a very good NCAA DII team. 

#16 (DII) Utah State: 7

#12 Saint John’s: 6

Utah State pulls off back-to-back upsets after flying halfway across the country to play them. Hunter Combe (2G, 1A) and Spencer Bishop (2G) led the scoring for the Aggies. Isak Johnson (3G, 1A) and Ben Koesters (3G) were great for the Johnnies.

Thursday, February 24th


#16 (DII) Utah State: 8 (OT)

#1 St. Thomas: 7

Just when you thought Utah State couldn’t pull off a bigger upset than before, they upset the #1 team in the country and the defending National Champs in one of the best games of the year so far. After being down 7-5 in the 4th Cooper Williams scored with 47 seconds left to make it 7-6, and then Brock Arbon scored with 23 seconds left to tie it. Garret Hoch (4G) played well for the Tommies who look to bounce back against Air Force.

Friday, February 25th


#10 South Carolina: 14

#6 Chapman: 12

Huge win on the road for the Gamecocks who improve to 4-2 after only playing ranked teams so far. Liam Nelson (4G, 2A) played well for Chapman. 

#20 Arizona: 14

#12 Colorado State: 9 

Arizona gets a solid ranked win over a very good CSU team. Blake Storey (3G, 1A) and Mason DePaolo (4G) led the offense and Ian Takas (7GB) led the defense. Cole Koeberer (5G, 1A) and Ryan Springer (1G, 3A) kept it close for the Rams. 

#16 (DII) Utah State: 12

#6 (DII) Minnesota Duluth: 6

Utah State goes 4-0 in 5 days against some of the best teams in DII. Berklee Baskin (14S, 70%) was great in net while Cooper Williams (4G) and Tycen Biggs (7GB) led the offense and defense. Utah State looks to make a run at nationals after winning the RMLC in 2019. Connor Nadeau had a hattrick for the Bulldogs. 

#8 Clemson: 18

#13 Georgia: 12

Clemson shows why there the #8 team in the country by beating a very good Georgia team. Look for the Tigers to make a run at the National Championship this year. Sam Tariche (4G, 1A) and Garrett Brennan (5G, 1A) led the Tigers’ offense.

#3 Georgia Tech: 11

Texas Christian: 3

Georgia Tech easily takes care of TCU behind faceoff man Aaron Piszczek who only lost 1 faceoff all day. Sam Eck (4G) and Gino Pagliaro (77%, 10S) handled business on the offensive and defensive ends. 

Auburn: 15

Tennessee: 11 

A close one between two teams looking to compete for the SELC title. Matt Oswald (5G) and Lloyd Delatour (3G, 3A) were solid for Auburn while Jack Sullivan (3G, 2A) and Ethan Holthaus (2G, 2A) kept it close for Tennesse. 

#11 (DII) Montana State: 20

Colorado Mines: 2

Montana State shows why they’re one of the best teams in DII. 

#24 (DII) MSU Denver: 12

Fort Lewis: 9

The Roadrunners stay undefeated against MCLA teams after a close one against Fort Lewis. Carter Machado (3G, 1A) and Braydan Hiebert (2G, 2A) stood out on offense. Cullen Robinette and Patrick Lindsay each had a hattrick for Fort Lewis. 

Missouri: 16

Texas Tech: 1

Mizzou stays undefeated in the LSA. Cam Gosselin (10GB, 92%), Joe Ripson (5G, 1A), Zach Stroisch (4G), and Connor Jones (4A) were great for the Tigers

#21 UC San Diego: 13

San Diego: 7

UCSD shows why they earned a preseason ranking in their first game of the season by beating a solid USD team. Austin Weinshelbaum (80%, 14GB, 1G, 2A) and Austin Ortel (3G, 3A) stood out for the Tritons while Brian Abrahamson (3G) played well for the Toreros.

Temple: 18

South Florida: 10

Temple makes the trip down to Florida to give USF their first loss and their 1st win since moving to the ALC. Ryan Kerr (1G, 3A) kept the Bulls in the game. 

Saturday, February 26th


#1 (DII) St. Thomas: 15

Air Force: 8

Game was played at 6:00 am for some reason. Air Force’s first MCLA game ever so pretty good result despite the loss. Ryan Solz (5G), Garrett Hoch (4G), and Cabe Maskevich (2G, 2A) played well for the Tommies.  

#11 Montana State: 20

Fort Lewis: 4

Montana State continues to dominate the RMLC DII. Cullen Robinette (2G) led the scoring for Fort Lewis.

Western Washington: 17

Idaho: 7

WWU stays undefeated in PNCLL DII. Michael Kihanya (4G, 1A) and Patrick Maddigan (4G, 2A) played well for the Vikings.

Wyoming: 12

Colorado Mines: 11

Wyoming gets their first win of the season. Nate Blaszek (4G) and Nick Burker (2G, 2A) played well for the Cowboys.

Northwest Nazarene: 27

Southern Oregon: 2

Keaton Bean (5G, 8A), Brayden Worthington (7G, 1A), and Austin Stutz (3G, 5A) led NNU’s route of SOU.

#17 Minnesota: 21

Illinois: 17

Minnesota moves to 2-0 in the UMLC and stays undefeated, Illini lose their first game. Ian Obert (1G, 7A) and Jonas Waskosky (8G) stood out for the Gophers, and Kevin McCarthy (5G, 1A) played well for Illinois. 

#17 (Post Game) Iowa State: 10

Iowa (GLLL): 7

Iowa State shows why they made the Post Game Top 20 over teams like UNC and Brown with this gritty win over in-state rival Iowa. 

Texas A&M: 13

Southern Methodist: 8

Texas A&M stays undefeated in the LSA with help from Reed Cameron (3G, 2A) and Connor Legg (2G, 1A).

Coastal Carolina: 21

Georgia Southern: 11

Kyle Patton (78%, 21S), Parker Eysaman (3G, 7A), and Cameron Fagan (3G, 3A) lead CCU over Sun Belt rival Georgia Southern. Henry Layman (6G, 2A) played well for the Eagles.

Stanford: 12

#15 (DII) UC Davis: 3

Stanford bounces back after three straight losses. UC Davis falls to 1-3 however undefeated in DII still. Brian Hanley (100%, 12GB, 1G) and Dash Tsai (4G, 1A) stood out for Stanford, Jonathan Cirelli (2G) for UCD.

Northeastern: 14

Buffalo: 11

Big CLC matchup in Boston, Trevor McNamara (3G, 3A) led the Huskies and Jacob Robinson (3G, 2A) led the Bulls. 

Texas Christian: 13

Tennessee: 12

TCU comes up with a close one against a solid UT team.

#10 South Carolina: 10

Grand Canyon: 9

South Carolina travels all the way to Arizona to beat one of the best unranked teams. Six Gamecocks scored including a hattrick from Pat Reilly. Nick Whittal (3G) kept the Lopes in it all game.

#19 Southern California: 13

UC Santa Barbara: 12

USC keeps rolling against a UCSB team that’s just outside the Top 25. Freshman Antoine Moats (3G, 4A) dominated and had the GWG. Goalie Michael Smat (61%, 19S) and LSM Donovan Ecconn (8GB) played well too. Isaac Baker (3G, 1A) and Lucas Menendez (2G, 1A) played well for the Gauchos.

#14 Virginia Tech: 18

West Virginia: 6 

VT gets a big ALC win thanks to 2021 ALC ROTY Aidan Smith (4G, 3A) and Daniel Gafney (82%, 11GB). 

UC Irvine: 19 

Biola: 7

Anteaters’ Welcome Back Tour is going well so far with some big wins like this. Taylor Fialkowski (8G, 2A) continues to be a scoring machine.

Oregon State: 11

Washington: 5

OSU starts conference play 1-0. UW had five different goal scorers.

#9 Florida: 11

Temple: 5

Former UF coach Ryan Winters comes back to Gainesville as an assistant at Temple. James Dugan (4G) and Logan Rohack (1G, 2A) played well for the Gators.

Point Loma Nazarene: 7

San Diego: 3

PLNU starts their first MCLA season 2-1 with a solid win over a good USD team. Weston Priestley (1G, 1A) played well for the Toreros.

Texas A&M (DII): 10

Baylor: 9

Aggies beat a good Baylor team thanks to ground balls and Kellen Goodall’s hattrick. Brady Vincent (2G, 1A) kept the Bears in it.

Kansas: 16

Texas Tech: 1

Kansas dominates behind Jack Troll (4G), Justin Bodie (2G, 2A) and Henry Hogan (2G, 3A).

#23 (DII) Cal State San Marcos: 16

Cal State Fullerton: 3

CSSM shows why they’re in the Top 25. Titans had three different goal scorers.

#21 Santa Clara: 12

Oregon: 5

Broncos stay undefeated thanks to Louis Harvey (18S, 78%) and Aidan Oates (3G, 2A) and Carson Lombardi (1G, 4A) 

#10 Florida Gulf Coast: 14

South Florida: 6

Eagles stay undefeated with a big DI win. Attack duo of Christian Cucinotta (4G, 1A) and Jayson Andino (1G, 5A) led the scoring. Ryan Kerr (3G, 2A) and Kenneth Klubnik (3G, 1A) played well for USF.

#17 (DII) Missouri State: 11

#12 (DII) Saint John’s: 4

Bears bounce back after a tough week last week to get a big DII win. Johnnies have four different scorers for each of their goals.

#25 Wake Forest: 16

Stonehill: 6

All three Deacon goalies had at least four saves and a 66% SV% while Dan Clifford (3G, 2A) played well on offense. Skyhawks give a solid effort after their road trip to NC.

East Carolina: 10

UNC Wilmington: 9

DII Seahawks make it a close one against DI ECU. Scout Phillip (5G) and Will Cordes (2G, 3A) played well for UNCW. Zac Blankenship (68%, 11GB) played well for the Pirates.

Rice: 12

Texas A&M Galveston:

Charlie Lockyer (2G, 1A) helps Rice win this DIII matchup.

Creighton: 13

Kansas State: 6

Chuck Altier (4G, 1A) and Nikko Graff (2G, 3A) gets the Bluejays the win.

#4 (DII) Dayton: 15

#8 (DII) North Dakota State: 9

Quinn Thompson (1G, 4A) leds the Flyers offense and Ben Wilch (8GB) leds the defense as Dayton takes this UMLC DII matchup. Ryan Donabauer (9GB) continues to donimate on the ground for the Bison and Nate Germaine (3G, 1A) leads the offense. 

#24 New Hampshire: 11

Maine: 4

UNH dominates DII Maine with help from Brendan Pearl (3G, 1A) and Paul Antonietti (3G, 1A). Maine plays their first MCLA game in a couple years since leaving for a little bit.

#8 Clemson: 15

#3 Georgia Tech: 8

Clemson with one of the biggest upsets of the year behind Garret Brennan, John Holcomb, Sean Tariche, Will Marrapodi, and William Ciccarelli who all had 4+ points. Faceoff duo of Kristofer Casey (69%) and Alec Frank (50%) held Aaron Piszczek to just 45% after he’s been averaging at least 70% in every game. Clemson goalie Danny Laible (16S, 67%) held down the defense. Brooks Baro (5G) led the offense for GT.

#4 Liberty: 18

Pittsburgh: 10

Pitt put up a good fight against one of the best teams in the country behind defensive midfielder Alex Gonzalez (63%, 9GB, 1G, 4A)

Purdue: 17

Central Michigan: 1

Purdue gets their second UMLC win, Nick Korell (3G, 2A) and Ryan Schellin (4G, 2A) led the offense, Jack Mattson (78%, 8GB) was great from the X. Andrew Golden had two nice ground balls at the end of the game. Will Ruit (22S) played will for the Chippewas.

#12 Colorado State: 14

San Diego State: 13

Ryan Springer (4G), Jared McFerran (3G, 1A), and Cole Koeberer (2G, 2A) led the Rams offensive in this close win. Aztecs show they can be a dangerous team in the MCLA. Seth Gummel (1G, 3A) and Bradley Kishaba (3G) led their offense. 

#13 Georgia: 18

Alabama: 7

Georgia wins over their rival to continue to show why they’re a ranked team.

#17 (DII) Missouri State: 19

#4 (DII) Dayton:16

Missouri State gets a huge MCLA DII upset against an always solid Dayton team. Eric Webber (2G, 2A) led the Flyers scoring.

#7 Concordia Irvine: 10

#2 California: 9

Another huge upset, this time the Eagles beat Cal on the road. Defense was outstanding, Tyler Schweickert (22S, 71%) and poles held attack duo Jake Pistotnik (2A) and Brendan Cook (1A) in check. Cade Poe (90%, 13GB, 1G) shows he’s one of the best faceoff guys in the league and Troy Hofer (3G, 2A) leads the scoring. Micah Grim (3G, 1A) led the scoring for the Golden Bears.

#13 (DII) Florida Atlantic: 13

Miami: 11

Miami almost takes this one against a very good Owls team. Goalie David Barr (16S) played well along with Thomas Delkin (3G, 1A) and Trevor Yorino (3G, 1A). Brendan Huff (72%, 12GB), Drake Summers (4G, 3A) and Harrison Spilker (15S, 65%) all played well as usual. 

Sunday, February 27th


#1 (DII) St. Thomas: 20

Illinois: 11

St. Thomas easily handles MCLA DI UMLC opponent Illinois. Nick Gosstola (4G, 1A), Kevin McCarthy (3G, 2A), and Luke St. John (68%) played well for the Illini. Cabe Maskevich (6G, 2A) went off for the Tommies.

#11 (DII) Montana State: 19

#24 (DII) MSU Denver: 12

Alexander Brown (5G, 2A) and Joseph Borup (1G, 4A) led the Bobcats offense while Braeden Peters (3G, 2A) and Brayden Hiebert (3G, 2A) led the offense as well as the faceoffs for the Roadrunners. These two are looking like the best in the RMLC DII.

#8 (DII) North Dakota State: 10

#17 (DII) Missouri State: 9

NDSU gets a big DII win after dropping one to Utah State earlier in the week. Chase Schlorhaufer (3G) led the Bison and Owen Kehoe (4G) led the Bears.

#9 College of Idaho: 41

Southern Oregon: 2

Lot of controversy behind this one so not really going to get into it. Casey Davis (10G, 16A).

Saint Mary’s: 26

Cal Poly-Humboldt: 4

Gales had five different 6+ point scorers.

#22 UNC Charlotte: 21

Stonehill: 6

Nick Ferens (5G, 3A) and Connor Hudson (5G, 1A) lead the 49ers to a 1-0 start in MCLA DII.

#25 Wake Forest: 12

UNC Wilmington: 7

Dan Clifford (5G, 2A) and Ben Snavley (8GB) led the Deacons offensive and defense. UNCW puts up a good fight led by Ryan Mannarino (3G) and Lucas Drum (7GB).

#21 Santa Clara: 9

Oregon State: 4

Broncos moves to 4-0 behind Trevor Williams (4G, 2A) and Louis Harvey (17S, 81%). Beavers put up a good fight against a very good Santa Clara team. 

Chico State: 16

San Jose State: 3

Chico State dominates in every way Andrew Ediger (10S, 90%), Carson Carey (4G, 3A), and Bailey Ensor (3G, 5A) lead the team.

Claremont: 17

Santa Barbara CC: 11

Bryce Kelly (83%, 17GB, 1G, 1A) and Alex Albrecht (1G, 5A) led the Cougars over a good SBCC team.

UCLA: 9

#21 (DII) UC San Diego: 8

UCSD almost wins against MCLA DI UCLA. Nick Krolikowski (4G) and Austin Weinshelbam (73%, 6GB, 1G, 1A) played well for the Tritons.

Miami (OH): 21

Central Michigan: 3

Alex Morris (7G, 3A) and Chris Eifert (6G, 1A) lead the Redhawks in their dominant win. 

#25 Arizona State: 21

San Diego State: 4

Arizona State destroys a SDSU team that almost beat #12 Colorado State the day before to move to 3-0, They face a tough challenge in Clemson and Virginia Tech next week at home. Braden Rome (4G, 3A) led the Sun Devils scoring. Brian Davito (2G) led the Aztecs scoring.

Auburn: 19

Texas Christian: 6

Tanner Price (2G, 3A), Michael Malone (4G), and Erik Diedrichs (4G, 2A) led the Tigers offense to a solid win.

#4 Dayton: 10

#12 Saint John’s: 5

Dayton starts off 2-0 in conference play behind Quinn Thompson (4G) and Ben Wilch (8GB). Jake McCarthy (18S, 64%) played well for the Johnnies in net.

Northeastern: 23

#20 Bridgewater State: 15

Nick McKenna (7G) and Eric MacDonald (5G) show out for the Bears, but it’s not enough to beat MCLA DI Northeastern. Huskies have 13 point scorers led by Zeb Tilton (4G, 2A).

#14 Virginia Tech: 16

Pittsburgh: 9

Aidan Smith (6G) with another dominate performance to give VT their 3rd ALC win. Reed Seybolt (3G, 2A) played well for the Panthers.

Temple: 11

Central Florida: 10  

Owls go 2-1 on their Florida road trip. Kyle Hasenfus (1G, 3A) and Brennan Fountain (3G) played well for the Knights.

Indiana: 24

Butler: 7

IU beats DIII Butler in the Bulldogs first MCLA in a couple years since leaving the league. Kai Liska (3G, 1A) played well for Butler. 

#20 Arizona: 13

#6 Chapman: 12

Huge upset in the desert led by Max Bergamo (5G), Thomas Atella (18S, 62%), and Ian Takas (8GB). Wildcats move to 5-1 with 2 ranked wins. Chapman falls to 0-3 with all ranked losses.

Idaho: 9

Central Washington: 7

Vandals first win since 2019. Hunter Graham (4G, 2A) and Keegan Sullivan (3G, 2A) keep it close for CWU.

Texas A&M (DII): 11

Texas A&M Galveston: 6

Aggies go 2-0 on the weekend behind Brent Harwood (3G, 1A) and Connor Cooper (4G). 

#5 Boston College: 11

Buffalo: 6

BC wins their CLC opener. Buffalo gives a good effort against one of the best MCLA teams in the country.

#4 Liberty: 14

West Virginia: 6

Thomas Pinel (3G, 1A) and Will Geary (2G, 3A) pace the Flames win on ESPN+. West Virginia is probably playing the toughest schedule of any unranked team so credit to them.

#9 Florida: 22

#10 (DII) Florida Gulf Coast: 5

Florida dominates a very good MCLA DII team in FGCU. 18 different point scorers led by Will Halligan (5A). Grant Schafer (64%, 34S) plays very well despite the loss, Christian Cucinotta (2G) leads the scoring. 

UConn: 22

Southern Conn. State: 1

16 different Huskies score against DIII SCSU. Tyler Filley has their lone goal.
