Rhino Lacrosse to Offer 30 Camps Across America

Rhino Lacrosse has some exciting news to share with you!

As we head into the new year, you will see a new look for Rhino Lacrosse. Moving forward, Rhino Lacrosse has our sights set on becoming the #1 Lacrosse Camp company in the country. In 2022, we will offer approximately 30 camps across the country, launching several new additions alongside our previous locations. We have also joined forces with Summit Lacrosse Ventures to power the backend of Rhino Lacrosse. Summit Lacrosse Ventures is a leader in nationwide lacrosse events and programs for boys, girls, men, and women, with a clear focus on the responsible and sustainable growth of the game. Rhino Lacrosse has been working side by side with SLV for years as we partner on the Saratoga Lacrosse Shootout. Kevin Leveille, an owner of Summit and the Event and Brand Director, is a very good friend of mine. The SLV group has been awesome to work with, which has made this decision and transition very easy.

Going forward, the great SLV team will handle customer service, emails, newsletters and behind the scenes operations for Rhino Lacrosse Camps. This will only enhance our camps and provide you with an unparalleled experience when it comes to summer lacrosse camps. I will be focusing on the on-field product- the training, the coaching, the experience. I will continue to hire the top coaches across the country to teach all Rhino camp participants. Joining with Summit Lacrosse Ventures is a very important step forward in enhancing the camp experience and we can’t wait for what the future holds.

As for other programs that Rhino has offered in the past (tournaments, clinics, leagues, Snow Game, etc.) will be moved over to our new website, www.upstatelacrosse.com. Registration for all three locations of the Snow Game will still be live throughout the transition and all other programming will be updated and live online in the coming days.

You may also be wondering about the Rhino USA National Team Experience; this will also be held on our new platform under the name Powell USA. We look forward to representing the Powell Lacrosse brand and offering the same high-level experience that was Rhino USA in the past. We are accepting applications online for all those boys in the grad years of 2023-2026 through March 31, 2022!

We are beyond excited for the future of both Rhino Lacrosse and Upstate Lacrosse! Thank you for being a part of the Rhino family and we look forward to having you a part of the Upstate family! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

One state – Upstate.

Yale-Duke Championship Predictions

With our Men’s DI Championship Challenge underway, I thought it would be fun to share my Yale-Duke Championship Predictions. The Challenge is something cool that we have put together just in time for this year’s NCAA Division I tournament took place. Assuming you guys like, we are excited to do this more often!

So, here are Yale-Duke Championship predictions. You think you can beat me? Good luck…

Happy Memorial Day, Lacrosse Family!

RP’s Yale-Duke Championship Predictions

yale-duke championship predictionsWho will win the first face-off of the game?

RP’s Pick = Yale

The Bulldogs Conor Mackie is a stud – currently 7th in the country at the X winning 63% of his draws.

Who will score first in the game?

RP’s Pick = Yale

Both Yale and Duke have scored 58 first quarter goals. Crazy! So this turns into a heads or tails type question. Watching Yale’s start against Albany has made up my mind for me.

Will a team score within the first 2 minutes of the game?

RP’s Pick = Yes

Yale was on fire and had an explosive start against Albany. I believe they will have a similar start against Duke and might even have two goals in the first two minutes of the game.

Will the first goal of the game be scored by a player who has over 20 goals on the year?

RP’s  Pick = No

Mackie has only 3 goals on the year. My prediction is Conor wins one out the front early and sticks one.

Albany vs Yale 2018 NCAA Semifinals Ryan Conwell
Photo: Ryan Conwell / LaxAllStars.com

Will Yale be man up before Duke?

RP’s Pick = No

I think that Yale will have an early push on the offensive end that will lead to a Duke penalty – a Blue Devil will head to the sin bin first. Tough question because both clubs are so well coached and realize they need to stay out of the box in order to be successful.

Regarding goalies, will Duke have more saves than yale?

RP’s Pick = Yes

Duke goalie Danny Fowler has a save percentage of 54% and the Yale net minder Jack Starr has a 47.9 stopper percentage.  I’m playing the percentages on this one.

Will a defenseman or long stick middie score in the game?

RP’s Pick = Yes

Neither team has a player that really comes to mind in the game – no Joel White or Brodie Merrill in this one. But I will say this Championship Game always produces fireworks. I’m not sure what pole it will be but after looking in my crystal ball I do see it happening.

Will Ben Reeves & Jackson Morrill (Yale) score more goals in the game than Justin Guterding & Brad Smith (Duke)?

RP’s Pick = No

Good question here; I’m liking Guterding to have a big day and Smith will bang in a few himself.  Yale will have more balance and get more contributions from their supporting cast. My vote goes against the stats on this one.

Reeves & Morrill have combined for 101 goals & 81 assist: Total = 182 points

Guterding & Smith have combined for 92 goals & 81 assist: Total = 173 points

Duke vs Maryland 2018 NCAA Semifinals Ryan Conwell
Photo: Ryan Conwell / LaxAllStars.com

Will Duke have a better clear percentage at the end of the game than Yale?

RP’s Pick = Yes

After seeing how Yale was in the riding game against Albany is hard for me to take Duke in this one – but I have to take a few risk and going with the Blue Devils on this one is risky. This is a toss up.

Duke is 15th in the country at 89.3%

Yale is 40th in the country at 86.9%

Will any goals be scored less than 10 seconds after a face-off?

RP’s Pick = Yes

I’m thinking that Mackie goes out the front early in the first quarter and sticks it within 10 seconds.

How many total goals will be scored in the first quarter (combined goals for both teams)?

RP’s Pick = 5 goals or more

Gotta play the numbers on this one. Both teams have scored 58 first quarter goals; divide that by 19 games and you get 3 and a little change – gotta go with the over on this one.

How many total goals will be scored in the first half (combined goals for both teams)?

RP’s Pick = 10 goals or more

Duke scores more in the first half than they do in the game. I’m thinking that the teams score plenty in the first have and will be well over 10 combined goals.

Will Yale be ahead at the half?

RP’s Pick = No

I don’t believe any team will be ahead at the half actually – we are going to have a 7 to 7 ball game at the half.

Albany vs Yale 2018 NCAA Semifinals Ryan Conwell (8 of 28)
Photo: Ryan Conwell / LaxAllStars.com

Who will win the first face-off of the second half?

RP’s Pick = Yale

Mackie is my guy – I’m saying that he wins the first of the game and the first of the 2nd half.

Will Duke be man up at any point in the second half?

RP’s Pick = Yes

As well coached as both these teams are and how much emphasis there is towards staying out of the box, I believe that both Yale and Duke will commit a few penalties in each half of the game.

Will there be more total goals scored the fourth quarter than in the first quarter?

RP’s Pick = No

When you look at lacrosse right now teams get a lot more patience late in the game.  One team has will have a few goal lead in the fourth and will attempt to take the air out of the ball. Combine this with the 1st quarter scoring these teams can create I find it hard to believe more goals would be scored in the 4th.

Will Yale have more ground balls in the game than Duke?

RP’s Pick = Yale

Mackie will own the face-off X creating more tallies in the GB category.

Yale is 5th in the country in GB’S

How many total combined Penalties will occur in the game

RP’s Pick = 6 or more

I believe that each team will be in the box a few times for sure. If you are making me guess I would say that Duke has 4 on the day and Yale has 3.

Duke vs Maryland 2018 NCAA Semifinals Ryan Conwell (32 of 32)
Photo: Ryan Conwell / LaxAllStars.com

Will the winning team win by 2 goals or more?

RP’s Pick = No

I believe the winning team will take it by 2 – Not more than 2 – exactly 2.

Will the winning team come from behind at any point or will they be ahead/tied the whole game?

RP’s Pick = Winning team is at least 1 goal down at some point in the game

Again to the crystal ball for my Yale-Duke Championship Predictions; Yale goes up early in the first quarter – Duke comes back to tie it at halftime. Duke takes the lead in the 3rd and Yale comes storming back for a two goal victory.

Who will win the game?

RP’s Pick = Yale Bulldogs

I think that now is the time for Yale – great season with one of the top coaches and players in the game. This would be the first ever NCAA title for Yale. The kids play with a ton of heart and on Monday I believe it will be their day. There you have it, fam. Now I dare you to make your own Yale-Duke championship predictions.

Now it’s your turn to make Yale-Duke Championship Predictions!

Things I Would Change About The Game

Editor’s note: It’s not everyday one of the greatest lacrosse players of all time chooses to share a few things he would change about his favorite game. In the spirit of high school season starting up across North America, we’re pleased to revisit this thought-provoking piece by Ryan Powell.

I recently heard from a LaxAllStars reader who posed a loaded question to me.

“If you could change anything about the game of lacrosse, on each level (youth through pro), what would the change or changes be?”
– Derek Fongemie, Maine

If I had the ability to change our sport, here is what I would do…

Youth Change

At the youth level, I feel like it there is too much game play and not enough instruction. I have said this for a while now, but I really think that youth players today should spend their time and resources getting instruction, playing the game with buddies, having fun and enjoying the sport. There are a lot of kids that will not reach their maximum potential because they are pushed a competitive direction too early. Just one man’s opinion.

High School Change

There’s too much focus on recruiting! OMG, play lacrosse and have fun already! Showcase after showcase, recruiting films in 8th grade, etc, etc. Players and parents, think about how many scholarships there are available out there, think about how many roster spots each college team has (MCLA, Div 3,2,1), and then think about how many high school & youth players are playing this game.

My high school lacrosse career included playing for my high school, playing in the Empire Games for a few years, and going to 1-3 instructional camps each summer. Oh yeah, forget to mention the most important part of my training for success: playing a ton of lacrosse with my brothers and friends in the back yard at the Powell house or the Coffman house. Does anyone do that anymore?

College Change

Expand the amount of teams in the tournament to 32! It’s only one more game for teams, so players certainly won’t mind, and it gives the opportunity for more colleges to be recognized in the national spotlight. I think that it would be great for the sport! Plus, I would love to see a few 1st round upsets – wouldn’t you? How cool is March Madness?

Pro Change

SUPPORT! I think that the MLL is a great league and extremely well run. I can say the same for the NLL. These are our professional leagues and as lacrosse players or fans, young and old, we need to support these leagues. How do you think you do that? Check out the social media for both leagues, go to their games (and get a few first time friends to go with you), and if you can’t watch them live, watch a game on TV. Spread the love – let’s go lacrosse, as LaxAllStars.com likes to say “Grow The Game!”

How To Hit The Wall & Improve Your Game

Editor’s note: You hit the wall, right? If not, it’s probably time to consider whether or not you really want to improve your game! In the spirit of high school lacrosse season starting up across North America, we’re pleased to revisit this piece by Ryan Powell.

Last month, my company, Rhino Lacrosse, and my good friends George and Kevin Leveille of the Lake Placid Classic, worked hand in hand to put on the first ever Saratoga Springs Lacrosse Shootout. Looking back on it, I am very pleased with how the event turned out. We have an amazing venue in Saratoga, and the players and family members in attendance brought with them an incomparable passion for the game. We’re already looking forward to next year.

Jeff Brunelle of Lacrosse All Stars joined us in Saratoga to check out the tournament. He caught me on film talking about Wall Ball to a large group of high school players prior to our Powell Hour event.

I’ve always believed that hitting the wall can play an integral part in skills development for any lacrosse player. No matter your skill level, size, or age, you can use a wall to improve your stick skills and your athleticism. It all starts with focus and determination if you truly want to improve your game…

I encourage you to take what I said in the video into serious consideration if you aim to continually improve your game.

Wall ball presents a special opportunity because it puts you in full control. You’re in control of each session, and that means if you slack off and don’t notice any improvement, it can only be blamed on one person, and that’s you.

Hit the wall and improve your game!

Am I doing everything I can do to become the best player that I can be?

When you start to set goals for yourself in the sport of lacrosse, it’s important to ask yourself that question. It certainly isn’t easy to become the best – it requires a lot of hard work!

In the video below, I explain why I think your future as a lacrosse player is totally up to you… Here’s a hint: it all starts with lacrosse education, not recruiting tournaments.

NCAA D1

Denver vs. Albany

The battle of slick sticks and box moves has arrived. Each team has plenty of fans and believers, but who has the horses? Really like how Albany is playing the game right now! Danes 14-12.

Maryland vs. Cornell

UMD vs Cornell is the battle of #1 Poll teams. For much of the season the Terps and Big Red were the easy #1s, now they play each other early in a lower seeded game. Who wins this parity fest game? Cornell 12-11 (OT).

NCAA D2

Le Moyne vs. LIU Post

Upstate Vs Long Island? One State……… UpState! Dolphins 13-11.

Limestone vs. Seton Hill

Limestone is the sole true Southern team left. Seton Hill is looking to go to uncharted territory. Who wins, the newbie, or the veteran squad? Limestone wins 15-8.

NCAA D3

Tufts vs. Stevens Inst.

A rematch of the March decision that went in favor of Tufts 18-14. These two high powered offenses will square off in the second round of the NCAA D3 Tournament. Tufts wins 12-9.

WAC vs. Stevenson

Washington College has shown it can hang with the top teams this year, beating Salisbury 7-6 and Washington & Lee 8-4. Will the Shoremen be able to upset another big name though? Not so fast… Stevenson wins 13-9.

NJCAA

OCC vs. Essex

These two played a tight game, can Essex take it to the next level and actually knock off OCC? Again, One State……… UpState! OCC 16-13.

Genesee vs. Nassau

This could be the JuCo game of the year! Up and comer in Genesee against an established dynasty. Who’s trending higher? I do think that Nassau is the better team, however, each week I need to have an upset pick and this is mine this week. Genesee wins 10-9.

High School

Regis Jesuit vs. Mullen (CO)

Regis took the earlier game 9-8 in OT, will they pull it out again or will Mullen come back with a vengeance? I can’t guess Regis when I spent a season at the helm for Mullen. Mullen wins 10-8 this time around.

Olympus vs. Brighton (UT)

12-3 Brighton takes on 12-6 Olympus. Brighton took a comfortable 9-5 win earlier this month but Olympus is on a three game winning streak, averaging 12.6 goals for and only 6.3 against. Brighton will prove to be a bit too much again, 12-10 final.

Alright, you ready for this? Hit me with your best shot.

NCAA Division 1

#7 Maryland vs. Colgate

I expect Colgate to keep this one close- Senior day for a strong class including last years player of the year, Peter Baum. Colgate not having a great 2013 season but will play inspired and play with confidence; they have taken the terps down before so they know what it takes. I believe that Maryland has too much fire power and will win this one. Terps 12-10.

NCAA Division 2

#5 LIU Post vs. Chestnut Hill

Chestnut Hill is no slouch, especially with Coach Doc leading the charge. Will the Griffins have what it takes to upset the #5 team in the country though? As I have said before, in order to win the Rhino Pick ‘Em contest you need to have a few upsets. This is my major upset pick of the week; CHC wins 10-9.

NCAA Division 3

Washington & Lee vs. Lynchburg

It’s ODAC time! Who’s going to get the AQ here? Will Lynchburg keep rolling? The answer to these two questions is simple – W&L and no. I Like Washington & Lee 14-11.

Wesleyan vs. Middlebury

One goal game earlier this year for Middlebury. Do we see the same result in the NESCAC semis? Middlebury wins 12-10.

Whittier vs. Colorado College

The two most Western teams face off in D3 to see who is better. All about pride here! Colorado College wins in O.T. 11-10.

MCLA

#7 Sonoma State vs. #18 Cal Poly

Sonoma State hasn’t played a game since April 14th and after beating Cal Poly 11-5, lost to UCSB 14-7. Will this hurt Sonoma State on their playoff run? Cal Poly should be coming back hungry and ready to put in the work needed to win, especially after beating Stanford 11-10 and staying fresh with a win over Chico State this past weekend. I’m predicting that the long break helps SS and they put a complete smack down on Cal Poly. 15-8 final!

#5 Concordia vs. UC-San Diego

UCSD may be unranked, but they are ready to make a run at the WCLL D2 Championship, while #5 Concordia is looking to glance off any blows headed their way and keep their eyes affixed on Greenville. #5 wins by 5. Concordia 15-10.

#17 Simon Fraser vs. #19 Oregon State

Oregon State is definitely on the rise this year and has been proving that week in and week out. Will the Beavers have what it takes to bring a new name to the PNCLL Championship for the first time in what seems like forever? Beavers get er’ done – 12-11.

High School

Highland Park vs. St. Mark’s (TX)

This should be a good match up of two heavyweight schools in TX. Highland Park has a lot of heart and a lot of tradition – they win 9-7.

Chaminade (NY) vs. Greenwich (CT)

Long Island lacrosse in the house! Chaminade has a few studs that will prove to be too much for Greenwich. Winner, 13-8.

Hey LAS nation, you ready for round 4? Lots of good games to choose from this week, and I think I’ve got you beat!

If you’re new to Rhino Pick ‘Emmake sure you watch this video. Each week I’ll select 10 games to highlight. I’ll predict the winners and tell you why I think they’ll win the game. Then, you get a chance to go straight up against me in a one-on-one pick ’em battle. Get more right than I do, and my company, Rhino Lacrosse, will hit you up with a free sticker pack in the mail.
*Week 3 results can be found here.

Alright, you ready for this? Hit me with your best shot.

NCAA Division 1

#6 Cornell vs. #12 Princeton

Two Ivy League top dogs battle it out. The Big Red vs. the Tigers, Pannell vs Schreiber, which top-scorer will lead his team to victory! I’m going Pannell and the Big Red take this one. They are a formidable team this year. Cornell 10-9 in OT.

#7 Loyola vs. #11 Hopkins

You ready for this? We all know rivalry games make every playing field even. The Blue Jays at Homewood Field are running fast right now and Pierce Bassett and the Hopkins defense held the Terrapins to just four goals in their big win over Maryland two weeks ago. Hopkins upsets Loyola 11-8

NCAA Division 2

#1 Mercyhurst vs. #6 Seton Hill

Everyone loves a good in-state rivalry, both Mercyhurst and Seton Hill have DOMINATED their respective seasons. The Lakers are 13-0 and the Griffins haven’t lost since February. Mercyhurst will take this one though, in dominating fashion with a 15-9 win.

#4 Le Moyne vs. #9 St. Michael’s

St. Michael’s is still rebounding from their loss to Merrimack earlier this week and won’t be ready for Le Moyne. Dolphins take this one 11-9.

NCAA Division 3

#11 Stevens vs. Ithaca

I’m feeling it this week, maybe it’s that New York connection or maybe it’s because Ithaca has outscored their opponents 63-14 in the past four games. Stevens is primed for the upset and Ithaca wins 12-11.

#12 Washington & Lee vs. Hampden-Sydney

H-S won a hard fought victory over Lynchburg last week, but I think the Generals are ready to take charge here. Washington & Lee wins this one 14-11.

MCLA

#9 Cal vs. #12 Stanford

Huge game! WCLL playoffs seeding on the line, national rankings on the line, and just a huge rivalry between the two schools. Look for Stanford to rebound to their winning ways with a hard fought victory here. Stanford 9-8.

Boise State vs. Idaho

With the Governor’s Trophy on the line, this is always a great game. But you can’t go against Boise State at home, on the blue. Boise State 15-11.

High School

Mullen (CO) vs. Columbine (CO)

Huge game between two top Colorado teams, the 9-3 Mustangs look to rebound from a loss to Cherry Creek, while the 7-4 Columbine Rebels look to keep up their winning ways. Little did you know, I coached at Mullen for a season! Sticking with the Mustangs for the 12-10 win.

Rocky Mountain (ID) vs. Timberline (ID)

Big Idaho match-up! Rocky Mountain is currently the only undefeated team (6-0) in conference but has yet to see one of the top dogs in the Valley. Timberline is young and vulnerable but are backed into a corner right now. I’m going with another upset here, Timberline over Rocky Mountain in a dog fight, 7-6.

Alright, you ready for this? Hit me with your best shot.

NCAA Division 1

#4 Maryland vs. #12 Yale

C’mon man…..Really, no really? Maryland, coming off a loss to Hop last weekend will be extremely hungry to get back on track this week! Maryland wins 12-6; watch for Terps attackman Kevin Cooper to lead the charge.

Virginia vs. Bellarmine

Wow – six losses in a row for UVA. Not so sure that has ever happened before?! The program has too much pride and will play tough against Bellarmine in their final home game of the season. UVA will not lose seven in a row, they will get the W; 14-8 final.

NCAA Division 2

 #3 Merrimack vs. #4 Adelphi

#3 vs #4, an in-conference Northeast 10 game, and one with huge playoff implications. This is as big as the regular season gets… and this is the toughest prediction of the weekend. When it’s all said and done – Adelphi puts another dash in the win column 11-9.

NDNU vs. Whittier

D2 vs D3! Cali bragging rights on the line. This should be a good game – the Poets will continue to roll in the right direction after the 20 goal win over Claremont. Whittier – 13-10.

NCAA Division 3

Gettysburg vs. #12 Washington College

Gettysburg is unranked, but higher in the LaxPower Power Rankings; WAC is ranked 12th. Who wins this awesome Centennial Rivalry game? Washington College has had over half of their goals assisted this season which is a true sign of team offense. WAC wins 12-9.

York vs. St. Mary’s

Who will be the second best team in the CAC behind Salisbury? This game could give us an answer! I really want to say St. Mary’s here as I think that they are the better team. However, in order to beat the knowledgable members of LAS you have to go with a few upsets each week. This is my upset pick – I like the team balance attack of York- winner winner, 11-10.

MCLA

#1 Colorado State vs. #2 Colorado

Huge in-state rivalry, CSU was last year’s MCLA champion, Colorado is white hot right now. Like I told you a few weeks back, if you thought I was going to pick against the Cuse’ you didn’t know me. I’m a loyal guy, and CSU coach Alex Smith is a good buddy of mine – so I like CSU to win for that reason + I think that they are the better team. CSU 10-9.

#11 Oregon vs. #15 Oregon State

Civil War! Game at West Linn High School in Portland, OR. JB and CW had to throw this game in the line-up for me to predict or course… you guys are going to get me in trouble. No matter who I pick, 50% of the people in Oregon won’t be happy with me or my choice. I’m going to go with the Ducks; Winner 13-10.

High School

Lakeridge (OR) vs. Bainbridge Island (WA)

Lakeridge is playing some really good lacrosse right now; they have the confidence of old back! Bainbridge is a well coached, hard working group, that is always one of the top teams in the Pacific NW. At the end of the day, I think that the defense for Lakeridge will prove to be too much for Bainbrige – Lakeridge wins 11-7.

Fayetteville-Manlius (NY) vs. Baldswinville (NY)

Early going for both of these squads as the weather in CNY has been terrible this spring and teams have had limited times on the full field. Both B-Ville and F-M are strong programs but I expect FM to take the early season W this weekend. Hornets win 11-8.

Alright, you ready for this? Hit me with your best shot.

NCAA Division 1

#15 Johns Hopkins @ #1 Maryland

I expect Johns Hopkins to show up and play a great game- they will play inspired and play to win. “Must Win” time for Hop! However, I do think that Maryland will prove to be too good at home for the Jays at the end of the day. Maryland 10- 8.

#4 Denver @ #6 Loyola

Both squads sitting at 9-2. Should be an awesome game to watch! I’m thinking this one is going to OT. Denver wins in OT, 12-11.

NCAA Division 2

#1 Mercyhurst @ #5 LIU Post

Two top level D2 programs, and two top 5 teams. Post gets home field advantage. Will it matter? I don’t think so- Mercyhurst has a strong squad this year and will certainly be tested this weekend. I’m thinking that Mercyhurst will stay undefeated! Mercyhurst wins 14-10.

#3 Limestone @ #10 Pfeiffer

Two of the best down South! Is Pfeiffer ready to challenge Limestone’s Souther supremacy? Not so fast Pfeiffer- Limestone wins 13-0.

NCAA Division 3

Hampden-Sydney @ #16 Roanoke

Roanoke just knocked off Stevenson in a huge upset. Can they keep it going? I’m thinking yes they do keep it going and they will be ranked higher by the end of the weekend. Roanoke wins 15-8.

#19 Wesleyan @ Bowdoin

Both teams seem like potential Pool C NCAA teams, should they not win the NESCAC. This game has big league, NCAA at-large, and playoff ramifications. This is my upset pick- I like Bowdoin, 12-11.

MCLA

#6 Sonoma State vs. #7 UCSB

This is a great SLC vs. WCLL match-up with two top 10 opponents. These teams are 2-2 against each other, with their last match-up coming in 2010. UCSB needs to show that they belong in the same group as the top 5, while SSU is looking to sweep the WCLL after upsetting Stanford last week. I think that Sonoma State will continue to roll, winning 16-12.

#24 Pittsburgh vs. #14 Davenport

After coming “oh so close” to victory against the Spartans, Pitt will be out to prove they can still hang with the big dogs. These teams have only played once (2010 when DU was MCLA D2) and Davenport won. Davenport is on the rise in their first year as an MCLA D1 team, sitting currently at #14 and will have to make sure they bring their ‘A’ game, as Pitt is a very dangerous team right now. Pitt wins 10-9.

High School

Deerfield vs. Choate (Prep)

Deerfield is the favorite, but not by much. Both teams are 2-1 and both are looking to climb the NE West ladder for prep lacrosse this year. Deerfield wins 14-11.

West Islip (NY) vs. Ridgewood (NJ)

West Islip has dropped games to Chaminade and Smithtown. Can they rep NY state and win against a 2-1 tough Ridgewood NJ team? I think that Ridgewood will prove to be too much this weekend and will win the game 11-9.

Presenting this week’s matchups… Let’s get ready to rumble.

2013 Rhino Pick 'Em Contest

NCAA Division 1

Penn State vs. Drexel

The goalie play from Austin Kaut will make the difference. Penn State wins 10-8

Cuse vs. Princeton

If you think that I will ever pick against the Orange you don’t know me at all. I bleed Orange! Cuse wins 14-9

NCAA Division 2

Mercyhurst vs. Dowling

Mercyhurst will prove to be too much for Dowling down the stretch. This game will go to OT. Mercyhurst wins 12-11

Seton Hill vs. Pfeiffer

8-1 SHU takes on 11-1 Pfeiffer. HUGE game! I like Pfeiffer playing at home; 13-11 final

NCAA Division 3

Cabrini vs. Denison

Top 20 Match up. Ohio vs PA. Should be a tight game. Both programs seem to be on the rise. I like Powell’s game for Denison! He scores the game winner…… 9-7 final

Washington College vs. Muhlenberg

WAC is looking tough, but Muhlenberg brings a blue collar attitude to the field. Brains vs. Brawn? To stay consistent with my lacrosse career- gotta love the blue collar boyz at home. Muhlenberg 12-11

MCLA

Chapman (MCLA) vs. Whittier (NCAA D3)

INTER DIVISION GAME! I like Chapman at home. Long list of Oregon ties to Chapman and I don’t have it in me to go against my boy Con Bro Chill. Chapman 11-8

Michigan State vs. Pittsburgh

Looking at this game, right away I want to say Mich State. But now it’s not right away anymore. When I think of Mich State I think inconsistent. Pitt at home, winner winner 10-8

High School

Garden City (NY) vs. Duxbury (MA)

A legendary program on LI takes on the #1 team from Mass. Should be one of the best HS games to see all year. Garden City wins 12-9

St. Paul’s (MD) vs. Episcopal (VA)

Great interstate game. I have two words for you. St. Paul’s………. 15-8 final

Last meal, what is it?

Thanksgiving Feast with the family.

Who do you look up to most today and why (your idol or mentor)?

My parents, for always being there for me and by teaching me through their actions.

What is your biggest fear?

Letting those I care about down.

If you had to redo college and had to go to another school and you were going to play lacrosse at the new school, where would you go?

Ohio State – I love Coach Breschi and would love to have played for him.

Borrowed from ACCPhotos.com
Former OSU Head Coach Joe Breschi

What is the one thing that you need on a daily basis?

A positive attitude, I hate negativity.

What’s in your DVD collection?

Classic 90’s comedies mainly – the Chris Farley and Adam Sandler collection, Kingpin, etc…. Then the classics – Gladiator, Braveheart, The Last of the Mohicans, and I’m a big Planet Earth fan.

Are you a cat person or a dog person?

I am a huge dog person. I have a cat named Monster right now, but am slowly persuading my fiancee for our first dog.

What are some of your household chores?

Too many to list – all yard work, taking out the garbage, cleaning previously mentioned Monster litter, and chip in with the cooking here and there.

What is your favorite TV show?

Modern Family, The Killing, Law & Order: SVU, Pardon the Interruption, Amazing Race.

What is your favorite song?

Solsbury Hill – Peter Gabriel, Beast of Burden – Rolling Stones, and I’m liking Hootie now that he’s gone country – Darius Rucker.

What would you say if someone on the street asked you for 20 bucks?

I’d stop and ask them what they were spending it on. I’d be interested and give them the time of day since they went big and didn’t just ask for $1 or change.

What was the best lacrosse stick that you ever owned?

I know nothing about sticks, but my favorite had to be the Warrior Evolution on a Titan Classic strung up by Anthony Kelly.

If you could be a video game character, who would you be and why?

Borrowed from Gamernode.com

Burberry Brit.

If you could be any color of a crayon, what would you be?

Black.

What is your favorite quote?

The poem, “The Man in the Glass”. It’s a good one, look it up.

Football, my dad played in the NFL and I had a few D1 looks.

What do you want to be remembered for?

Making a positive impact on as many lives as I can.

What is your favorite pizza topping?

BBQ chicken.

Did you have a nick name as a kid?

DJ and it stuck.

If you were to play an instrument what would it be?

I always wished I could play the piano, but I have zero musical talent.

If you could visit anywhere in the world that you have not visited before, where would it be?

Machu Picchu – that is at the top of my list of places and things to do.

Borrowed from Machu-Picchu.us
Beautiful scenery.

If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be?

A lion with a huge mane.

If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and what would say?

Dr. Seuss would be great to chat with and hear his take on anything and everything.

What is the longest you’ve gone without a shower?

Oh geez, I’ve been on a 5-day camping trip, so maybe 5-6 days. I also remember during the summers of college I’d use our pool as my shower a lot too, ha.

If you knew you were going to be stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you take with you?

I’m guessing I can’t take a boat, so the three would be: a good book, a hammock, and a fishing pole.

Tell us one random thing about yourself?

I can wiggle my ears.

Favorite restaurant of all time? Name and what city?

The Bull Ring in NW Portland. Every Valentine’s I’d go with my girlfriend at the time in our sweats and you’d get massive portions for $5. It closed a few years back and I haven’t been able to find a new go-to Mexican place – RP I hope you can help me out with this.

Who is your celebrity crush?

Jessica Biel is at the top of my “list”.

Do you have a pre-game ritual? If so, what is it?

Not really, I had dynamic stretches I’d go through by myself. I like to be very calm before the game and then be able to just turn it on.

On your day off, you wake up and…?

Hit snooze a few more times, make some scrambled eggs, and go for a hike.

Are you a good tipper?

I’d like to think so, but only when it’s warranted. I think servers’ jobs are very tough and when they earn it, I like to give them a little something extra.

What do you put on your hot dog?

Ketchup, grilled onions, maybe some form of cheese.

Why do you wear the # that you wear?

I bounced around with my number a little. I ended up with 31 and 36 in honor of my cousin who passed away our senior year of college. He was 31 in college and 36 in high school, so it was a way for him to be there with me and give me that extra motivation.

Do you have a questions that we could ask the next pro lacrosse players?

If you were a trucker with a CB radio, what would your call sign be? Feel free to insert fighter pilot for any Top Gun fans as well.

This question was asked by our last Lettin’ It Rip guest Matt Bocklet. If you had to be the leader of a foreign nation, which would you choose and why?

China, so I would have the US in my pocket, financially speaking.

When I was drafted to the Cannons, Tom Zummo donned the #9 for Boston. I would have felt uncomfortable asking a vet for a # as a rookie, so I just stepped up and took two #9’s. Haven’t gone back since! (Editor’s note: Classy move!)

Do you have a question that I should ask the next pro lacrosse player I interview?

“What is the next biggest trend in lacrosse?”

Time to let it rip!

What was the first vehicle that you had? What kind of vehicle do you currently drive?

My first car was a bright red Nissan Pathfinder, which had a lot of flash with a chrome brush guard, chrome tail light guards and powerful fog lights.  My friends called it the fire truck.  Now I drive around a Ford Escape which is not as flashy, but at least I have a sun roof.

Your last meal; what is it?

My last meal will be comprised of soda, french fries, sausage, potato chips and tater tots.  I have not tasted these unhealthy treats in more than a few years… Each year I give up a type of food that I enjoy, but is not healthy for you.  I like to call it my own lifetime “Man Challenge”. Hopefully before my last meal I will have added many other treats to the list.

https://youtu.be/9YfvBbxE1vU

Who do you look up to most today and why (your idol or mentor)?

I would have to say that my father has been a pretty big mentor of mine, without him even knowing it.  He coached every youth sport team I played on, and always remains calm, cool and collected.  I would like to think that I now use the same coaching style for my HS lacrosse team.  I used to idolize Tim Tebow as well, until he became a Jet.

What is your biggest fear?

Having to go back to my old lifestyle of wearing a suit and sitting in a cube for the rest of my life.

Living outside the cubicle

If you had to redo college, and had to go to another school, and you were going to play lacrosse at the new school, where would you go?

I would go to the University of Virginia.  I visited my younger brother, Chris, down there very often and always had a great time.  I will always love the time I spent at Hopkins, but it would have been nice to get a big school experience.

What is the one thing that you need on a daily basis?

To break a sweat.  If I don’t work out at least once every day I feel like a bum.

What’s in your DVD collection?

Love Actually, When Harry Met Sally, Pretty Woman and any other romantic comedy aka RoCo’s.  Not to mention The Mighty Ducks series…those are just classics!

Are you a cat person or a dog person?

Dogs for life.

What are some of your household chores?

Well my current roommates are lazy bums who think they are still in college… so pretty much everything: vacuuming, cleaning, putting away the dishes, taking out the trash and tending to our garden.

What is your favorite TV show?

Right now either Game of Thrones or True Blood.

What is your favorite song?

This is a toss up between “Linger” by the Cranberries and “In a Big Country” by MOE. I just checked by iTunes and each song has over 100 plays.

What would you say if someone on the street asked you for 20 bucks?

“Lo siento, no speaka inglish”

What was the best lacrosse stick that you ever owned?

My senior year of college I had an X2 that Jake Byrne strung up for me. I swear that stick could do no wrong. I felt invincible playing with it.

That Senior stick was magic!

If you could be a video game character, who would you be and why?

I would be Donatello. He is an intelligent ninja turtle that knows how to use a bow. He would be a ridiculous defenseman in lacrosse.

What kind of cologne do you wear?

None, I’m all me.

If you could be any color of a crayon, what would you be?

Purple. It has always been my favorite color and just so happens to be the same color as Donatello and my high school.

What is your favorite quote?

“Every battle is won before it is ever fought.” – Sun Tzu

Borrowed from X10MountainLacrosseAcademy.com
Bocklet playing for the Jays.

If you did not choose lacrosse as your sport, what sport would you have chosen.

Ping Pong. When my lacrosse playing career is over, I am going to try to go pro.

What do you want to be remembered for?

I’m still working on the answer to this question.

What is your favorite pizza topping?

Artichoke. If you have ever been to an Artichoke Pizza in NYC you will know what I’m talking about.  I used to live 3 blocks from one and would wait, in line, for a half hour just to get a slice.

Did you have a nick name as a kid?

My first two years of college, when I was at Fairfield University, my friends called me Chester.  I still don’t know why.

If you were to play an instrument what would it be?

I would want to be a real good drummer.  My uncle is a phenomenal drummer and I have always wished I could play like him.

If you could visit anywhere in the world that you have not visited before, where would it be?

I have always wanted to visit Chile.  It is an interesting country that has almost every type of terrain and climate.  Plus I have always wanted to go on a South American snowboarding trip during our Summer time.

If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be?

I am a big fan of birds of prey.  I think it would be pretty cool to have a Falcon that I could use to go hunting with.

If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and what would say?

I think it would be a lot of fun to meet Chris Farley.  I’ve heard that he always made everyone around him laugh.

What is the longest you’ve gone without a shower?

This winter I lived up in the mountain town of Breckenridge…I showered about 2 or 3 times a week.

If you knew you were going to be stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you take with you?

Sunscreen, shades and a towel.  Might as well get my tan on, if I’m going to be stuck there.  I burn very easily.

Tell us one random thing about yourself?

My friends shot me in the face with a BB gun, when I was 13.  I am still missing a tooth from it.

Borrowed from MisfitToys.net
"You'll shoot your eye out!"

Favorite restaurant of all time? Name and what city?

Cafe Mogador, in the East Village, of NYC.  I used to live on the same block and ate there at least once a week.  I am actually headed back to NYC, in a couple days, and will be going there for the first time in over a year.

Borrowed from BrunchinNewYork.com
Cafe Mogador in the East Village of NYC

Who is your celebrity crush?

Tina Fey. She makes me laugh.

Do you have a pre-game ritual? If so, what is it?

I give my stick a fresh tape job for every game.

On your day off, you wake up and…?

Do some yoga.

Are you a good tipper?

I would like to think so.

What do you put on your hot dog?

Ketchup and mustard, just like every real American.

Why do you wear the # that you wear?

To annoy my old teammate from Fairfield, Matt Scanlon.

Do you have a question that we could ask the next pro lacrosse players?

If you had to be the leader of a foreign nation, which would you choose and why?

One last question for you to answer from our last Lettin’ it Rip player “Mike Powell”

What books are you reading, and what art do you have on your walls?

American Sniper by Chris Kyle.  I currently have empty purple walls in my room.  My plan is to put a skyline shot of every city that I have lived in (Baltimore, Dallas, NY and Denver) on the walls, but I have not gotten to it yet.

Bocklet working on his own sniping skills.

Lettin’ It Rip with Michael Watson

Editor’s note: Each week Ryan Powell interviews one current or former professional lacrosse player, asking them some quick hitter questions to better understand them as a person and lacrosse player. It is often these players that have driven, and continue to drive, the game of lacrosse to the next level.

We hope you enjoy learning some fun facts that you might not have known about some of the greatest players to pick up a stick. This week Rhino interviews Michael Watson, former UVA stud, Attackman of the Year, and US World Team Champion.

Time to let it rip!

What was the first vehicle that you had? What kind of vehicle do you currently drive?

Ford Explorer Sport.  Toyota Land Cruiser.

Last meal, what is it?

Maryland Blue Crab soft shell sandwich

Who do you look up to most today and why (your idol or mentor)?

Dom Starsia.  His display of integrity and class has transcended generations of players and the prominent program he has built.  He has never lost sight of what is important in his work and that is the development of young men and the regard for the game that is much bigger than any person.

What is your biggest fear?

A dirty bomb in this country.

If you had to redo college and had to go to another school and you were going to play lacrosse at the new school, where would you go?

Syracuse.  I have always had great respect for the program and how they play the game.  I look back on the rivalry with UVA as 2 explosive teams who refused to back down and play anything other than their own game.  I sight those examples as the way the game should be payed.

What is the one thing that you need on a daily basis?

Yerba Mate.

Yerba Cup (ArizonaGourds.com)

What’s in your DVD collection?

Old School, Wedding Crashers, Best in Show, Snatch, Shawshank Redemption, Band of Brothers, Reservoir Dogs , Anchorman, The Man from Snowy River, Hoosiers, September Sessions, The Search.

Are you a cat person or a dog person?

I like all animals but do not own any.

What are some of your household chores?

Sweeping sand off the front porch and weeding the yard.

What is your favorite TV show?

Californication, Shameless, Boardwalk Empire, Deadliest Catch.

What is your favorite song?

Impossible to narrow down but I will go with Redemption Song.  Simple, beautiful, meaningful, and straight from a legend’s heart.

https://youtu.be/OFGgbT_VasI

What would you say if someone on the street asked you for 20 bucks?

What do you need it for?

What was the best lacrosse stick that you ever owned?

The one I use now.  The Nike Legacy.

If you could be a video game character, who would you be and why?

I am not a gamer but I it would be cool to be Superman.  He pretty much has it all.

What is your favorite quote?

“Success is not something that just happens – success is learned, success is practiced and then it is shared.” – Sparky Anderson

If you did not choose lacrosse as your sport, what sport would you have chosen?

Golf.  I was a 4 handicap at age 14.

Michael Watson

What do you want to be remembered for?

Being someone who was looked up to by his peers, and who impacted the life of numerous young people and influenced them to grow as people and athletes.  Someone who contributed greatly to the development of the game that gave me so much.

What kind of cologne do you wear?

I don’t!

If you could be any color of a crayon, what would you be?

Orange.

What is your favorite pizza topping?

Jalapenos.

If you could visit anywhere in the world that you have not visited before, where would it be?

Galapagos Islands.

Galapagos Islands (OliviaPalermo.com)

Did you have a nickname as a kid?

Wah.

If you were to play an instrument what would it be?

Drums.

If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be?

Kangaroo.

If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and what would say?

Tiger Woods – “Why in the world couldn’t you make it out of your own driveway without hitting a tree?”

Favorite restaurant of all time? Name and what city?

Raw Bar – Ocean Reef, Key Largo, Florida.

The Ocean Reef Club (Wowowow.com)

What is the longest you’ve gone without a shower?

3 weeks, I was camping in a remote area of Central America.

Tell us one random thing about yourself?

My dream as a kid was to go to ASU and play both Ice Hockey and Golf.

If you knew you were going to be stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you take with you?

A Leatherman utility tool, fishing line, Adriana Lima.

Who is your celebrity crush?

See the last question.

Adriana Lima

Do you have a pre-game ritual? If so, what is it?

I am superstitious about not being superstitious, but I might listen to some Tool.

Are you a good tipper?

Always 20% or more.

What do you put on your hot dog?

Great question:  spicy mustard and sauerkraut.

On your day off, you wake up and…?

Go to the beach and surf, or maybe play golf at Torrey Pines.

Torrey Pines Golf Course (SandieGoGolf.info)

Why do you wear the # that you wear?

I wanted a single digit number when I went to UVA and 4 was available.

Do you have a questions that we could ask the next pro lacrosse players?

Who is the player featured in the MLL logo?  hahaha.  Also if you had to move to another country which would it be and why?

What’s your favorite lacrosse memory and why?

There are so many, but scoring the game winning goal in overtime as a freshman to upset ‘Cuse in the Final Four in front of a packed Bird Stadium was a rush that I have not felt since.  For an 18 year old kid that is a big deal.

Michael Watson

Who were your favorite players to watch when you were young?

It was all about the Gait Brothers, also Tim Whiteley & Dennis Goldstein.
