We learned that home crowds make a difference. Meaningful energy and electricity were felt from fans in Boston, Salt Lake City, Baltimore and San Diego. This was really cool to see.
Elite short stick defensive midfield play and goaltending are critical for success. You can’t win with crappy SSDM’s and with goalies who surrender soft goals.
The rookie class of 2024 was special. We knew they’d be impactful – but they far exceeded even the bullish predictions. 43 rookies played in a PLL game. TJ Malone was the Rookie of the Year. The class of 2025 will be the opposite end of the spectrum – minimally impactful. You will learn that next summer. I already know it.
We learned that the PLL summer schedule is long (16 weeks) and baked in bye weeks don’t help offensive continuity, rhythm and flow.
Position versatility is key for offensive players. The ability to flip flop between attack and midfield or from LSM to close defense is a trait that helps rookies dress in the world of 19 man rosters.
Roster management and culture creation are the two primary jobs of head coaches. We re-learn this every summer.
PLL offensive strategy is more matchup based than scheme. College offenses run schemes. Pro offenses attack match-ups. That makes the single invert and two-man games a weekly staple in the PLL world. Those who can execute from these scenarios thrive. Defending two-man games at every axis on the dial is critical to defensive prowess. More college coaching staffs need to learn this – and make picking on match-ups a theme.
ESPN’s Dana Boyle pointed out the dynamic of coaching at the pro level. “We saw PLL Coaches from different generations adapting to and adopting to the “new wave” lacrosse,” she said. “The benefits of seeking pro player input and player-led collaboration was evident.”
We witnessed coaches Jim Stagnitta, Mike Pressler and Brian Holman adapting their coaching style to better mesh with rookies and vet players. Adaptability is a survival skill set. Those that refuse to adapt will perish.
We learned that Graeme Hossack is really good. That Brendan Krebs has a story of ascension suitable to all young players. That Jeff Teat is a sorcerer and Connor Fields a magician. That Tre LeClaire, Matt Campbell and Graham Bundy possess uncommon shot range. That Marcus Holman and Rob Pannell are ageless. We learned that Dox is back, Grant is gifted and Brennan O’Neil is human. And that Joe Nardella, Trevor Baptiste and TD Ierlan are warriors.
We learn every summer about competitive excellence – it’s the common trait amongst players. And seeing that in motion is what keeps me coming back.
