Is Fighting Good for Lacrosse? A Look at Elijah Gash and the Debate

One of the biggest events this lacrosse offseason went down this past weekend in an NLL game. The Buffalo Bandits and Toronto Rock have a historic rivalry with decades of tension between them, and that tension was on full display from start to finish. The underperforming Toronto Rock put up a fight on Buffalo’s home turf, and the game stayed close. Like any good rivalry, things got heated, and everything exploded when Zack Belter of the Buffalo Bandits decided to pick a fight with Toronto Rock newbie Elijah Gash.

Gash had a solid enough rookie year to get picked 12th overall by the Rock in the 2024 dispersal draft. At 6’4” and 210 pounds, Gash—son of Super Bowl-winning running back Sam Gash—is a complete unit. Belter figured that out quickly when one clean right hook from Gash dropped him to the ground, leaving him completely disoriented. Fights happen all the time in the NLL, but they’re rarely as entertaining as this one. Usually, it’s just a bunch of jersey-grabbing and awkward wrestling to the ground. This fight, though? It was different.

The clip of Gash knocking out Belter blew up online in a way lacrosse highlights almost never do. Sure, it spread fast in the lacrosse community because of how wild it was, but it didn’t stop there. It crossed over into mainstream sports media, with outlets like Barstool Sports sharing it and putting millions of new eyes on the sport. People who’d never even heard of box lacrosse—or maybe even lacrosse in general—were suddenly talking about it. And honestly, any time the sport gets that kind of exposure, it’s a good thing.

Of course, Elijah Gash didn’t escape the moment without criticism. Plenty of people pointed out that his second punch, thrown while Belter was already on the ground, was unnecessary, and his reaction after the fight came off as cocky. Still, it raises an important question: is fighting good for lacrosse?

In the NLL, fighting is part of the culture. It’s always been there, kind of like in hockey. Tell a casual sports fan that there’s a game where people beat each other with sticks and fight, and they’re probably sold immediately. That’s just part of the physicality of box lacrosse, and it’s been a staple of the sport for a long time.

The PLL, on the other hand, has a different approach. Fighting isn’t something they encourage, but when it does happen, they’ll absolutely use it for social media engagement. It’s a tricky balance for the PLL, though, because they market heavily to kids. They definitely don’t want to promote fighting to young players, but at the same time, a big moment like a fight is hard not to capitalize on.

That’s the problem. Pro-level violence tends to trickle down to youth sports, and kids copy what they see. Whether it’s a flashy goal celebration or a behind-the-back shot, it’s only a matter of time before fighting becomes part of that mix. And no one wants that.

So, is fighting good for lacrosse? It’s great for getting attention, especially in a social media-driven world where quick clips can go viral and pull millions of eyes onto the game. And right now, lacrosse needs all the eyeballs it can get. But let’s be real—there’s so much more to lacrosse than just the physicality. The way the ball moves, the chemistry between players, and the flow of the game are what make it beautiful.

There’s a thin line here. Fighting brings instant engagement, but if it becomes too big of a focus, it’ll take away from what makes the sport special. And if it starts showing up in youth lacrosse, that’s a major problem. Let’s keep the game physical and competitive, sure, but let’s also focus on what really makes lacrosse great. Still, there’s no denying that a good fight will always grab attention—especially when someone like Elijah Gash lands a clean knockout.

Three Kings: Lacrosse Legends Who Changed the Game

All three lacrosse Hall of Fame inductees have compiled staggering résumés. All three changed the game, propelling it forward. All three were driven by success to continue chasing excellence on the path to mastering the Creator’s game.

“In the last 20 to 25 years, you would be hard-pressed to find another trio of more impactful players on the game at the amateur, professional, and international levels,” says TV announcer Joe Beninati. “These men were the gold standard at their respective positions, and it was an honor to describe their work on the field.”

Three incredibly dominant players who changed the game—it has been an honor and a privilege to call so many of their televised games. Their legacies live on in the way the game is now played.

Paul Rabil

Paul Rabil transferred to DeMatha High School as a sophomore.

“I remember watching DeMatha play at Boys’ Latin, and afterward, I immediately got on the phone and called Hopkins assistant coach Bill Dwan to emphasize how impressed I was. Rabil checked all the boxes.”

At Johns Hopkins, Rabil won two championships (2005 and 2007). In 2007, he earned the McLaughlin Award as the nation’s best midfielder. He played in 62 games as a Blue Jay, finishing with 112 goals and 67 assists.

“Name your favorite quality for a midfielder to possess, and this guy had it,” said Beninati. “He was blessed with amazing athleticism—a combination of speed, power, and toughness that sometimes made him unstoppable. When I close my eyes, I can still see him beating his defender on an alley-dodge or a sweep and ripping a jump shot into the cage. He was impressive, to say the least.”

Rabil’s professional lacrosse career spanned from 2008 to 2022, with 11 years in the MLL and three in the PLL, totaling over 150 games. He also played 77 games in the NLL, scoring 179 points and scooping up 440 loose balls.

Rabil represented Team USA in the World Championships, winning gold twice. Along with his brother Mike and the support of investors, he founded the PLL in 2019 after breaking away from the MLL.

“I think Rabil’s greatest contribution to the game has been his pro-level work ethic and raising the standard. Lacrosse was never viewed as a destination, and he changed that. His dreams for himself and the sport continue to push boundaries.”

“His biggest impact was how transformative he was for the JHU program,” said Brian Carcaterra, former JHU and MLL goalie. “Yes, it was Kyle’s (Harrison) team, but Paul rekindled the aura of Johns Hopkins lacrosse defined by excellence on championship weekend.”

John Grant Jr.

John Grant Jr. studied for two years at SUNY Morrisville before transferring to Delaware in 1998. In 1999, he was awarded College Player of the Year after averaging six points per game.

Grant enjoyed a 17-year NLL career, playing in over 250 games and scoring more than 1,500 points.

“He was intimidating and imposing. He broke the mold,” said Carcaterra. “There had never been an attackman with that size coupled with that skill. His brute toughness and durability, hardened in the indoor game, made him the absolute perfect storm. The dude was bigger, stronger, tougher, and more skilled than everyone—that’s crazy. To my recollection, he never once opened his mouth.”

Outdoors, “Junior” played 136 games in the MLL over 13 seasons, finishing with 541 points. He once scored 10 goals in a single game and lifted the Steinfeld Cup five times.

“A legendary playmaker and goal-scorer whose lacrosse stick could double as a magic wand,” said Beninati. “His disguise and deception at the attack end of the field made defenders lose sleep. One day, he would bulldoze his way to a record-breaking performance; the next, his stickhandling brilliance would twist you in knots.”

North of the border, Grant Jr. played 95 games in Junior A box lacrosse and 166 games in Senior A. He was a four-time member of Team Canada for the field World Championships.

Grant’s creative play and unpredictability inspired the next wave of goal scorers to think outside the box. He continues to coach the next generation, passing along his expertise and unique style.

Brodie Merrill

Brodie Merrill graduated from Georgetown in 2005. During his final two years, he was a First-Team All-American and won the Schmeisser Award as the nation’s top defensive player. He was a two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist.

“There have been better takeaway players or on-ball defenders, but there has never been a defensive player more disruptive to an offensive scheme than Brodie,” said Carcaterra. “There’s not a better off-ball player or off-the-ground player ever. Brodie in the middle of the field was truly Ray Lewis.”

Merrill played 298 NLL games, scooping up nearly 3,000 loose balls. He competed in 165 MLL games and 33 PLL contests. He never seemed to tire.

He led Team Canada during the World Championships four times. Merrill has won every major defensive award at every level, and the current PLL LSM of the Year Award bears his name.

“I wish I had watched more of his indoor games, where people tell me he was exceptional,” said Beninati. “I can vouch for how good he was outdoors. Nobody I covered in the last 25 years knew how to track down a ground ball and scoop it better. He had this sixth sense to gauge where a loose ball was headed, and once it was his, he could be a devastating player transitioning from defense to offense.”

Merrill and his family helped establish the Hill Academy, which has developed hundreds of college and pro lacrosse players since 2006.

“Off the field, Brodie created a breeding ground (Hill) of hybrid players (Canada/USA) which ushered in an entirely new generation of players, more skilled than anything we had seen prior in the field game,” explained Carcaterra.

He was the ultimate defensive hunter.

Unexpected NLL Storylines Heading into 2025

It has been a crazy start to the 2024-2025 NLL season. We typically have a good idea going into every year of which teams are going to be dominant and which teams are going to fall below the pack. As we enter 2025, the script has been flipped on its head in just a few weeks. I’ve been able to watch a good amount of games so far this year, and 2025 is ramping up to be one of the most exhilarating box lacrosse seasons in quite some time, just due to the parity across the league along with new powerhouses taking the place of ones that have fallen. Let’s take a look at some of the main takeaways from the NLL season so far as we head into the new year.

Buffalo Bandits Dominance

The Buffalo Bandits are doing Bandit things, starting the year 3-0 with a plus-26 goal differential. Despite winning back-to-back championships last year, the start of the regular season was a little rough for this crew, as they finished the regular season 11-7. The Bandits have come out and just steamrolled everyone in front of them, including a 15-7 win over the Rochester Nighthawks, an 18-7 win over the Ottawa Black Bears, and a 13-6 win over the Rochester Nighthawks again. Granted, these aren’t the toughest opponents in the world, but the Bandits are looking like a team that can certainly repeat titles in 2025.

Toronto Rock Downward Slope

What a rocky start to the year it has been for the Toronto Rock. They were certainly a team that had high hopes, as they do every year, as one of the perennial forces in box lacrosse. They finished last year with a 15-3 record and have already surpassed their loss total from last year, standing at 0-4. Looking at this past week’s injury report, it’s clear to see why. With guys like Tom Schreiber, Challen Rogers, Latrell Harris, TD Ierlan, and Mark Matthews all making an appearance on the injury report, it directly translates to an 0-4 record. The team has looked pretty dysfunctional in the games they have played, and it will be interesting to see if they can find a path to success this season.

The Swarm, Wings, and Rush?!

Outside of the Buffalo Bandits, the Georgia Swarm, Philadelphia Wings, and Saskatchewan Rush all fall within the top four. These teams have looked very dominant to start the year, especially considering where they were last year. The Georgia Swarm finished the best out of the group last year with a 10-8 record. The Rush were next with a flipped 8-10 record, with the Wings falling far behind the pack at 6-12. These teams currently combine for a 10-2 record, which is a stark contrast to how they played last year. All of these teams were fine last year, but none of them looked like they could really compete for a title. With a small sample size of five weeks under our belt, it is a treat to see some newer faces toward the top of the leaderboard as we head into 2025.

FireWolves Haven’t Taken a Step

After an incredible run to the finals last year, where they met with an invincible Buffalo Bandits squad, the Albany FireWolves have started the year 1-3. The team was extremely young last year, and I’m sure the front office was really hoping these guys would take a step forward in the offseason, building off the momentum they had. Sadly, the team still looks very young and has struggled to find their groove this year. They have a plus-five goal differential and one of the best goals-against margins in the league, so defense appears to be doing its job. The offense just needs to find some rhythm with the young growing stars and hopefully turn the season around in 2025. This team should be a force in the NLL for years to come, but they are already starting on a downward slope with three losses to their one win.

Jeff Teat Needs Help

With the New York Riptide relocating to Ottawa as the Black Bears, many hoped for a new era of lacrosse for Jeff Teat in the NLL. The reigning PLL MVP had a remarkable NLL season last year but did not necessarily accumulate the wins the team had hoped for. The team currently has a 2-1 record, with their only loss coming against the Buffalo Bandits. It will be interesting to see how this team continues moving forward because they are only averaging 10 goals a game. Teat is doing everything he can, but he needs more help from the supporting cast if this team wants to win at a high level this year.

Lacrosse Fans Are Missing Out on the NLL Experience

The National Lacrosse League has been around for quite some time now. Founded back in 1986, the league has been around for over 38 years. This is quite some history to have under a professional sports league’s belt. For those living under a rock, the National Lacrosse League is the oldest professional lacrosse league and consists of 14 box lacrosse teams. With a plethora of teams spanning all the way from Vancouver, Canada to Atlanta, Georgia, it begs the question why the league has not gained more popularity. If you were to walk up to any youth lacrosse player in the States right now and ask them what their favorite professional lacrosse team was, none of them would mention an NLL team. But why exactly is that?

This boggles my mind, especially considering that the National Lacrosse League is the oldest professional lacrosse league there is. It has been some of the most consistent and exciting lacrosse at the pro level for multiple decades now. Each team has dedicated fan bases and a plethora of talent. The Buffalo Bandits, for example, routinely sell out their 19,000-person stadium that they share with the Buffalo Sabres. They play more games than any other professional league and specifically play in the American offseason of the winter to late spring months. I myself am a pretty die-hard Buffalo Bandits fan and make sure that I’m tuning in to every game available, but why is this not translating to the youth or just more fans in general?

I hate to say it, but it pretty much is as simple as there’s not enough box lacrosse down here in the States. The game has become so hyper-fixated on the field equivalent of lacrosse that many players do not have an understanding of what box lacrosse is in general. Lacrosse already being an expensive sport as it is, try to factor in an ice rink with grass turf and even more equipment is a tall order here in America. In Canada, these factors aren’t as much of an issue as many of the players already have similar equipment from hockey, and there are plenty of ice rinks to go around. It is a real shame because the NLL is putting out a great product night in and night out. The games are very physical and intense from start to finish. Players can learn a thing or two just by watching the box game, as with a smaller field, goals are harder to come by with less space to work with. Many players could really grow their game just by watching box lacrosse and seeing how the players are generating ways to get shots on the net.

So how do we get more people invested in the National Lacrosse League? I’m not going to beat a dead horse, but we very much need to introduce box lacrosse more in the United States. It is certainly growing as I have attended multiple box tournaments in the Midwest, but it still is not where it needs to be. An even better starting point would just be coaches encouraging their players to watch more lacrosse. Putting in a valiant effort to get involved in hosting watch parties and ensuring that players are getting exposed to all different aspects of the sport. The game of box is beautiful, but there are not enough individuals being introduced to it. I promise you, if you take the time to introduce the youth to all of the great things coming out of the NLL and box lacrosse, you will have fans hooked for life.

I hate to seem like that’s the simple answer, but sometimes a simple answer is really all that needs to get done. It is very clear that not enough individuals in the United States know what box lacrosse even is. Those individuals that might have an idea of what it is might not have the opportunity to play in their area or have given the NLL a true shot. It is tough to get into a new professional sports league like the NLL if you do not have a team in your region or you do not have other individuals joining with you on this endeavor. I really would love to see an attempt from coaches and players across the country to truly grow the game and expose more individuals to the game of box lacrosse. The stream qualities are better than ever for the NLL and the player storylines are always fascinating year to year. There is no reason that the NLL shouldn’t be one of the most talked about things on a weekly basis in the lacrosse world. Are you doing your job and duty to grow the game by spreading your knowledge on the NLL?

Rochester Knighthawks: 2024-25 Season Preview

The Rochester Knighthawks have begun the new season of the NLL in spectacular fashion, defeating the Las Vegas Desert Dogs 14-12 in a game that set the tone for what promises to be an exciting campaign. Coming off a strong season last year, Rochester is more determined to go farther in the 2024-2025 playoffs. Last season the Knighthawks showed much determination, they barely missed the opportunity for a deeper playoff run. The Knighthawks posses the talent and young role players to put the pieces together and make a run this year, avenging last years playoff disappointment.

In the offseason, the Rochester Knighthawks made many calculated moves to try to find the right fit. The addition of Ian Llord and Chad Tutton added a load of experience to the back end, with a chip on their shoulders, while Anthony Joaquim and Brandon Robinson bring depth and versatility to the squad. These moves should help solidify the core for them and give a lot more options for Rochester through the grueling schedule. Losing Thomas Whitty does hurt a little, but this frees up time for the younger players to get into bigger roles.

Some of the must-watch early-season matchups include an interstate showdown with the Buffalo Bandits on December 7th. This will be a big test for Rochester, as Buffalo remains one of the powerhouses in the league. Possibly even more highlighted is December 13th, when Rochester will visit Vancouver-an event that tests not just their stamina but also their ability to adapt. The April 19 regular-season ending rematch with the Toronto Rock will no doubt be a game filled with playoff ramifications that no fan will want to miss.

The key to Rochester’s success will be the continued dominance of Connor Fields. Last season, Fields was an absolute force, coming through in moments when it mattered most. Where he cements his status as one of the cornerstones in the Knighthawks lineup is when he leads the offense but is able to focus on the greater goals of the team. As he said, “At the end of the day, when you sit back and look at the year you had personally, none of that is ever above the team’s success.” That sums up the kind of culture Rochester wants to develop: a team-first culture with championship aspirations.

On paper, the Knighthawks are indeed much stronger with these additions, but how those pieces fit together remains a question. Chemistry will be paramount, especially in the first weeks of the year, with tough opponents lined up who will expose any remaining weaknesses. The defense will need to tighten up, particularly against high-powered offenses like Buffalo and Toronto. Moreover, the transition game of the Knighthawks will also be put under test as they look for a balance between aggressive play and giving away not so many turnovers. But perhaps the more exciting thing about Rochester’s approach, however, is the commitment to growth. With a mix between some veteran leadership and the energy of youth, the Knighthawks seem primed to give chase for a playoff position.

Their opening win against Las Vegas showed flashes of just how good they can be at times, with many of their key players performing under the bright lights of critical moments. Now comes the task of consistency and tightening those areas where they fell last year. Optimism abounds as the Rochester Knighthawks head into this new season. With the roster they have, some big matchups ahead, and a leader like Connor Fields leading the charge, the Knighthawks can actually make some noise in the league this year. Rochester fans are champing at the bit to see if this is the year their team takes the next step toward championship glory.

Philadelphia Wings: 2024-25 Season Preview

The Philadelphia Wings enter the 2024-2025 campaign off the heels of what was a competitive 2023-2024 campaign. While the Wings seemed to be in a better place with flashes of greatness last season, they did fall short of their own postseason aspirations. Finishing just outside of playoff contention, with a record of 6-12, highlighted their inconsistency into close games. Key Players Mitch Jones and Joe Resetarits led the charge offensively, while Zach Higgins represented a dependably anchor between the pipes. The Philadelphia Wings enter this season hoping to make the jump from competitive to elite.

The Philadelphia Wings reshaped their roster with some big offseason moves to date. Major adds include Nick Damude in the goal and acquiring Tony Malcom, adding experience and versatility to the team. One of the bigger names signed is high-profile draft pick Brennan O’Neill, the top prospect in the draft. These moves continue to show the commitment of the Wings to find a balance between veteran presence and emerging talent. On the flip side, moving out key contributors in Ben McIntosh and Taite Cattoni presents a challenge; the offensive production these players provided will need to be replaced. How quickly the new pieces fit will go a long way toward the ultimate success of the team.

The season kicked off with a really difficult test in the form of the San Diego Seals, showcasing just about all of the worst and best from the Wings. In the end, the high-flying action saw the Wings fall 15-18 despite a truly valiant effort. There was a starring performance by Brennan O’Neill in his debut and he was able to prove why he is believed to be one of the greatest young talents. Still, poor moments in key spots on defense led to too many bad goals as the team is working on its chemistry. San Diego capitalized on these mistakes, underlining the importance of tightening up defensively if the Wings want to compete with the league’s top teams.

Looking ahead, the Philadelphia Wings have a regular season chock-full of marquee matchups that could define their season. Opening night at home against the Las Vegas Desert Dogs will provide an early chance to bounce back and get a win in front of their fans. The most intriguing game, of course, would have to be the one on February 22 with the Albany FireWolves, pitting two teams against each other that have championship aspirations. And the April 12 game against the Georgia Swarm might carry significant playoff implications as well, since it’s their last home game. These games will give the Wings a platform to show where they’ve improved and solidify their position in the league.

The strengths for the Philadelphia Wings include depth on offense and a high upside on some of their younger guys. Brennan O’Neill has already had an impact, and the veteran presence of Mitch Jones brings leadership and consistency to the score sheet. Adding Nick Damude in goal brings a different dynamic which the team will certainly adapt to in the coming weeks. But there are still gaps in defensive coordination and late-game execution that showed up in the loss to the Seals, and it is areas like these where the Wings will need to take the next step.

The Philadelphia Wings have all the makings of a young playoff team this season, but their road will be quite difficult. They possess depth from experienced leaders down to young talent, and with those pieces, they can compete with the best of the league. Whether or not they can find consistency to execute in those biggest moments remains to be seen. If they can, Philadelphia could be one of the teams to watch during the 2024-2025 NLL season.

Georgia Swarm: 2024-25 Season Preview

The Georgia Swarm are feeling optimistic and hungry for improvement entering the 2024-2025 NLL season. The team fell short of their goals last season, showing flashes of brilliance behind the leadership of Lyle Thompson. Dynamic in his play, Thompson was able to inspire teammates; he once again is expected to be the focal point for the Georgia Swarm offense. Now backed this season by key offseason additions, a favorable mix in returning talent, and new defensive focus, the Swarm need to build on strengths that had them so close but lacked ultimately cost them in 2023-2024.

The Georgia Swarm had a very active offseason, highlighted by adding Joey Cupido. A star transition player, Cupido brings a much needed dose of speed and energy into the Swarm’s lineup-a much-needed dose after serious deficiencies in the last. He is joined by names such as Seth Van Schepen and Toron Eccleston, who bring depth and variety. No key losses means the Swarm didn’t lose any sort of big pieces while improving. It’s pretty clear how Joey Cupido felt about coming to Georgia: “I’ve been counting down the days until camp. I feel like a kid on Christmas now that it’s finally here.” That energy and enthusiasm could be just what it takes to push this team over the top.

This year’s schedule is chock-full of key matchups that will truly test the mettle of the Georgia Swarm. An early statement can be made in their home opener against the San Diego Seals on December 7. On January 4, the Swarm host Toronto on “Native Heritage Night,” a game honoring the sport’s Indigenous roots and showcasing an incredible legacy of Lyle Thompson. The final home game against defending champion Buffalo Bandits on April 19 could prove critical in their playoff push. With such high-stakes games on the horizon, the Swarm will need consistency and resilience throughout the season.

Offensively, one of the biggest strengths Georgia offers is the firepower with Lyle Thompson leading the charge along with other talented attackers. Thompson brings vision, can score, and leads the charge. Additions of Cupido and Van Schepen also fortify their transition game, which should improve their chances on fast breaks. On the defensive side of things, Georgia had some struggles at times last season, but with the addition of Cupido, there’s hope this team improves in that area. If their defense can complement their offense effectively, the Swarm could be a tough team to beat. The major obstacle facing the Georgia Swarm is the inconsistency of their defense, which hurt them so badly last season. The offseason moves helped that area, but it’s to be seen how the new additions will mesh with the core.

With a revamped roster, marquee matchups, and the steady brilliance of Lyle Thompson, the 2024-2025 Georgia Swarm are positioned to make noise. Reclaiming their playoff spot will take work, cohesion, but this team has it in them, with the will to do so. The fans are hopeful for the Swarm to get back to those winning ways, bringing a lot of excitement on the floor. This could be the change of years for the Georgia Swarm, who have been attempting to rise once again into the top echelons of the NLL.

Entering the 2024-2025 NLL season, the Las Vegas Desert Dogs will look to bounce back after not getting to where they wanted last season. The Desert Dogs at times showed flashes in their sophomore year but could not string together consistency throughout the year and fell outside the playoff picture. However, standout performances from a handful of key players gave them hope for the future. This offseason, Las Vegas looked toward building a roster by focusing on acquiring players while still retaining some of the core talent on this team in hopes of taking an even larger leap than anyone might expect this year.

The Desert Dogs had a so-so season in 2023-2024, often competitive in most games yet falling short against stronger opponents. With the ability to create offensive chances, the team’s defensive lapses cost them crucial games. Despite these issues, Las Vegas toughed it out and posted wins against playoff-caliber opponents, proving they can compete at a high level. Goaltender Landon Kells was a shining star as he stole several games single-handedly and kept the Desert Dogs in some games they could have easily lost. As a whole, though, there just wasn’t enough depth or consistency on defense to overcome.

The offseason saw both entrances and exits from the Desert Dogs roster, signaling a change in intent to improve on areas of last year’s shortcomings. A key addition includes Dylan Kinnear, along with Kyle Killen, who are two offensive attackers expected to add some starch to the attack. Simpson and Jon Donville boast versatility and experience at either end of the floor. These men address the team’s needs for players that can get it done at both ends of the floor. Adding depth behind the goaltending unit is also Justin Geddie.

The Las Vegas Desert Dogs will have a tough schedule this season, but there are a couple of important matchups standing out along the way. The regular season opens on December 6 against Colorado, and that game should set the bar for competitiveness. On January 4, a game against Albany has an interesting individual matchup in emerging stars Shawn Evans versus Dyson Williams. But perhaps the most hyped will be the “Battle of I-15” against the San Diego Seals on January 18, a rivalry game promising high-intensity action. On February 1, Las Vegas will host a “Tucker Out Night” event against the Georgia Swarm-one that showcases the team is committed to community engagement as highly as taking on the hottest opponents.

The strengths of the team are an emerging offensive core that has been bolstered by offseason acquisitions. The Desert Dogs now boast a much deeper attack, one that should be able to produce when it counts most. There’s also stability between the pipes, as the combination of Kells and Geddie will help make the difference in close games. But once again, the question will be team defense. Though Simpson and Donville bring hope, there’s a significant difference between putting the pieces together and playing as a cohesive unit. In all, the Desert Dogs need consistency on both ends of the floor if they are to get back in order their playoff aspirations.

The Las Vegas Desert Dogs are due for the next step in development as the 2024-2025 season kicks in. With their rebuilt roster and a newly invigorated sense of determination, they hope to make some noise in the competitive world of the NLL. There is every reason for Las Vegas fans to believe this could be a turning point for the hometown Desert Dogs.

Halifax Thunderbirds: 2024-25 Season Preview

The Halifax Thunderbirds want to fly into the 2024-2025 NLL season with increased hype from the last season. The Thunderbirds finished off the 2023-2024 season as one of the toughest team’s in the league with a well-rounded attack and a relentless defense. While they fell short of advancing deep into the postseason, their quarterfinal rematch this season against the Albany FireWolves on December 28 will be a chance to prove their mental early in the season. The Thunderbirds need to set the tone in the regular season for what could be a breakthrough year for the team.

Of all of the moves that the Thunderbirds made this off-season, the most promising had to be the signing of transition player Thomas Hoggarth, who brings a lot of defense and some much-needed spark to offense. He is complemented by fellow newcomers Jason Knox and Mike Robinson to add depth to the roster in Halifax. All these changes have been an attempt to fill in some of the gaps from last year’s season where the team came up short in their expectations. Despite those gains, key contributors Ryan Benesch, Eric Fannell, and Austin Shanks did indeed say goodbye to the Thunderbirds. Their departures create a mix of challenges and opportunities for the team to evolve with a refreshed lineup.

It’s been an extremely busy Halifax Thunderbirds training camp, but that’s exactly the impression that has been built upon-just how urgent and competitive it’s going to be around this Thunderbirds team, as noted by Mike Robinson. This renewed sense of purpose is so key as the Thunderbirds approach marquee matchups, like the home opener against the Calgary Roughnecks on December 7. Another must-watch fight is the March 7 takedown against the Toronto Rock, a team against whom Halifax wants revenge after last year’s disappointments.

Fans and analysts are salivating to see how the Thunderbirds react when the pressure is high as this team is too good to not contend for a title. Offensively, Halifax remains above par with expectations that players such as Clarke Petterson and Cody Jamieson will continue their game-changing performances. That spotlight will also shift with all new additions, especially Hoggarth, expected to easily transition into Halifax’s high-energy style of play. On the other side of the field, the Thunderbirds’ defense—bolstered by a handful of transition stars—is set on firming up their unit in hopes of combating the most explosive offenses in the league. As the Thunderbirds take on rival opponents like the Buffalo Bandits on April 12, it would be their defensive capability that would most likely dictate their hopes in the postseason.

The chemistry and execution lie in the way of a success story for Halifax this season. With an aggressive rebuilding of the roster and a challenging schedule, how quickly they manage to adapt to it will indeed be very critical. Naturally, the fans are excited to see how these Thunderbirds capitalize on an opportunity to regain their earlier status as an elite contender. The Thunderbirds strive not only to earn a berth in the playoffs but to move deeper in their quest for the championship.

The Thunderbirds’ journey this season is one filled with promise. With new talent complementing their core and a real focus on rectifying those areas where they fell short in the past, Halifax stands ready to rise to the occasion. In games, the Thunderbirds will be given the chance to stake their claim among the NLL’s most dynamic teams. Halifax Thunderbirds fans have plenty of reasons to believe that this may finally be the year.

Ottawa Black Bears: 2024-25 Season Preview

The Ottawa Black Bears, coming into the first season with a lot of expectations, have moved from New York, where they were playing as the Riptide. A new beginning for this organization but one with excitement in the nation’s capital. The Black Bears would love to make some noise this year led by star Jeff Teat. Teat, who scored an incredible 131 points last season, is expected to spearhead the charge once more. Coach Dan Ladouceur has praised Teat’s drive for success, citing his will to win championships. As the team rebrands and begins a new chapter in their new home, the Ottawa Black Bears are ready to leave their mark.

The 2023-2024 season was one where, as the New York Riptide at the time, the team never really found their groove and ultimately finished outside of the playoff picture. However, with Teat having a strong year and others like Connor Kearnan and Reilly O’Connor playing good lacrosse, there was something to build on. The Black Bears took advantage of the opportunity during the off-season, and they didn’t hold anything back. Notable additions include goaltender Zach Higgins, who brings a wealth of experience between the pipes, and defenders Jacob Dunbar and Nathan Grenon, both of whom add depth to a defense that needed shoring up. These moves signal the team’s commitment to competing in their new city.

The Black Bears have a busy schedule this year, starting with an inaugural home game against the Toronto Rock on November 29th. This first game serves not only to celebrate lacrosse’s premiere in Ottawa but also as a possibility of making a statement early against a top opponent. Other highlights include the December 13 matchup against the Buffalo Bandits, where Jeff Teat will face off against reigning MVP Josh Byrne in a highly explosive game. Adding to the schedule is the February 15 matchup with the Albany FireWolves, as Coach Ladouceur will also be going head-to-head against Glenn Clark. With matchups like these, the Black Bears are well-positioned to capture the attention of lacrosse fans across the league.

The Black Bears have an extremely solid core on offense, but the questions about their defensive capabilities remain: how will they be able to keep off some of the league’s top scorers? There were simply too many breakdowns last season that left their goalies out to dry – something they definitely cannot continue doing.

These are concerns that the addition of Higgins in net and the defensive reinforcements should help, but how quickly the unit gels will be critical. Offensively, Teat is in a class of his own as a playmaker, but secondary scoring needs to step up to take some pressure off the star forward. Players like Kearnan and O’Connor will be looked to for consistent production.

The Black Bears open their inaugural season in the nation’s capital carrying with them a new fanbase starving for success. With a roster revamped to perfection, one of the most talented players in the world in Jeff Teat, and some marquee matchups, this has all the makings of a season to remember. The road won’t be easy, but the Black Bears are determined to make their mark in Ottawa and beyond.

Vancouver Warriors: 2024-25 Season Preview

The Vancouver Warriors enter the 2024-2025 season hell-bent on establishing their presence as a force in the NLL. An 8-10 record a season ago saw them barely miss out on the playoffs meaning they have much to prove this year. On offense, the Vancouver attack was highly reliant on Keegan Bal, who tallied 105 points, including 49 goals, proving he was capable of leading the attack. The offense was helped out by Adam Charalambides with 98 points and Ryan Martel with 73 points who consistently gave good support However the season was filled with overall inconsistencies at the most vital times.

The Vancouver Warriors hope a number of significant offseason moves can cure their ills, bringing in Payton Cormier, Jeff Cornwall, and Ryan Sheridan to add depth and versatility to the roster. These acquisitions aim to help both ends of the floor and strengthen Vancouver’s transition game, which was a big weak spot last season. Still, the Warriors also moved out Kyle Killen, one of their more important assets, and his absence is going to be felt a lot in the Warriors’ offensive rotations. As Kevin Crowley noted, the Warriors have to play with an all-or-nothing mentality if they want to maximize their potential and compete with the league’s top teams.

The complete schedule for 2024-2025 is here, with a lot of spicy matchups that the Vancouver Warriors can make noise in. Opening night pits Vancouver against the Colorado Mammoth on November 29th, setting both teams up early in the season. On December 13th, the Warriors host the Rochester Knighthawks on their home opener, trying to make a strong impression in front of their own fans. Other big matches include the “Battle of the Pacific” against the San Diego Seals on January 10th, showcasing a rivalry between two growing Western teams, while Vancouver’s regular season wraps up with a Fan Appreciation Night game against the Philadelphia Wings on April 19th – a game that may very well have playoff implications.

The Warriors’ success this season will hinge on their ability to maintain consistency and capitalize on their strengths. Keegan Bal leads the spearhead of their offense, though he has evolved his scoring prowess with much-improved playmaking ability continuing to be a very dynamic threat. Complementing that core will be new faces Cormier and Sheridan, who bring new life into the team. Jeff Cornwall will also feature on the defensive line and bring much-needed experience to hold down the backline. Goaltender Aden Walsh will also be very important as Vancouver looks for him to raise his game and bring stability between the pipes.

With these strengths, Vancouver still has some areas in which they may be put to the test. Defensive lapses and turnovers hurt the Warriors a year ago, sometimes leaving them at the mercy of their opponents in tight games. These are going to take a buy-in to discipline and communication from everyone. The loss of Killen will also require some younger players and newcomers to pick up the slack in an attempt to score and provide the secondary support to Bal and Charalambides.

The 2024-2025 season ushers in a new dawn in which the Vancouver Warriors can prove they belong among the league’s elite. The Warriors have added pieces to an already motivated roster, hoping to be one of those teams that will make the playoffs and thrill their fans all season long. Their journey to redefine their identity in hopes of competing for postseason glory starts on opening night.

Saskatchewan Rush: 2024-25 Season Preview

The Saskatchewan Rush are set to make a comeback they hope will see them revive some of their old glory in this coming 2024-2025 NLL season. The team had a respectable showing in the 2023-2024 season, bolstered by standout performances from Robert Church, who tallied an impressive 100 points, and Ryan Keenan, who added 90. Despite their efforts, the Rush fell short of making the playoffs, which showed the front office what needed to be improved moving forward. This is a team with much to prove and they have made many steps in the right direction going into 2025.

Saskatchewan was the team that did the most to address their issues this offseason, making a handful of impactful moves. When you add in Brock Haley, Matt Hossack, Levi Anderson, Austin Shanks, and Josh Zawada, you are making a commitment to enhance the team up in both offensive depth and defensive stability. It is in Haley where you get the most upside, though a proven scoring touch such as Shanks’ could complement Church and Keenan perfectly. Meanwhile, the team parted ways with core contributors such as Nathaniel Kozevnikov, Mike Mallory, and Laine Hruska, shifting the weight toward new talent and perspectives.

Building on that, the reputation of Matt Hossack as one of the more versatile transition players in the game has underlined the Rush’s commitment to controlling the pace. With such incredible ability to contribute on either side of the floor, which can run with the Rush’s highly hyped tempo system, Austin Shanks is a proven point getter who gives them a new weapon in an increasingly well-rounded offense. Meanwhile, maybe something that could be missed might be Kozevnikov’s physicality being given to transitions, but the Rush really appears like they are comfortable with how they’ve brought in their much-needed youth and younger acquisitions.

Moving forward, the strengths of the Rush include depth on offense and a great mix of veteran leadership with emerging talent that controls games. Robert Church remains the linchpin of the team’s offense, but the addition of Shanks and Zawada gives the attack a multi-dimensional edge. The team is really going to need its new faces to fit in like a glove if the team wants to make the playoffs this upcoming season. Contrarian views are that several areas of potential weaknesses persist around the Rush despite offseason upgrades. The transition game will take some time to come together due to the nature of bringing in so many new guys together which does take some adapting. Their goaltending, though serviceable, lacks the elite presence seen in other teams, which could pose challenges in close games. Fixing these areas will help the Rush reach big mileage toward what many forecast will be an eventual championship this season.

Saskatchewan Rush fan support has been one of the defining points of the Saskatchewan Rush since day one, and players like Zach Manns realize how important performing in front of the loyal base is. “Winning here would be huge, obviously. The fans are always lined up after games to meet us, so you can tell how much it means to them,” Manns said, reinforcing the overall desire to bring the championship trophy back to Saskatchewan. But the Rush are poised to do something big in 2024-2025 with key matchups set against rivals such as the Halifax Thunderbirds and Colorado Mammoth. It will come down to how well the team marries the new talent into the fold and adapts to the ever-growing competition.

Colorado Mammoth: 2024-25 Season Preview

The Colorado Mammoth head into the 2024-2025 season rejuvenated as they look to bounce back from a dismal last season. The Mammoth never got going last season, finishing dead last in the league standings with a record of 5-13. Colorado had a few bright spots in their lineup, including Eli McLaughlin, who led the Mammoth with 93 points, which included 43 goals. Connor Kelly added 64 points in just 15 games to show the offensive talent this team had when fully healthy. Eventually, defensive lapses and inconsistency on both ends of the floor derailed their season.

With this in mind, the Colorado Mammoth was determined to bounce back, making key additions in the offseason. They add both Dalton Sulver and Will Malcom; two good players who bring added vitality and skill to this roster. Other key addition was highly publicized transition player Owen Rahn, who should help the Mammoth get the ball up the floor so much more effectively. Colorado did lose Joey Cupido and Dylan Kinnear, and there are questions about how a team that lost veteran leadership will adjust. Brad Self emphasized the importance of accountability, stating that the Mammoth are focused on maintaining a competitive drive throughout the season.

The Mammoth have a forthcoming schedule that has them positioned to make a statement early. They open their season on November 29th against the Vancouver Warriors; both teams want that matchup to set the tone. The Mammoth host their first-ever home game on March 23rd against the Ottawa Black Bears in a historic day for the relocated franchise. Colorado’s rivalry with the Saskatchewan Rush is re-ignited on March 29th, in a physical affair that no doubt had playoff implications. One of the biggest events during the season would have to be the “Rumble at the Loud House” on April 5th as the Mammoth host the defending champion Buffalo Bandits. Over the course of the season, these are going to be very pivotal matchups that will challenge Colorado’s resolve and their competitiveness with the best.

Colorado certainly could brag about their core on offense, led by McLaughlin and Kelly-both of whom have shown numerous times that they know how to score against any defense. Their young additions like Rahn and Sulver provide the energy and versatility that should improve their transition game. Goaltending once again becomes a focal point, with Dillon Ward looking to regain the form that put him among the league’s best. Questions, however, remain on how much tighter the Mammoth can get defensively. Poor defense often left Ward out to dry last year, leading to some tough losses.

The Colorado Mammoth are looking to turn the page on a disappointing 2023-2024 campaign as a new season takes effect. The Mammoth hope that some new faces and an overall renewed sense of purpose will prove their team is capable of contending at the highest level. How they integrate the new players and remaining consistent has become vital. Fans can expect a determined team ready to bring excitement back to the Loud House while re-igniting their push for the playoffs.

The regular season went surprisingly well for the eventual runners-up in this year’s NLL playoffs but the FireWolves really made a run in the playoffs, ending up against the Buffalo Bandits in the finals. The offensive leader for Albany was Alex Simmons the Rookie of the Year who finished with 96 points on 38 goals and 58 assists and was very important to the team’s success as his impact as a rookie instantly enhanced the team’s ceiling last year.

This offseason, the Albany FireWolves made a number of significant roster moves in hopes to make it back to a championship game. Key additions include Dyson Williams, Will Johnston, Eric Fannell, and Jackson Raposo all bring new dynamics to the team with Dyson Williams creating the most buzz. Simmons referred to him as a “generational talent” who can take over games with his scoring and playmaking. However, Albany also lost Nathan Grennon and Anthony Joaquim, which begs some questions about how the new players will fit into their system.

Included in the FireWolves’ 2024-2025 schedule are a handful of marquee matchups that will truly test their championship aspirations. They meet the Las Vegas Desert Dogs on January 1st in a battle pitting some of the league’s young stars against each other. Another crucial matchup comes on February 22nd against the Philadelphia Wings, where they will look to assert their dominance against another up and coming team. A championship rematch against Buffalo on March 22nd will give Albany an opportunity to avenge their defeat along with a semifinal rematch on April 12th against the San Diego Seals.

Where the Albany FireWolves really want to focus on going into this new season is taking those strengths and building on some good things. The offense, though, with Simmons running it and fueled by the addition of Williams, can be one of the most dynamic units in the league. The defense is solid with a core of Colton Watkinson and Jackson Nishimura anchoring things, but it needs to make sure they hold in big moments. Goaltender Doug Jamieson is surely riding high following an impressive 80% save percentage last year, and still remains one of the backbones of the team’s success. The FireWolves need to find a way to support his brilliance against the league’s top offenses with a stronger defense in front of him.

Perhaps the biggest challenge for Albany will be finding that balance between the talented young core and the pressure for high expectations. With Simmons and Williams leading the charge the FireWolves could be dominant but they have to mentally dial in for the grind of a long season with newly found expectations. Questions still remain of how well the new players like Johnston and Fannell will fit in and how the team will adjust to the continually evolving competitive landscape of the league.

Everything is in place for the Albany FireWolves to make another deep playoff run and have a realistic shot at taking the NLL championship. Mixing in veteran star talent with some promising newcomers, coupled with a need for revenge, could make Albany one of those teams nobody wants to face in 2024-2025.

Toronto Rock: 2024-2025 Season Preview

The Toronto Rock enter the 2024-2025 NLL season with redemption at the forefront of their minds after a strong 2023-2024 campaign that ended in playoff disappointment. Finishing atop the standings in the regular season with an impressive 15-3 record, the Toronto Rock proved why they are perennial contenders. That dominance was fueled by elite showings from Mark Matthews, who paced the team with 98 points, and Tom Schreiber, who contributed 76 points in a shortened 13-game season. The offense got plenty of support from the league’s top-rated defense, backstopped by Goaltender of the Year Nick Rose and his league-leading 9.18 goals-against average. A semifinal sweep at the hands of eventual champions, the Buffalo Bandits, though, left the Rock wanting more.

The Toronto offseason saw them go through some losses and gains. Some of the losses included Sheldon Burns and Brandon Slade, but probably more vital was the missing piece, an important component of the attack-Dan Lintner. Meanwhile, the Rock made key additions: Jake Darlison, Elijah Gash, and the return of Latrell Harris, who was out with injury. Head coach Matt Sawyer lauded Gash as a “physical specimen” who’s still yet to reach his full potential. These additions indicate a commitment from Toronto to solidifying its defense and cementing its status as one of the stingier teams to score on in the league.

The 2024-2025 schedule is replete with key matchups that will test Toronto early and often. The November 29th season opener against the newly relocated Ottawa Black Bears will set the stage for what promises to be a fiercely competitive campaign. The Toronto home opener on December 7th is a rematch of last season’s memorable battles against Albany. Fans will also mark February 14th on their calendar for a Valentine’s Day match-up with arch-nemesis Buffalo, a contest which will no doubt see the renewal of hostilities between the two juggernauts. And finally, an April 19th quarterfinal rematch with the Rochester Knighthawks could go a long way in determining what shape the playoff picture takes as the season winds down to its climax.

As the Toronto Rock opens the new season, they’ll be building on their strengths and working out the lingering kinks. None better than the core of Mitch de Snoo and Brad Kri, arguably among the league’s best-forming a very important piece of the team’s defense. Consistency from Nick Rose in net again will be a strong determining factor in how far the Rock go. Mark Matthews and Tom Schreiber will continue to dominate in the scoring department, while Corey Small and Dan Craig add more gunfire. The team is dependent on a number of such players, and this can test deepness, especially if injury issues abound. The need for balance in the roster is going to be key, with the integration of new additions in players such as Elijah Gash and Jake Darlison.

The Toronto Rock enter this season of high expectations, 2024-2025, looking to regain the top spot in the NLL and avenge last year’s heartbreak. With veteran leadership, strong points on defense, and new talent, the Rock have all the tools needed to make another push for the championship. In store for the fans is a season of excitement, intensity, and that dogged determination that has come to define the Toronto Rock.

Buffalo Bandits: 2024-25 Season Preview

The Buffalo Bandits head into the 2024-2025 NLL season as reigning champions, hoping to build off the success that was achieved last year. After a commanding series sweep of 2-0 in the finals, the Bandits emerged as champions over the Albany FireWolves. Consistent play defined their rise: an excellent regular-season record of 11-7 turned into key wins over Toronto in the semifinals. The Buffalo Bandits showed why they remain as one of the league’s most-feared teams.

At the end of the season, Josh Byrne had run away with the league for MVP honors, standing at an incredible 135 points on 53 goals and 82 assists. Dhane Smith was also not so far behind his teammate, with a sum of 134 points to seal Buffalo’s dynamic offense as one of the most feared in the NLL. Their defensive core was spearheaded by Steve Priolo, with Matt Vinc solid between the pipes. Vinc recorded a very respectable 78% save percentage over his 16 games of action. The Bandits brought outstanding balance to both ends of the floor. Their win raised the bar even higher since every other team now is gunning for the champions this year.

Let’s start with some of the notable changes during Buffalo’s offseason:. They added grave depth to one of the most impressive rosters in the league with additions such as Taite Cattoni and Lukas Nielsen. In turn, they moved on from Brandon Robinson and Dalton Sulver, allowing fresh faces to rise to the challenge. “Nothing comes easy,” as head coach John Tavares so importantly stressed. You’ve got to work for anything you get.” That will be the philosophy as the Bandits seek to duplicate their success in an even stronger league.

Looking ahead to the 2024-2025 season, top matchups featuring the Buffalo Bandits include: The December 28 opener against the Rochester Knighthawks is their banner-raising night, making this a great starting point to the season. Another cannot-miss marquee clash is the “Battle at the Border” against the Toronto Rock on January 10th-a rematch from the hot semifinal battle last season. The championship rematch against Albany on February 1st and the April 19th showdown with Georgia complete the list of must-see games throughout the schedule that will pit the Bandits against some of the league’s top contenders and are an early indicator of their capabilities in defending the title.

As the season churns along, the Buffalo Bandits will rely on their strengths in order to fend off the competition. Offensively, it remains a juggernaut-many compliments of Byrne and Smith-while Vinc anchors a defense that has been among the league’s best. New talent joins the fold, meaning the Bandits should be deep enough to survive an entire season. But perhaps their biggest test will be complacency. Staying hunger and focused while carrying the target of defending champions will be the key.

The setup for another thrilling season with the Buffalo Bandits is in place, filled with all the talent and leadership that will keep them atop the NLL. Every team will be gunning at them, but certainly, the Bandits have been able to prove that they move under pressure. With a roster filled with huge stars, Buffalo has everything it needs in the pursuit of consecutive titles.

Top Reasons to Watch the 2024-2025 NLL Season

The upcoming 2024-2025 NLL season is packed with storylines that’ll keep fans locked in from the first whistle to the final goal. If you haven’t been tuning into the NLL lately, this season a great time to start. With the Buffalo Bandits looking to three-peat, top rookie Brennan O’Neill making his debut, the Albany FireWolves looking to prove last season was not a fluke, and even a brand-new identity for the former Riptide, there’s something for every fan. The league is gaining intensity and depth each year, and if last season’s action was any sign, we’re in for an even more competitive and unforgettable 2024-2025 NLL season.

To start, the Buffalo Bandits are coming in hot. After back-to-back championships, they’re in rare company with a shot at the three-peat. Led by MVP Josh Byrne and a veteran roster, Buffalo’s proven itself as a powerhouse. The backbone of their success, though, is Matt Vinc in the net. With years of elite performances, he’s still showing up as one of the league’s top goalies, and his presence could be what gets Buffalo through another season at the top. But the question remains: how much longer can he perform at this level? If Vinc can remain a wall in the cage, the Bandits look ready to make history and cement themselves as one of the all-time great dynasties.

One team that hopes to alter that script is the Toronto Rock, however. The Rock have attempted on more than one occasion in recent years to unseat the Bandits, but every attempt comes up empty. Of course, Toronto has the talent and the firepower to counter Buffalo, but when it has mattered most, Buffalo has gotten that little edge needed to come out on top. The Rock will need to bring something new to the table to finally get past Buffalo this year. If they can, it could completely shift the balance in the East. Otherwise, it’s shaping up to be another season where they’ll be looking up at the Bandits from second place.

Then there’s Brennan O’Neill, and we shouldn’t have to say much on him. All eyes are on Philadelphia’s first-overall pick now that he starts his NLL career. O’Neill’s known for his scoring and athleticism in the field game, and his arrival could transform the Wings’ offense if he is able to get acclimated with the box game. For Philly, he’s more than just a rookie—he’s a potential franchise cornerstone, and how he adjusts to the pace and physicality of the NLL will be something to watch all season. If he lives up to the hype, we’re looking at a serious offensive threat in Philly for years to come.

This coming season, the Albany FireWolves will work to live up to its new standard after a great playoff run last year that advanced them to the NLL Finals. They now wish to prove that it wasn’t just a lucky push. They have proven the ability to keep up with the league’s best level, but maintaining that success in a new season is another thing all together. With a big target on their backs, Albany has to prove they here and here to stay at this top level.

Speaking of changes, the New York Riptide are now the Ottawa Black Bears starting this upcoming 2024-2025 NLL season. New colors, new city, and a fresh start—it’s a clean slate for this team. The Riptide’s previous seasons have been marked by inconsistency, but the move to Ottawa might just be the shift they need. Perhaps they will find a fanbase can revitalize this energy needed to turn it all around and bring something very solid in competition with the rest of the league. It could be a storyline year on whether the Black Bears can do well with the new venue and culture shift.

Meanwhile, the San Diego Seals are working to overcome their playoff struggles. They have been one of the most exciting teams in the regular season year in and year out, but they haven’t been able to break that final barrier to the finals during the playoffs. They are full of chemistry and fire power, but the test is if they can come through when it matters the most. Until they break through and win a championship there will be questions about being able to hang with league top contenders come playoff time.

While the top teams battle it out, there’s also growing parity at the bottom of the league. It’ll be interesting to see which teams manage to claw their way out of the lower ranks and start competing at a higher level this year. With some rosters filling out and key acquisitions made in the offseason, we could see teams like the Las Vegas Desert Dogs or Vancouver Warriors step up and challenge the middle ranks of the league. For fans looking for an underdog story, this season has the potential for at least one team to make a surprising climb.

Between the Bandits’ hunt for a three-peat, O’Neill’s rookie season, the Rock’s battle to dethrone Buffalo, and the Black Bears’ fresh identity, there’s no shortage of reasons to tune in. The 2024-25 NLL season is set to be a thrilling ride, packed with action, drama, and the kind of moments that make lacrosse fans show up week after week. With so many storylines, it’s clear that the 2024-2025 NLL season could be one of the league’s best yet.

LEGENDS: Five Who Would Thrive in Today’s PLL

This week we’re doing a deep dive and looking at some of the games greats that could absolutely thrive under this year’s PLL Faceoff rule. The 32 second shot clock has transformed the league to the point where two-way middies are a hot commodity. It has also made people search for the almost extinct three-way midfielder.

Make no bones about it, there is a place for faceoff men in all areas of lacrosse. To see an All Star out of the lineup and people’s knee jerk reaction to things is unsettling, but teams are figuring it out. The purpose of this article is less about the rules and more about paying homage to the games greats whose skill set was out of this world.

The men listed below were do it all midfielders for their respective teams. Their ability to face off and jumpstart the offense would be a huge commodity in today’s PLL.

There are many deserving of this honor, but here is a list of five that would absolutely thrive in today’s PLL. Who are we missing?

Jon Reese – Yale

One of the games all time greats, Jon Reese has reached mythical status in recent years. Often overshadowed by Syracuse’s dominance, Reese was a menace for Yale. He was a do it all midfielder who never seemed to run out of gas. Reese received first team (1990) and honorable mention (1988, 1989) All-America honors as a four-year player at Yale. He was Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 1987 and received the Ivy League’s Player of the Year award and the USILA MacLaughlin Award as the nation’s top midfielder in 1990, when he set the NCAA single season record with 82 goals.

Reese led Yale to three Ivy League championships (1988-1990) and was Yale’s all-time leader for career goals (162) and points (200). He did all this while also playing football for Yale and was even invited to New York Giants training camp.

Andy Towers – Brown

The current Chaos coach was also an absolute animal at midfield. It’s criminal that both he and Jon Reese never made a world team, but their impact was huge for the game. Towers was a two-time first team All-American and All-Ivy performer (1991 and ’93), while earning Ivy League Player of the Year honors in 1993 and leading the team to three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He’s still all over the Brown record books for goals scored in a season (59) and a career (150).

Towers continued his playing career in both the indoor and outdoor circuits. For five years he played in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League and National Lacrosse League, plus played two seasons in Major League Lacrosse, earning All-Star honors in 2002. His ability to win draws and play offense would make him a perfect fit for today’s rules. His size would also make him an absolute Bear to handle for opposing defenses.

AT is #44

Geoff Snider – Denver

If I’m cornered in an alley and I need someone to help fight my way out, I’m calling Geoff Snider. He’s the man that was a huge catalyst behind Canada’s upset of the USA in the 2006 World Games. Unlike some others on this list, Snider was able to do it in both the indoor and outdoor game. An All-American at Denver, Snider absolutely tore it up both in the indoor and outdoor game.

The MVP of the 2006 World Games is all over both the indoor and outdoor record books. His skill set and personality would make him a fan favorite in the PLL. Snider is a flat-out winner and someone that would make any team he’s on better.

Doug Shanahan – Hofstra

Mr. Tewaaraton himself. Doug Shanahan was another dual sport college athlete that tore it up for the Hofstra Flying Dutchmen. Shanahan was a three-time All-American and took home the inaugural Tewaaraton Award. He was a three-time All-Conference selection and was named America East Most Valuable Player his senior season.

Shanahan finished his illustrious lacrosse career at Hofstra with 95 goals and 44 assists for 139 points and a Hofstra-record 450 ground balls. Shanahan enjoyed a 12-year MLL career and suited up for Team USA twice. In 2002 he was named MVP of the World Games for his play at the X and midfield.

Ryan Wade – UNC

A do it all midfielder out of the ACC, Ryan Wade was a player that was almost impossible to prepare for. He could hurt you in so many ways, and that made him even more dangerous. His ability to face off and stay on gave his teams a huge advantage. Wade was a three-time All-American at the University of North Carolina from 1992 through 1994. A two-time first team all American, Wade was tabbed as the USILA’s midfielder of the year in 1993. Wade was also the ACC’s player of the year in both 1993 and 1994.

North Carolina won four ACC championships during his tenure and captured the NCAA national championship in 1991. Wade was a member of two U.S. national senior teams, playing on the world champion U.S. Men’s National Team in both 1994 and 1998. He was selected to the All-World Team in 1998 and was named MVP in the 1998 games.

Buffalo Bandits Emerge Victorious in 2023 NLL Cup

The Buffalo Bandits won the 2023 NLL Cup on Saturday, capturing their first championship in 15 years. In a decisive Game 3 against the Colorado Mammoth at KeyBank Center, the Bandits dominated the entire game with a 13-4 win.

The Bandits’ journey to the championship was not without its challenges. The NLL was extremely competitive this year, yet Buffalo was still able to find success. Despite early setbacks, the Bandits finished as the top playoff seed with a 14-4 record.

In the Finals, the Mammoth managed to push the Bandits to the brink by winning Game 2 in Denver. However, Buffalo showed resilience in Game 3, leaving no room for doubt about their dominance on the lacrosse field. The Bandits’ victory was a testament to their overall team effort, exemplified by their complete performance on both ends of the field.

The return of Josh Byrne in Game 3, who missed the first two games of the Finals due to injury, proved to be the difference maker for the Bandits. Byrne put up four goals and three assists, igniting the Bandits’ offense. Dhane Smith, the Bandits’ standout player throughout the series, contributed a game-high nine points and seven assists, ultimately earning him the NLL Finals MVP title. The Bandits’ victory was a long time coming, as they had suffered Finals losses in 2016, 2019, and 2022.

The victory was built on a solid defensive effort led by goalie Matt Vinc, who made an impressive 46 saves in Game 3. Vinc’s performance established a new NLL record with his 30th career playoff win. The Bandits’ defense held the Mammoth to a mere four goals, setting another NLL record for the fewest goals scored in a Finals game.

The championship win marked a moment of redemption and celebration for the Bandits and their loyal fanbase, known as “Banditland.” The atmosphere at KeyBank Center was electric, with a crowd of 18,296 fans witnessing the historic triumph. The victory brought an end to the Bandits’ 15-year championship drought and added a fifth title to the franchise’s storied history.

For players like Dhane Smith and Matt Vinc, who had been part of previous championship disappointments, the victory was particularly meaningful. Smith emphasized that the championship was the ultimate goal and the pinnacle of their hard work and dedication.

The Buffalo Bandits’ triumph in the 2023 NLL Cup was well deserved, with the team coming so close to the throne in years prior. With their first championship in over a decade, the Bandits have solidified their place among the league’s elite teams.

Can the Buffalo Bandits Finally Get Over the Hump?

Buffalo in the NLL Finals. Sounds familiar? For the third straight season, the Bandits will play for a chance at a championship, and while the previous two attempts didn’t end the way they wanted, things feel different this time in Buffalo, who is looking for their first NLL Cup in 25 years. Let’s look at how the Bandits have overcome the heartache and used it as motivation.

Buffalo has had a lot of success since they were formed in 1992. They have won 13 division titles, seven conference titles, and four championships. Even with that winning tradition, they have been known for coming up short lately. They have made the NLL Cup final four of the last six seasons (which includes this season), and the three times prior, they have lost.

In 2016 Buffalo went 13-5 and won the East. Dhane Smith was MVP, and Buffalo rolled past New England in the East Finals. They faced the Saskatchewan Rush and lost the series 2-0. The Bandits played the Rush tough, losing by three combined goals in the two-game series.

In 2019 Buffalo again was the top seed entering the playoffs. They defeated New England, followed by Toronto to win the East. They played Calgary and were swept once again in the NLL Cup.

After the long Covid-19 break, Buffalo came out and proved to everyone that they were still the top dogs in the East. Dhane Smith won his second MVP leading Buffalo to a 14-4 record. They handled Albany in round one and snuck past Toronto in the East Finals, winning both games by one goal. It seemed like Buffalo was on their way to a title, but they were upset by the Colorado Mammoth, losing game three in Buffalo.

Unfortunately, Buffalo has a painful history in the playoffs, whether it’s the Bills’ failures since 1965 or the Sabres still needing a Stanley Cup. However, even with their previous championships, the Bandits are hoping to avoid being included in the long history of failures.

“We’re here to do a job that we haven’t been able to get done the past two times,” Bandits forward Chris Cloutier said. “We’ve got to come with a different mentality and come ready to play and not take any games off, not take a minute off.”

A lot is at stake for Buffalo. If the Bandits aren’t able to get over the hump, could it be time to shake up the roster? Matt Vinc isn’t getting any younger; if the Bandits don’t win it this year, does Vinc come back at age 41 for one more shot with the Bandits? John Tavares is one of the greatest players the league has ever seen, but he might be labeled as a coach who “can’t win the big one.” You never want to look ahead, but if Buffalo doesn’t win this year, there might be changes before next season.

It’s not all doom and gloom. This Buffalo Bandits team has a different look and feel compared to the previous two years. They have more grit and toughness to them and more resilience. Dhane Smith commented on that after their playoff win against Rochester. “We found ways to win. I think that was the difference from this year than last year. I think last year we were a little bit cocky, and we were the team to beat.”

Having that chip on their shoulder, and battling through injuries, has helped the Bandits find chemistry throughout the season, but Smith knows that it doesn’t matter how well you play in the regular. What matters is what happens in the postseason. “We need to work together, and everyone needs to step up. I know for myself I need to do the dirty things, especially in the playoffs. It’s never going to be handed to us.”

They say, “third time’s a charm,” and the Buffalo Bandits hope that saying stays true. This Bandits team may have some similar names as the previous two seasons, but the team has made some changes to their game and mentality this season. Hopefully, the team and the city of Buffalo will be able to end the heartbreak and capture their first NLL cup since 2008.
