Black Players Coalition Speaks Out

It’s impossible to witness what has happened within the last few months, especially the last few weeks, with Jacob Blake, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd and not be impacted as black men and equally as Human Beings. In order for us to achieve healing and progress, we must come together – Black, White, Latino, Indigenous, People of Color, ALL OF US – to confront the painful realities of  racism, police brutality and Injustice in order to create a unified plan ahead to achieve Justice and Equity. We are proud of our fellow Black athletes across the NBA, WNBA, MLS, MLB and athletes  around the world standing up to show that we are more than athletes, we are Leaders. Today, we come together to join in that fight for Justice.

On Sunday, August 30, the Black Players Coalition, currently made up of the only four black players in Major League Lacrosse, and Commissioner Sandy Brown discussed the sense of urgency to advance the dialogue of social justice and achieve measurable change in race relations within our  league and the country. We had a candid and impassioned meeting together where the depth of the  pains we are feeling and realization of the magnitude of the moment were appreciated on both sides. We are encouraged that our message was heard. Together, we as players, along with the  Commissioner and the league as a whole, must be united to condemn racism, police brutality, social  injustice and hatred. It is imperative we work together to orchestrate change.

Following the national tragedies surrounding Jacob Blake and the Kenosha shooting, the Black Players Coalition is here to hold MLL accountable to enact demonstrable action and measurable  hange. We want to see MLL commit to social justice initiatives around the country, but especially  in the communities in which it operates. We want to see teams and players more actively involved in  economic, social and community investment in underprivileged communities. At the league itself,  we want to see a robust diversity and inclusion program for the league front-office and each team.  And more broadly, we want the league and its players to invest time and resources into voting initiatives ahead of the November 2020 election.

Together, we will set the standard for being a true ally through the exclusivity of lacrosse.

It has been uplifting to see athletes take action to benefit their communities, with their voices  supported by their respective leagues. We understand that we are no different. We are advocates for change during this global movement. It is emotionally, mentally and spiritually exhausting to watch  our people being shot and killed due to police brutality, racial divide and killing of people of color  during this time. As professional lacrosse players, we understand the impact we can create within the  communities in which we represent. With that being said, we are providing services and resources  that will propel and improve the environment for people of color in underrepresented communities.

While these conversations can be uncomfortable, we must work to create accountability and change  for a healthier orld for all.

We desire to play this game of Lacrosse that we love. But, we are men first and must equally see our  people be successful in the overall game of life.

Signed in One Unified Voice,

Kris Alleyne, Mark Ellis, Isaiah Davis-Allen, and Chad Toliver

Major League Lacrosse Announces Annapolis to Host 20th Anniversary Season

Boston, MA, July 2, 2020 – Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced today the updated 2020 regular
season schedule. This season, beginning July 18th, will be played entirely in the city of Annapolis, Maryland.
The season will be one-week long and will host all six MLL teams. The week will conclude with a final-four
playoff, crowning the 2020 MLL champion the weekend of July 25-26. The Major League Lacrosse season
will air on the ESPN Networks and ESPN+.

“Lacrosse fans missed their spring seasons and are now eager and excited to see a return of the game this
summer,” said MLL Commissioner, Alexander Brown. “While celebrating what will be our 20th anniversary
season, MLL has great respect for the responsibility that comes with returning to the field. We have been
working closely with our local, state, and national health officials to make decisions based on the latest
medical and public health advice available. We look forward to returning to Annapolis and again providing
the very best our sport has to offer.”

Games will be played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the home of 2019 MLL Champions, the
Chesapeake Bayhawks. Major League Lacrosse has had a presence in the Chesapeake region since the
inception of the league in 2001. In 2019 MLL hosted the All-Star Game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial
Stadium. Hosting the league’s 20th anniversary season in Annapolis builds on the great lacrosse tradition of
the region.

“The Bayhawks have been the pinnacle of lacrosse in Maryland, the nation’s epicenter of lacrosse, for twenty
years,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “As we gradually reopen the state for business and entertainment, it is
great to see national organizations like Major League Lacrosse invest in Maryland.”

MLL, under the guidance of a team of medical professionals from all six MLL markets, has developed a
comprehensive strategy to ensure the health and safety of the players, staff and all personnel onsite for the
2020 season. MLL has established a COVID Safety Protocol Officer to oversee the adherence and execution
of the safety plan. Additionally, MLL is working closely with their partner, Cascade, to offer players access to
their newly developed Face Shield, a completely clear, physical barrier designed specifically for SEI-Certified
Cascade Helmets.

To protect the health and safety of players and staff, there will not be fans onsite for the 2020 MLL season.

Lacrosse Community Rallies Around MLL’s 20th Anniversary Collegiate Draft

Major League Lacrosse (MLL) hosted the 20th anniversary Collegiate Draft Presented by Cascade last week, on Monday May 4. While the lacrosse community was unable to celebrate the next generation of MLL players in person, they rallied around the digital execution with a 76% increase in impressions year-over-year. Headlining the draft was a tribute to those going above and beyond in each of MLL’s six communities during these unprecedented times. Each team and the league named one honorary draft pick, in recognition for their service to the community. Legends from across Major League Lacrosse’s twenty-year history took part in the event, colleges and universities championed their selected players and the fans showed their digital support throughout the evening.

Alexander Brown, MLL Commissioner:

We all must make sacrifices during this time, but we did not want to sacrifice the opportunity to celebrate our next generation of talented players. We launched the 2020 Draft by honoring heroes in each of our communities. We then selected 48 new incredible men to join our ranks. We were honored by the overwhelming support for the newest class of MLL athletes, for the Honorary Draft Picks and for the league. Executing the digital draft took an extraordinary effort by our clubs, league personnel, and our partners, and I am very proud of all their efforts. We are now looking forward to the 20th anniversary MLL season.”

Before the start of the 2020 MLL Collegiate Draft Presented by Cascade, seven Honorary Draft Picks were announced. The picks included a St. John’s lacrosse player, turned NYPD officer; a Broncos cheerleader who is a nurse on the front lines in Denver and a 16-year old lacrosse player who spends flight lessons flying PPE to rural hospitals. Local media joined MLL in rallying around each community’s Honorary Draft Pick. NBC News Denver, CBS Denver, the Denver Post and others joined MLL’s Denver Outlaws in celebrating the heroic efforts Gabriela Windey is making as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse at the University of Colorado Hospital. MLL is incredibly grateful to the healthcare workers, first responders, and countless others on the front lines in the battle against COVID-19. MLL humbly used their platform to shine a light on the heroes in each of their communities.

Lacrosse legends kicked off the draft with all-time greats like Casey Powell, Mark Millon, John Grant Jr., Brian Spallina and Brian Dougherty calling teams’ first selections. This surprise appearance of MLL legends rallied the fans at the opening the Draft. Organically, without any paid promotion or the support of bots, MLL generated 500k impressions from these six videos.

Powell (2x Offensive Player of the Year, ’14 league MVP) said, of the opportunity to call a selection:

I was excited MLL asked me to take part. I love being a fan now, watching the advancement the league is making for the players and the teams. I would like to welcome the men selected on Monday to the MLL family and wish them the best of luck this season.

The lacrosse community came out in full support for the drafted players, but nowhere was it more apparent than with the colleges and universities. Of the 48 men selected, there were 33 schools represented; 29 Division I, 1 Division II, and 3 Division III schools. With the most selections in the 2020 draft (5), Yale posted 15 tweets about the MLL draft across just their Twitter channel. Towson University, with 2 players selected, posted 17 MLL draft tweets across their account.

John Stark, Assistant Director, Athletic Media Relations for Towson University:

We saw a 58% increase in engagement per post with the MLL draft content. MLL was able to provide customized historical draft content and an easily accessible bank of all league logos and graphics to support our preparation. Through their consistent and timely information and support around the 2020 draft, we were well prepared to support Jon Mazza and Grant Maloof on draft day. We are now thrilled to congratulate both of them for signing their rookie contracts and wish them the best of luck in the 2020 season.”

Major League Lacrosse’s 20th anniversary Collegiate Draft Presented by Cascade brought together community heroes on the front lines of the COVID-19 fight, lacrosse legends, a national patchwork of university programs and the next generation of lacrosse stars. The support and excitement for Major League Lacrosse was apparent and MLL is thrilled to build off of this momentum heading into its 20th anniversary season.

Ryan Tucker Retires From The Bayhawks

Baltimore, MD – Ryan Tucker, coming off his fifth MLL season, three playoff appearances and
receiving the 2019 Corum Players Choice Award has announced his retirement.

“I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have been a part of the Bayhawks organization over the past three years,” said Tucker. “The attention to detail, care, and professionalism exhibited has confirmed  the Bayhawks truly are the best in the business. I will forever cherish the relationships forged between my teammates, coaches, and staff. I believe it is time for me to step away and begin a new chapter in my career. I will always look back on my time spent in Annapolis with a smile.”

Ryan Tucker got his start in Baltimore, playing for the Gilman Greyhounds. Upon graduation he was listed as the No. 10 recruit in the country and No. 2 incoming midfielder by Inside Lacrosse. At the University of Virginia Tucker was a Captain, USILA All-American and a Senior CLASS Award candidate. He was drafted fourth overall out of UVA in 2015 by the Boston Cannons. His rookie season he saw action in 6 games, garnering a total of 10 points for the Cannons. At the end of the 2015 MLL season Tucker was traded to the Blaze and then in 2017 he returned to his hometown to play for the Bayhawks.

In the past three seasons Tucker has played in a total of 27 games for the Bayhawks and scored 30 goals. The final two goals of Tucker’s career came in the 2019 MLL semifinals, in the Bayhawks one-point win over the Atlanta Blaze (14-13).

The evening before the 2019 MLL Championship, where the Bayhawks would earn their sixth title, Ryan Tucker was named the 2019 Corum Players Choice Award recipient. The award is given to the player who is considered to be “the best teammate in Major League Lacrosse” and is voted on by the players themselves. Tucker has had a profound impact on the players and the overall Bayhawks team.

“It has been a pleasure playing with Ryan. He is the ultimate teammate and truly cares about the team first,” said Bayhawks starting goaltender and captain, Brian Phipps. “His passion, energy and devotion to the team helped us get to our championship last year. He was an important part to our success. I have been fortunate to know him since his younger years when his dad coached me in high school. It’s awesome to share my years on the Bayhawks with him and even better to share a championship.”

“Tuck was arguably the most selfless teammate I’ve ever played with,” said standout rookie for the Bayhawks, Andrew Kew. “He constantly had a smile on his face and always made the people around him better. He also knows the most random trivia knowledge in all of lacrosse.”

Outside of MLL play, Ryan Tucker has built a career as a teacher and head coach at Norfolk Academy. Under Tucker, the Norfolk Bulldogs were undefeated in the 2020 season, before it was cut short due to Covid-19. There is no one to better compliment a young coach’s promise than previous Bayhawks Head Coach, Dave Cottle.

“Ryan Tucker is one of the finest young men and teammates that I have ever been around,” said Cottle. “Now he will move on to his next chapter of being a great coach and teacher.”

The Bayhawks and the Chesapeake region are grateful to Tucker for returning home for the final three years of his career. He has brought an incomparable spirit to the team that will be missed.

As we look towards the 2020 NCAA Collegiate Draft, set to place May 4, Head Coach Tom Mariano will surely be looking for individuals who can emulate Tucker’s dedication, selflessness and team-first mentality. We have very big shoes to fill, but we look forward to building our next generation of Bayhawks Champions.

MLL Announces Registration Portal for 2020 Collegiate Draft Presented by Cascade

BOSTON – Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced last week that they will hold the 2020 Collegiate Draft Presented by Cascade on May 4. Today MLL announced the establishment of the Collegiate Draft Registration Portal, so that 2020 NCAA seniors may have the opportunity to register their interest in being selected in the Collegiate Draft.

“Due to the ambiguity of status for players in the 2020 NCAA senior class, MLL has established a registration portal,” said Alexander Brown, Major League Lacrosse Commissioner. “The portal will allow players to register their intent to move on from NCAA play and inform MLL coaches which 2020 NCAA seniors are committed and available for the 2020 MLL season.”

MLL’s Collegiate Draft Registration Portal will provide an opportunity for players from all divisions of the NCAA to declare their intended interest to play in Major League Lacrosse. Coaches from all six MLL teams will have access to the portal and will be made aware of every registrant.

Selections in the 2020 Collegiate Draft Presented by Cascade will not be limited to those registered. MLL coaches may select from any player listed in the 2020 NCAA senior class. As announced by MLL previously, if a player should be drafted, and they choose to return to NCAA play, the team who drafted that player will retain their rights for one (1) year. For any 2020 NCAA senior who was not drafted, and does not intend to return to NCAA play, they may voluntarily register for the MLL Player Pool.

“Seniors registered in the Collegiate Draft Registration Portal will get the first look by coaches,” said Sean Quirk, Head Coach for the Boston Cannons. “Players who are serious about their interest and commitment to play in MLL this season can signal that to us, through registering.”

2020 NCAA seniors interested in entering the Collegiate Draft Registration Portal can do so HERE.

Coverage of the Collegiate Draft Presented by Cascade will be held during MLL Draft Primetime, starting at 8:00 pm EDT (6:00 pm MDT). The draft will be conducted remotely, via a teleconference. Results will be released on a rolling basis via the league’s and teams’ social media platforms

Boston Cannons, Sean Quirk Announce 2020 Coaching Staff

The Boston Cannons have hired Jim Nagle as their offensive coordinator for the 2020 season. Nagle comes to the Cannons from Connecticut College, where he is serving as its interim head coach for the Camels. John Klepacki is returning to the Cannons in his fifth year as their assistant coach.

QUINCY, Ma. – The Boston Cannons today announced the hiring of Jim Nagle as offensive coordinator. Nagle is the interim head coach at Connecticut College, where he started in 2020 after serving as head coach at Stony Brook for eight years.

“I am thrilled to join the classiest organization in professional lacrosse,” Nagle said. “I would like to thank Rob Hale, Ian Frenette and Sean Quirk for the opportunity to join the Boston Cannons as we do our best to bring a championship back to Boston. This year’s Cannons team has everything it takes to be a championship team. I could not be more excited about the championship quest.”

At Stony Brook, Nagle boasted a 68-61 record, including a birth in the NCAA tournament in his first season in 2012. Nagle led the Seawolves to the America East postseason in all eight years, including one America East championship, one America East finals appearance and six semifinal appearances. In 2012 and 2019, Nagle was honored as the America East Coach of the Year.

Cannons players Challen Rogers and Justin Pugal played for Nagle at Stony Brook. Rogers was named to the USILA All-American third team in 2016, earning an honorable mention in 2012.

“Coach Nagle has a long tenure of success as a college coach, as our offensive coordinator, he will lead a talented and hungry group to win the MLL championship,” Quirk said. “Coach Nagle understands what it takes to continue to develop players and put them in positions to be successful as a unit. We are looking forward to having Coach Nagle in Boston.”

Prior to Stony Brook, Nagle was the head coach at Colgate University for 10 seasons. He is the winningest coach in history for the Raiders, earning two Patriot League Coach of the Year honors in his tenure at Colgate.

In 1995, Nagle was hired as head coach at Oneonta State, going 65-39 in his first head-coaching role. Prior to Oneota State, Nagle was an assistant coach at Springfield College, where his 1994 squad won the NCAA Division II Championship.

In his 24-year coaching career, Nagle has earned 10 Coach of the Year honors.

Nagle attended Loyola College, where his team qualified for the NCAA Tournament in all four seasons. He was a part of the 1990 Greyhound team that played in the NCAA Championship game. Nagle earned a Bachelor of Science in business in 1992, earning a master’s degree in physical education from Springfield College in 1994.

Joining Nagle on Sean Quirk’s 2020 staff is a familiar face for the Cannons. John Klepacki is returning in 2020 for the fifth straight season, first joining Boston in 2016. In 2020, he will serve as an assistant coach and the team’s defensive coordinator.

“I am excited to be back for the 2020 with the Cannons,” Klepacki said. “Being able to work with Coach Quirk and implement a vision from five years ago and see that vision take roots last season is motivating. The Cannons organization is such a first-class program to be a part of. Working with these core players is a special way to spend the summer. I Can’t wait to go farther than last year.”

Klepacki boasts an impressive 239-103 career record at Western New England University, where his .699 win percentage ranks fifth among active NCAA Division III coaches.

“The continuity that Coach Klepacki has brought the past four seasons as the defensive coordinator is outstanding,” Quirk said. “He has been instrumental in building a cohesive defensive unit, while in 2019 the man down unit he led had the highest kill percentage in the league at 63.64 percent.”

MLL Suspends Start of 2020 Season

Today, Major League Lacrosse elected to suspend the start of the 2020 season, originally scheduled for May 30. This decision was made to safeguard the health of our players, fans and staff, as well as those within our MLL communities as a result of the global pandemic.

We have been vigilant in coordinating with the Center for Disease Control (CDC), as well as federal, state and local officials to determine the protocols that will allow us to begin our season in the safest manner possible. So as to ensure the well-being of all MLL communities, we will be guided by their recommendations.
While the current situation remains fluid, the MLL family has a history of working together for the greater good. At no time should this be more evident than now.

The league recognizes the hard work and sacrifice of our players as they have prepared for this season. In an effort to help shoulder this burden, MLL has developed a fund to assist players in the event that we are unable to conduct a season in 2020.

That said, we remain hopeful and look forward to taking the field as soon as practically possible for our 20th season. In the coming weeks, we will keep fans updated on decisions regarding plans for the 2020 season. We are grateful to all MLL communities for their support, and we extend our thoughts to those who have been impacted by the COVID-19 virus.

Denver Outlaws Name Ken Clausen as the Defensive Coordinator

Outlaws Team President, Matt Bocklet, announced today the hiring of Ken Clausen as the Defensive Coordinator for the Denver Outlaws, in the 2020 season.

Ken Clausen has been a leader in the game both on and off the field for more than a decade. Ken has a unique talent to see and engage players individually and an ability to get the best out of each of them. When playing in MLL he was a top defender, an ever-better teammate, and helped the Outlaws win our first Championship in 2014. Now we have the great benefit of having Ken’s game sense, knowledge and passion on our sidelines.

– Matt Bocklet, Outlaws Team President

Clausen was selected fifth overall in the 2010 draft by the Denver Outlaws. Clausen missed the 2011-2013 MLL seasons due to multiple knee injuries but returned to the Outlaws in 2014. In his career he saw action in thirty-two games across four seasons and scooped up 90 ground balls. Due to yet another knee injury, Clausen’s career ended in 2016.

Before turning pro, Clausen made a name for himself at the University of Virginia. Clausen recorded a ground ball in 68 of his 70 contests. In 2010 Clausen finished eighth in the nation in caused turnovers per game with a 2.06 average. Clausen was a four-time All-American, three-time first team All-American, and a Scholar All-American. A team captain his senior year, Clausen was the co-winner of the William C. Schmeisser Award annually given to the nation’s top defenseman. Along with Lizards midfielder Kevin Crowley, Clausen was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award (recognized as the preeminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States) in 2010.

Clausen coached locally for Wheatridge High School, from 2015 to 2017, and is currently a coach for Cherry Creek (with Team President, Matt Bocklet), overseeing the team’s defense. Under Clausen, Cherry Creek won the State Championship in 2019 and boasted the #1 ranked defense in Colorado.

Off the field, Clausen has stayed close to the game. He has worked with Warrior Sports for more than nine years, where he currently serves as the Lacrosse Sports Marketing Manager. He also has been a leader in

fundraising for cancer charities in the lacrosse community through Lacrosse Mustache Madness. Clausen co-founded Lacrosse Mustache Madness in 2009 and since its inception, this annual campaign has raised over $1,000,000 for the HEADstrong Foundation whose mission is to improve lives affected by cancer.

Clausen remarked:

I played the majority of my professional career with the Outlaws, and I am now thrilled to again be a part of the team. The Outlaws are one of the most successful professional lacrosse franchises because of the culture that has been built over the last fourteen years. I believe in the vision Matt has laid out and it is an honor to coach alongside a Hall-of-Famer like Coach Seaman. I love our staff and love our team. I am fired up for the start of the MLL season and the chance to work with the best defensive talent in the game.

Brian ‘Doc’ Dougherty Named Assistant For MLL’s Barrage Franchise

Philadelphia Barrage head coach, Spencer Ford, announced today the hiring of Brian ‘Doc’ Dougherty as an assistant coach, overseeing strategy on both sides of the ball this season for the revived MLL franchise.

“A Barrage team would be incomplete without Doc,” said Philadelphia Barrage head coach, Spencer Ford.

“When I played in the league in 2007, we lost the championship to the Barrage because of Doc. Beyond his legendary playing experience, he has coached youth through top Division 1 talent in Philadelphia, and now he will add coaching professionally in Philly to his already impressive resume. He understands the toughness we are building at the Barrage because he has personified it throughout his career. He is an all-time great and I am honored to have him on my staff.”

Brian ‘Doc’ Dougherty was drafted into Major League Lacrosse for the inaugural season in 2001. His career spanned 2001 to 2009, during which he won three MLL Championships. Dougherty was the starting goalie for the Philadelphia Barrage from 2004 to 2008. During that time he led the Barrage to two Championships (2006, 2007). To this day Dougherty holds a number of records in the league’s record books, including being fourth in all-time save percentage in a single season (playing six games or more) achieved in the Barrage’s 2006 Championship season. In the 2006 and 2007 seasons with the Barrage Dougherty was named MLL Goalie of the Year.

Brian Dougherty’s career started here in Philadelphia at The Episcopal Academy. He went on to play at the University of Maryland, where was a two-time First Team All-American and was also named the nation’s most outstanding tournament player when he led the Terps to the finals in 1995. Dougherty is a two-time recipient of the Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Award as the NCAA Goalie of the Year. His exceptional contribution and career with the Terps led to his induction into the University of Maryland Hall of Fame in 2008, a HOF class that also included lacrosse legend Kelly Amonte-Hiller.

After college he balanced his professional playing career between Major League Lacrosse, the NLL and Team USA. Dougherty won two Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Gold Medals as the goalie for Team USA at the 1998 and 2010 FIL World Championships.

Since playing, Dougherty has had a decorated coaching career. He has coached for Penn, Haverford College, Chestnut Hill College and now is the head coach at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.

“I am excited that the Barrage are back and that I will, again, get to be a part of the best lacrosse franchise in Major League Lacrosse history,” said Dougherty. “The memories I have playing with the Barrage and playing in front of hometown fans, are some of the best of my career. Getting to come back and lead the next generation of MLL talent in front of the next generation of Philly fans means the world. True to the spirit of Philly, Spencer and I want to build the toughest team in the league. The Barrage are Back and we are going to be better than ever!”

Come cheer on Coach Dougherty and the Barrage this season. The Barrage home schedule will open with the team facing the Chesapeake Bayhawks on June 6. Tickets will go on sale on Wednesday, March 11. Visit the Philadelphia Barrage’s website by clicking here.

2020 MLL Schedule Announced

Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced today the 2020 regular season schedule. This season each team will have five home games and five away games, facing each of their opponents twice. The season will be 12 weeks long, affording each team two bye weeks.

“We have been working extremely hard this offseason and we are thrilled to present the 2020 schedule,” said MLL Commissioner, Alexander Brown. “In each market fans will have the opportunity to watch their team compete against each team in the league. This schedule offers the perfect balance for fans to enjoy the best lacrosse has to offer and for our players to compete at the highest level.”

This year will also mark the 20th anniversary of the pro lacrosse league.

In the first week of the season, the Chesapeake Bayhawks will host the Denver Outlaws. This will be a rematch of the 2019 MLL Championship. The Outlaws fell to the Bayhawks in Denver in the Championship game last season, 10-9.

The first week of the season will also see the two most recently announced teams face one another. February 11, Major League Lacrosse announced the inception of the Connecticut Hammerheads, being led by its head coach, Bill Warder. Earlier this week Major League Lacrosse announced that the Philadelphia Barrage is back and will be led by Spencer Ford. We expect to see quite the battle when the Hammerheads and Barrage face off in their first game of the 2020 season.

On July 4 of this year, Major League Lacrosse will present two games. Fans in Annapolis can enjoy a Fourth of July celebration cheering on the Bayhawks as they host the New York Lizards. Out in Denver, fans from across the state of Colorado will venture to Mile High Stadium for the fifteenth year of the Mile High Fourth of July game. The Outlaws will matchup against the Philadelphia Barrage for what has become the number one destination in Colorado for Fourth of July celebrations. Thirty-thousand fans will enjoy an unbelievable night of lacrosse and fireworks.

The last week of the regular season will take place August 15, with all six teams competing. Two teams that have been a part of the league since its inception will face off when the Lizards host the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Also that weekend, the Boston Cannons host the Philadelphia Barrage and the Denver Outlaws host the Connecticut Hammerheads.

Cascade Renews Partnership With MLL

Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced today that Cascade, the leader in lacrosse headgear for the last 33 years, has renewed its partnership. Cascade will be the exclusive helmet partner for Major League Lacrosse’s twentieth anniversary season.

“Cascade has been a partner of Major League Lacrosse since its inception and we are thrilled to be growing that partnership this year,” said MLL’s Chief Revenue Officer, Mark Burdett. “Given our storied history, we are excited to be celebrating our twenty years of lacrosse with Cascade across our social channels. Our players have always been protected by the best with Cascade and we a proud to carry that tradition forward.”

In the twenty weeks leading up to MLL’s twentieth anniversary season, Major League Lacrosse has been diving into the archives and sharing highlights of the league’s history. Cascade is joining in the celebration of MLL’s twenty years by presenting all digital content shared. Twenty Years of MLL Powered by Cascade offers fans clips from MLL legends like Brian Reese, Mark Millon, Casey Powell, Brian Spallina, Brendan Mundorf and many others. Fans will be able to see posters, gear worn and read articles from MLL’s history.

“After twenty years of partnership, we are proud to continue our support for the league and every player participating in the MLL. A calculated balance between vision, comfort, and protection empowers players to perform at their full potential — a necessity for professional lacrosse,” said Patrick O’Toole, Director of Marketing for Cascade Maverik. “We’re excited to witness success this season on both sides of the field with elite talent from across the nation.”

Cascade strives to be on the leading edge of design and safety; they have and will always devote substantial resources to research and development. Cascade continually works with top-level scientists to fully understand the impacts associated with the sport of lacrosse and how to design equipment to help reduce the risk of injury. Cascade chooses to produce all of its products right in Liverpool, NY at the company headquarters. While more and more American companies are pursuing inexpensive production options overseas, Cascade produces its helmets and eyemasks in an environment where their design team can be certain that their vision is properly executed. It is more expensive to produce in the United States but to Cascade, there is no other option. When it comes to head and eye protection total control of the production process is a necessity.

Cascade has championed the growth of lacrosse across the country. Outside of their partnership with MLL they also partner with Penn State, Albany, Brown, Air Force Academy, Villanova, Georgetown, Michigan, Lafayette, Dartmouth, High Point, Jacksonville, Richmond and Rutgers. Cascade is also a partner of Fairfield University, the new home of MLL’s Connecticut Hammerheads. Cascade invests in MLL players, including 2019 MLL Champions and Chesapeake Bayhawks standouts Nick Mariano and CJ Costabile, Outlaws’ faceoff specialist Max Adler and Boston Cannons’ attackman Will Sands.

“It is great to see the renewed partnership between Cascade and Major League Lacrosse,” said Nick Mariano. “Cascade has been a loyal partner to me, and to the league. They make the best helmets in the game, and they always have. It’s been fun to watch the evolution of their helmets through the MLL archive content this offseason.”

Dave Cottle Steps Down From Bayhawks, Former Launch Coach Tom Mariano To Replace

Coach of the 2019 MLL Champions and longtime member of the Chesapeake Bayhawks organization, Coach Dave Cottle announced today that he will be passing the torch to the 2019 Bayhawks Assistant Coach, Tom Mariano.

“I want to thank Coach Cottle for his dedication and service over the past decade,” said Mark Burdett, President of the Chesapeake Bayhawks. “This seamless transition, welcoming Tom Mariano to take over as head coach, provides consistency in the locker room. As Tom brings a championship attitude to Annapolis, we are excited to welcome fans and partners back for another exciting season.”

When joining the Bayhawks organization in 2010 Cottle stated, “I’m here to do whatever is needed to help this organization, to help our local team get back to competing for the MLL championship.”

Since that time, Coach Cottle brought four (2010, 2012, 2013, 2019) MLL championship rings back to Annapolis. Cottle has served as the Bayhawks’ head coach from 2012-2015 and from 2018 to 2019. He accumulated a 49-37 regular-season record and a 6-1 record in the postseason. Cottle has coached many great athletes at the professional level, including all-stars like Michael Evans, Matt Abbott, Kyle Dixon, and Ben Rubeor; and generational talents like Lyle Thompson, Casey Powell, and John Grant Jr. Cottle has also served as the Bayhawks’ general manager.

Coach Dave Cottle has spent more than four-decades coaching lacrosse, having started as a graduate assistant coach at Salisbury, later coaching for the Severn School, Loyola, University of Maryland and the Chesapeake Bayhawks. He was an assistant coach for the United States team that won the 1994 World Championship. His illustrious career has landed him in the Baltimore Chapter of the Lacrosse Foundation’s Hall of Fame, Loyola-Maryland’s athletics Hall of Fame, Chesapeake Chapter of US Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) Hall of Fame.

The Bayhawks are extremely thankful for the dedication, leadership, and success that Coach Dave Cottle brought to the organization and to the Annapolis community.

“It has been a privilege to be part of the Bayhawks organization,” said Cottle. “I am grateful to the many players, fans and to the league for the dedication and support over the past ten years. I look forward to returning to Navy Marine Corps Stadium in 2020 as a fan, and watching Tom lead the Bayhawks to their seventh MLL Championship.”

Coach Tom Mariano will take over as the Bayhawks head coach, effective immediately. Coach Mariano has been with Major League Lacrosse since 2013. He has coached three teams in his tenure and has served as an assistant coach to Coach Cottle and the Bayhawks in 2016 and 2019. In 2017, while Head Coach for the Florida Launch, Mariano was named Coach of the Year after leading his team to their first-ever playoff berth. He now looks forward to leading the Bayhawks to a back-to-back championship in the Bayhawks’ and MLL’s twentieth anniversary season.

“I am extremely grateful and honored to be following in the footsteps of Dave Cottle,” said Bayhawks’ head coach, Tom Mariano. “The Bayhawks have an unwavering tradition of success, and I look forward to working with our guys to keep that tradition going in 2020. We are committed to being the best version of ourselves.”

Tom Mariano has coached lacrosse for twenty-six years. He currently serves as the Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach and Assistant Athletics Director at Pace University, in Pleasantville, NY. During his successful tenure at Pace, the Setters have posted a record of 57-35. Mariano led the Setters to their best season ever in 2017, concluding with the program’s first-ever berth into the NCAA Tournament and Mariano being named the Northeast-10 Conference Co-Coach of the Year. Before his time with Pace, Mariano served as head coach for Sacred Heart University and earned NEC Coach of the Year honors with the Pioneers in 2013. As a player, Mariano helped Nazareth College win an NCAA Division III National Championship.

Coach Mariano and the 2020 Chesapeake Bayhawks will take the field for the first time in their twentieth anniversary season, May 30th.

2019 MLL All-Star Game Assistant Coaches Announced

Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced today that Brian Reese will be the assistant coach for Team Ice and Paul Cantabene and Spencer Ford will be the assistant coaches for Team Fire in the 2019 MLL All-Star Game (view the helmets for the game that will be worn by Team Fire and Team Ice here), set for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at Navy Marine Corps. Memorial Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.

“We are honored to have Major League Lacrosse legends back on the sideline for the All-Star Game,” said MLL Commissioner, Alexander (Sandy) Brown. “Brian, Paul and Spencer have been cornerstones to the development of Major League Lacrosse and have remained leaders in the lacrosse community. I am sure each sideline will greatly benefit from their expertise this weekend.”

Paul Cantabene will be joining head coach, B.J. O’Hara and team captain, Rob Pannell, to help lead Team Fire in the 2019 MLL All-Star Game. Cantabene, originally from Rochester, New York, first moved to Maryland to play for Loyola University, where he graduated in 1993. Cantabene began his Major League Lacrosse career when he was drafted in the seventh round of the 2001 MLL Inaugural Draft by the Bayhawks. In six seasons with the Bayhawks and Philadelphia Barrage from 2001-06, he played in five championships, winning three in 2002, 2004 and 2005. In addition, he was a five-time All-Star, two-time All-MLL selection and recipient of the SoBe Iron Lizard award in 2002. Most recently Cantabene was an assistant coach for the Chesapeake Bayhawks under Coach Dave Cottle. Cantabene was inducted into the Rochester Chapter of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2003. In his illustrious coaching career, Cantabene has coached for The McDonogh School, Johns Hopkins, Towson University, the University of Maryland, the 2010 FIL World U.S. Men’s Lacrosse Team and currently is the head coach for Stevenson University.

“The MLL All-Star Game has always been the most fun game of the season for the players and for the fans,” said Cantabene. “I can’t wait to now take part as a coach; helping B.J., Spencer and Pannell lead the new generation of MLL stars like Currier, Woodall and Molloy.”

Spencer Ford will also be joining coach, B.J. O’Hara, and team captain, Rob Pannell to help lead Team Fire in the 2019 MLL All-Star Game. Ford is a product of the Maryland lacrosse tradition, a graduate of Towson High School and Towson University. He went on to become an attackman in the early seasons of Major League Lacrosse, playing for the Bayhawks, Rattlers, Lizards and Los Angeles Riptide during an eight-year career. He was named the league’s Most Improved Player in 2007, a season in which he set the single-season record for assists (a mark that still stands). After an injury ended his career in 2009, Ford moved to front office work, flourishing as the general manager of the Bayhawks from 2010-2016, including overseeing three MLL Championship campaigns. He then moved on to coach the expansion Atlanta Blaze in 2016, later becoming the team’s General Manager in 2017. Currently an assistant coach and GM for the Blaze, Ford also coaches for the Looney’s Lacrosse Club of Baltimore.

“I have been a part of MLL for more than a decade and I know how exciting and special the All-Star Game is,” said Ford. “I am looking forward being back on the field with Paul and Brian, as we share the excitement and love of the league and of the game with this next generation of All-Stars.”

Brian Reese will be joining coaches, Bill Warder, Tom Mariano and team captain, Lyle Thompson to help lead Team Ice in the 2019 MLL All-Star Game. Reese is a native to Maryland, having attended St. Paul’s School before attending the University of Maryland. Reese was a five-time All-Star selection in MLL for the Bayhawks and Philadelphia Barrage and helped lead the Bayhawks to a championship win in 2002. After retiring from playing, Reese was named the General Manager for the Denver Outlaws. During his six seasons with the Outlaws they qualified for the playoffs in each season and lead the league in attendance each year. Reese was also the Head Coach of the Outlaws for four seasons (’07-’11), winning the BRINE MLL Coach of the Year Award in 2009. In 2012 he joined the Chesapeake Bayhawks as both GM and Asst Coach. The Bayhawks went on to win the MLL Championship in 2012. Reese now coaches for the CSE RoughRiders and Glenelg Country School.

“I am thrilled to be coaching in the 2019 MLL All-Star Game,” said Reese. “Playing and coaching in Major League Lacrosse has been such a large part of my development and experience in the sport, and I am excited to be back on the sideline at Navy to coach players like Brendan Kavanagh, Zach Goodrich, Colin Heacock and Max Adler. I also am looking forward to being on the sideline while (John Grant) Junior is on the field, showing up all other MLL alumni.”

The Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game is a tradition of show-stopping plays and nonstop excitement. It will be played July 27th at Navy Marine Corps. Stadium, in Annapolis, MD. Don’t miss your chance to catch the action on ESPN2 or in person. Purchase tickets HERE.

MLL Championship Weekend To Be Held In Denver

Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced today that Denver, CO has been selected as the host city for the 2019 MLL Championship Weekend, October 4-6, 2019. Colorado is home to a rapidly growing lacrosse market, with US Lacrosse participation statistics showing over 115% growth in the last 10 years. This is the first time in MLL’s 19-year history its championship game will be played in Colorado.

The MLL Semifinals will be held on Friday, October 4th at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on the campus of the University of Denver. Faceoff for the first game will take place at 7:00 P.M. EDT/ 5:00 P.M. MDT with game two to follow at approximately 10:00 P.M. EDT/ 8:00 P.M. MDT. The MLL Championship Game is set for Sunday, October 6th at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO. Faceoff is at 1:00 P.M. EDT/ 11:00 A.M. MDT and the game will be televised live on ESPN2.

“We are thrilled to finally bring the 2019 MLL Championship to Denver. Colorado has been a rapidly growing lacrosse market for many years and home to one of the league’s signature franchises,” said Alexander Brown, Commissioner of Major League Lacrosse. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and the University of Denver to bring the most competitive weekend of professional lacrosse to Colorado.

Dick’s Sporting Goods Park is comprised of the state-of-the-art 18,000-seat home stadium of the Colorado Rapids (MLS) and its surrounding 24-field, fully-lit soccer complex. This continues the trend of holding the MLL Championship Game in a pre-determined neutral site location. Last season, the Denver Outlaws took home the Steinfeld Trophy after defeating the Dallas Rattlers in Charleston, SC. The Outlaws are looking for their fourth straight title game appearance.

“We are incredibly excited to host the Major League Lacrosse Championship game at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park,” said Jim Martin, President & CEO of Kroenke Sports & Entertainment.  “This is the first time in league history that this championship game will be held in the Centennial State and it should be a memorable event for lacrosse fans in Denver and throughout Colorado.”

For the first time since 2013, the MLL Semifinals and Championship Game will be held on the same weekend. The action starts on Friday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, which is home to the Denver Pioneers men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. The 2,000-seat facility was the first lacrosse-only stadium in NCAA Division 1.

“The University of Denver is proud to host the Major League Lacrosse Semifinals at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium,” Vice Chancellor for Athletics, Recreation and Ritchie Center Operations Karlton Creech said. “Our stadium provides a great atmosphere for the sport in the Lacrosse Capital of the West, and we look forward to having Denver Outlaws’ fans on our campus during the regular season, and now four semifinalists and their fans this October.”

With the expansion of the 2019 league schedule, this is the first time the MLL Championship game will be played during the month of October. Prior to this year, the latest date of an MLL Championship game was September 3, 2001 – MLL’s inaugural season.
