Why Lacrosse Players Should Be Multi-Sport Athletes

Most people believe that the key to great performance in one sport is specialization in that sport. Logically, it should make sense on paper-this is where you focus all of your time and energy; therefore, you will automatically get better at this particular sport. In real life, it is quite the opposite. In my position, I have spoken to literally hundreds of lacrosse players. I can’t even tell you how many have said they have stopped playing all the other sports and have focused on just one sport: lacrosse. As great as this may sound, like the plan to success, the risks and downsides of an athlete having only one sport in which he or she competes is MUCH greater than most parents realize.

Burnout is one of the more common issues associated with early specialization. When athletes are only specializing in one sport, especially at such a young age, their likelihood of burning out by high school is much greater. Lacrosse, like any sport, can lose its excitement when it’s the only thing you do day in and day out. What started as a passion often becomes a chore, and I’ve seen too many parents frustrated when their child suddenly loses interest in continuing with their sport after years of investment. Interestingly, the many high school athletes who switch to lacrosse after years of playing other sports like football or basketball often find themselves enthusiastic again, putting a new spark into their game since they seem particularly excited to try something different. People who have only ever known lacrosse miss this excitement sometimes simply because they have never taken the time to try another sport and re-ignite their passion.

One-sport specialization also cuts an athlete from their full potential. This may seem to be counterintuitive to one’s reasoning but the reality is that every different sport comes along with a unique skill set to an athlete that enhances his ability physically and mentally. The physicality is taught in football, while the dynamic movement is honed in basketball and endurance in soccer. With multiple sports, athletes develop a wide range of attributes physically, helping them in any athletic context. No, this doesn’t mean that a lacrosse-only player won’t develop these traits; being a well-rounded athlete who can apply the skills learned from different sports leads to fast and balanced development, especially at a young age. For example, a lacrosse player who has also played basketball and soccer may possess superior footwork, endurance, and agility compared with another individual who has experienced only lacrosse.

Beyond the physical factor, playing multiple sports brings forth a mental side that is just as important. An athlete who focuses their time and efforts on one sport over a period of time will develop a good understanding of the particular IQ of that sport. But in playing multiple sports, the perspective for the athlete expands, cultivating something that can be termed an “athletic IQ.” While there would be specific advantages to each sport, there’s a kind of universality among many: spacing, decision-making, winning one-on-one situations, and team chemistry. Playing multiple sports allows the kids to see the bigger picture and apply those principles inside and outside the game in general. The result is a more well-rounded player who can better adapt to the game in various situations. This kind of varied athletic development has been shown time and time again to be correlated with superior long-term outcomes for any multi-sport athlete.

Another positive aspect of being a multi-sport athlete is the varieties of teams, coaches, and playing environments one will be exposed to. Many athletes specializing in one sport will continue with the same coach or same club for much of their developmental years. While this might bring a certain amount of continuity, it is limiting. For an athlete to get better, they need to be uncomfortable and challenged to learn from different coaches and different teammates constantly. Understanding the different coaching styles and philosophies not only broadens an athlete’s knowledge but also aids in developing resilience. Even with the greatest coach in the world, other coaches offer their perspectives, which will further enhance your game. Moreover, being on different teams introduces them to new social dynamics. Being with the same teammates all one’s childhood can be fun, but there’s great value in learning to adjust with changing groups. Especially important is the ability to adapt to styles of play, personalities, and environments, since as athletes progress to higher levels, teams are in a state of constant flux. Those who have gone through various sports tend to become more flexible, adaptive, and resilient with the friction of team dynamics.

Last but not least, let’s not forget the fact that sports are for enjoyment! Playing a variety of sports keeps things fresh and exciting. It allows them to expand their skills, keep them interested, and avoid the monotony brought in by participation in only one sport. In this case, multi-sport athletes happen to be successful because they can be better mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared for the demands of competitive athletics, not just in competing in lacrosse but in every other aspect of their respective sports. More lacrosse players need to understand the value of being a multi-sport athlete.

Why Lacrosse Film Analysis is Important

For any developing lacrosse player, film analysis is a vital resource for elevating their game to the next level. Being able to watch yourself play is one of the best ways to understand both what you’re doing right and what you’re doing wrong. It’s especially helpful for identifying mistakes. Did you take a shot that your coach yelled at you about during the game? Go watch the film. Did you miss a back cut on a goal right at the doorstep? Go watch the film. Did you throw a clear to a defensive midfielder who got hit as soon as he caught it? Go watch the film. Mistakes are easier to spot when you can actually see them play out in real time, but where many players fail is in the analysis of that film.

In my experience, when athletes tell me they’re watching film, they’re often just reviewing their individual highlights. If they focus on their lowlights, they tend to think the issue will resolve itself now that they’ve seen what went wrong. While this approach makes sense on a surface level, true growth comes from the deeper analysis of the game. That’s where the real learning begins.

Lacrosse, at its core, is a game of advantages and reactions, like a series of falling dominoes. One action by the offense triggers a response from the defense, often creating advantages for the offense. As long as the offense capitalizes on those advantages, the dominoes keep falling, ideally leading to a goal. However, the problem with the way many athletes watch film is their tendency to just watch it without really studying it. When players make mistakes, they need to break down what advantages they had, whether the dominoes were falling in their favor, and how they either capitalized on or failed to make use of the opportunity.

In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to feel like you’re making the right play. But lacrosse film analysis gives you a new perspective, one that opens the door to a deeper understanding of the game. There must be a clear intention to truly study the film, not just review highlights and glaring lowlights. Players need to understand why things are happening the way they are. Doing drills and practicing will help with executing certain concepts, but mastering those concepts comes through analyzing film. That’s where true growth occurs.

Film doesn’t just provide the opportunity to see yourself on the field; it also lets you see what others are doing. Watching the game from a top-down, third-person perspective allows players to understand the game more holistically. It’s a completely different view from what you experience on the field. One of the biggest issues in lacrosse is spacing, and this third-person perspective clears that up. Without proper spacing, offenses can’t function, and defenses have no real opportunity to slide and make plays. Good coaches always preach spacing, but many players struggle to grasp its importance. Coaches often see the whole field and get frustrated when their players don’t understand certain concepts, but the reality is that players on the field have a very different view than their coach on the sideline. The only way to bridge that gap and work as a cohesive unit is through film study.

At the collegiate level, watching film is a given. Almost every team watches film in various ways. The best athletes are the ones who take time between classes or after practice to watch clips, whether of games or drills. But again, the key is deliberate intent. Anyone can sit down and watch their highlights, but the best students of the game can tell you why each action on the field is happening and how it fits into the larger picture.

Lacrosse film analysis is about more than just seeing your mistakes—it’s about understanding the game in a way that elevates every aspect of your play. The players who truly embrace this become not only better athletes but smarter ones, capable of reading the game in real-time because they’ve already analyzed it from every angle off the field.

Adrenaline All-American Lacrosse Experience: A Weekend to Remember

The Adrenaline All-American experience is a proud two-day event in Frisco, Texas, showcasing the best high school lacrosse players the country has to offer. This weekend creates a very unique experience for the athletes, something they will never forget in their transition from high school to collegiate lacrosse. We will go through all the many activities and moments that made this event so special for these Adrenaline All-Americans.

Saturday

Pre-Event

Almost all of the Adrenaline All-Americans and their families flew in the night prior. Since being named an All-American carries such an elite honor, players and their families came from all over the country to be at this event. Before any of the events could take place, these athletes were already treated to first-class treatment. Everybody stayed at the Omni Frisco Hotel, which is connected directly to The Star in Frisco. The Star is the practice facility for the Dallas Cowboys; virtually all indoors were allowed for the athletes to use during the event. In addition, The Star is connected to a walking strip filled with coffee shops, restaurants, and high-end retailers. A five-minute walk would get you just about anything you could want or need. The night prior, it was great to see all the athletes and their families all over The Star—running into several athletes Friday night allowed me to talk more in-depth with them about their game and, thus, their excitement for the weekend.

Boys and Girls Media Day

The weekend really began during media day on Saturday morning. The athletes turned up nice and early to get their first goodie bag of the weekend, including branded hats and Prime sports drinks, being the official sponsor for the event. This was the first time they saw their jerseys, and they immediately received their headshots. You could already tell how special this was when the athletes began conversating with one another, waiting for their headshots. This transitioned smoothly into the Q&A part of media day, with both the boys and girls going up with their position groups and fielding a bunch of questions about themselves and the event. Many athletes talked about how great it was to be an Adrenaline All-American and how this was their final send-off from being an athlete at the high school level before they would embark to their respected universities as freshmen in the fall. Media day was soon surrounded by laughs, smiles, and feelings of pride from the athletes for being a part of this.

Exploring Frisco

The athletes had a break during the middle part of the day. This was when they ventured into The Star to look around. Everywhere you looked, you would probably see a group of athletes wandering into different shops and eateries sightseeing. Many of these athletes either went to the same high schools or just simply knew each other because of national exposure. It was apparent that many of the athletes were meeting up with friends they had made online, and it was great seeing them hanging out together without doing anything in particular but enjoying all that Frisco offers.

All-American Banquet

The All-American Banquet is something else. The athletes and their families were all well-attired as if they were attending the Oscars. It wasn’t a polo and khaki occurrence, oh no, the boys were sporting pop-out suits and the gals were parading in their divinest apparel. You could already gauge long before the ceremony began just how elite of an occasion this was and how big of a privilege it was to be present there. The hall was gigantic, and prior to the start of the ceremony itself, everyone had ample opportunities to mix up with one another and have a high-class dinner together.

The evening would begin with a word from Alex Cade, who is the CEO of Adrenaline Lacrosse. Now, if you don’t know Alex, he started Adrenaline Lacrosse back in 2001 with his former teammate Steve Sepeta when he realized that the opportunities for western lacrosse farmers were lacking in comparison to what was available in the classic hotbeds. What was true then is still today—this is all about putting the lacrosse athlete fully in control of their lives by providing an access point to opportunities. The Adrenaline All-American weekend is a special opportunity for West Coast lacrosse, all coming from the root of the purpose of Adrenaline. This energy was felt in his opening remarks, which were followed by Notre Dame Head Coach Kevin Corrigan. Coach Corrigan gave a strong speech, talking about his own experience with the game and giving duly noted advice to the incoming college freshmen. You could almost physically feel the weight of Corrigan’s words as he spoke, and everyone in attendance fell silent. No one could inform the incoming freshmen better about how to succeed at the next level than the back-to-back NCAA Division 1 National Champion Head Coach.

Coach Corrigan was brought to the stage, being inducted into the Western Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Eddy Glazener. Glazener was a four-year standout at Notre Dame, where, upon graduation in 2016, he continued his career at the highest of levels in both the MLL and the PLL. Prior to college, Glazener played with the West Coast Starz club lacrosse program while being based out of California. Glazener hung up the cleats this past season and spoke to the athletes about how important it is to embrace the moment and always be ready for what’s next. The banquet ended with the introduction of athletes, one by one, which served as a final hurrah of the night.

Sunday

Boys and Girls Locker Room Reveal

Boys and girls arrived early at the facility to walk through the locker rooms before Sunday’s game. From top to bottom, the locker was filled with equipment. Items provided ranged from a game jersey, game shorts, game socks, a crewneck sweatshirt, sweatpants, shooting shirts, practice shirts, a polo, a backpack, practice shorts, a lacrosse head, and a lacrosse shaft, among other items specific to the boys and girls. It was—in professional terms—an unthinkable truckload of products for the athletes, who absolutely loved every minute of it. They all filed in, as a group, into the locker room to check out the gifts inside. A complete frenzy, much like Christmas morning. Phones were flashing as they started to try on their brand-new swag. This clearly is a highlight in the trip for some, as no other place around the country has high school athletes being dolled up like this.

Boys and Girls Practice

Each team had an individual practice time to try and get a little chemistry with their teammates. This is also a good time to get the bodies loose, as these athletes have traveled hundreds of miles to get here and certainly haven’t handled the sticks much over the last two days. Almost all the boys and the girls seemed really enthusiastic about getting to know their coaches and new teammates, and practicing really had a light-hearted, playful vibe to it. There was no good reason for all these future Division 1 athletes to put their bodies on the line in a light warm-up. Almost all the practice time was scrimmaging with small-sided drills and a lot of time to shoot. Coaches could place their few schemes and systems in, and the music was blaring, the athletes dancing, all fully expectant for what they had warmed up for in hours ahead.

Boys and Girls All-American Games

After a brief intermission, the girls returned to The Star and began getting ready for their game. The mood had changed to a level of competitiveness, though still jovial and playful. Of course, when all is said and done, these athletes are top-level competitors who are there to win. The opening was miraculous as they burst into the field after emerging through a smokey tunnel. Seconds followed a driving national anthem, and it was easy to tell right away why they were dubbed All-Americans. The athletes on the field were the best of the best, no questions asked. The North exploded out early with a 6-1 advantage. Most of these goals were off pure speed/determination, but not for a second was any of this selfish play. At the end of the first quarter, it really felt like the North was leading, using its dominant speed and ride to take a 12-5 lead at the midway point. That South fought hard to get back in the game with some flashy goals and a good competitive spirit, though it would be just too much by the end of the game when it was all said and done. The North walked away with a 20-12 victory.

The girls’ game was entertaining, but the boys took it to another level. The South took a 4-3 lead into the half, and it was a back-and-forth affair. It was evident the talent on the field understood all the core concepts of the game, as it was absolutely humming the ball, setting each other up for success. The offenses were clicking, yet the defenses really told the story of the game. If I didn’t even know what I was watching, I’d have thought these defensive units had been playing together all of their lives. They were just hungry and looking to cause chaos while having the support of teammates to do so. Both sides were sliding early with their backside help filling in properly like they had worked in tandem together their entire playing careers. The goalie play was outstanding; every keeper who stepped in between the pipes needed to make a wonderful save just to keep their team in it, and they did every time. The game was all square at 7-7 during the fourth, as now the North made a bit of a comeback. This would continue with a lead of 9-8 for the North in the final three minutes of the game. South really decided to step around the corner in the final seconds and take this win at 10-9—an absolutely sensational win from both sides for the competitive play.

After the Game

After the completion of that game, each team congratulated the other for completing this journey. Many athletes work hard to achieve the opportunity to play at the college level, and a slight few head off to compete at a Division 1 level, but only a few obtain the right to be considered an Adrenaline All-American. Many of these athletes made lifetime friends over the weekend, and this event was the final farewell for some and until the next time for others. Smiles and hugs were exchanged, and many grabbed the chance to take a few photos with each other. At the end of the day, the Adrenaline All-American experience outweighs anything else. The memories that happened this weekend clearly last a lifetime amongst players and parents alike.

SPIRE LACROSSE: DEVELOPING FUTURE ALL STARS ON & OFF THE FIELD

SPIRE Academy is proud to celebrate the lacrosse program’s extremely successful inaugural season, where the team made it to the MSLA C Bracket Championship game. This is a remarkable achievement, especially for a new team. Led by dedicated coaches and staff, SPIRE’s Lacrosse program effectively blends diverse talents while building a culture dedicated to excellence.

Lacrosse Head Coach JD Harkey recently shared some insights into the team’s progress so far. He emphasized the importance of mental fortitude, attitude and communication in developing elite student athletes. Working closely with Zac Bruback, Director of Mindset Development, Coach Harkey highlighted the significance of having a strong mental approach in order for the team to achieve physical success. He praised Assistant Coach Nakeie Montgomery for his detail-oriented coaching style and dedication to helping players excel on and off the field. “He is a tough coach [in his own right]. [We both] acknowledge that there’s no singular right way of doing something, but he will take the time to dissect the situation and explain why there may be a better way. He currently plays at a high level himself…I wanted somebody that our athletes can look towards as somebody that’s been in their shoes relatively recently.”

Assistant Coach Montgomery, a prominent figure in the lacrosse community, expressed his enthusiasm for being part of the SPIRE family. He told us, “I want us to be the best team in Ohio. No doubt we want to be the best program in the state, but we want to be able to compete nationally.” With a focus on player development and team cohesion, he aims to position the academy as a leading contender in Ohio and beyond. He also highlighted the important role that the school’s summer camps play in recruiting talented athletes and showcasing SPIRE’s phenomenal offerings, saying, “Our camps are great. If you come to our fields in the summer, you’ll see a bunch of the best coaches and just the best lacrosse players come out here for it.”

SPIRE is also privileged to have Kyle Harrison, a distinguished SPIRE ambassador and National Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee, involved in the program. Harrison’s extensive experience means that he brings a wealth of knowledge and inspiration to the team. Coach Harkey remarks, “He’s a mentor to me. He’s not somebody that I’m calling on weekly, but I’ve definitely brought him in and asked him for advice throughout the year. Advice for myself, advice for the team, etc. I wouldn’t even be here without him.”

In a recent interview, Coach Harkey elaborated on how SPIRE’s new lacrosse program is preparing student athletes for collegiate play. He emphasized the importance of skill development, teamwork and self discipline in shaping well-rounded athletes ready for the next level of competition. Harkey himself went from playing for the UMBC Retrievers to coaching at the University of South Carolina and eventually at SPIRE, showcasing his deep commitment to the sport and player development. “There’s a handful of things that we’ve done this year and I intended to do year over year. One is having an opponent that requires us to get on a plane and fly to them. There are small skills built into that, it’s not just fun trip with the team…you have to figure out as an individual how to handle your emotions while traveling, how to handle sleeping [on the road], nutrition – ‘Am I packing snacks for myself that are appropriate to prepare me to be an effective athlete?’, school work (being honest with yourself) – ‘I’m not super effective doing work on the road…I’m going to be more proactive about getting work done before we even leave.’…all those things are imperative as a college student athlete.” There is truth to the process, as senior Camden Moody made history as the first lacrosse player to commit to a university to play collegiately – he will be attending Limestone University to continue developing what he has learned at SPIRE.

Furthermore, SPIRE places a strong emphasis on cultural diversity, with Coach Harkey championing a diverse and inclusive environment. He highlighted the school’s commitment to fostering a multicultural perspective and providing student athletes with a global outlook on the sport and their place in the world. This dedication to diversity extends beyond the playing field and is focused on ensuring diversity within the coaching staff and the broader community at SPIRE. Harkey told us, “Our school as a whole is pretty diverse. I want to keep building on that. I was adamant about making sure that we had diversity in the coaching staff and diversity in the adult community for all the students to look up to.” The SPIRE Lacrosse program stands out for its commitment to diversity and multiculturalism, providing its student athletes with a global perspective on the sport and their place in the world. The coaching staff and the teachers at SPIRE all work hard to prepare these student athletes for college both athletically and academically.

As the team finishes up its outstanding inaugural season, it’s creating a supportive and competitive atmosphere where the athletes can work hard and reach their full potential. With a strong emphasis on teamwork, skill development and cultural awareness, SPIRE’s Lacrosse program is gearing up to leave an outstanding impression for years to come.

Blackjack Classic: An Elite Lacrosse Experience with Adrenaline

The world of lacrosse tournaments is vast and varied, but few events capture the level of competition, spirit, and sheer excitement like the Blackjack Classic. Hosted by Adrenaline, this tournament emerges as a beacon in youth and high school lacrosse out West. Set against the backdrop of the dazzling city of Las Vegas, the Blackjack Classic seamlessly merges elite regional competition with unmatched NCAA exposure. It’s not merely a typical high school sporting event; it’s an experience for players and families alike. Furthermore, Adrenaline’s detailed approach ensures that attendees aren’t just witnessing lacrosse but immersing themselves in an environment where every detail, from the games to the entertainment, resonates with excellence and excitement. I was lucky enough to experience this event firsthand, and my weekend in Las Vegas was filled with nothing but high-quality lacrosse and joyous memories. There are many reasons why this event stands out amongst the rest, but I have broken these reasons down into three categories.

The Competition

When you look deeper into the heart of the Blackjack Classic, you’ll find a pool of talent, ambition, and determination from every player involved. The freshman and sophomore divisions emerge as hotbeds of talent, with young players looking to showcase their skills for college scouts. These competing athletes are acutely aware of the eyes upon them, with Division 1, 2, and 3 college scouts prowling the sidelines, notebooks in hand. Their every move and play becomes a potential ticket to the collegiate lacrosse scene, which is what every player in attendance dreams about. It is exhilarating to watch such young and hopefully talent putting everything they have on the line. In my experience, you rarely get this level of passion and intensity at other tournaments. Yet, the competitive spirit doesn’t end with the underclassmen. Juniors and seniors, many already committed to esteemed college programs, bring an admirable level of intensity. The clubs themselves in attendance are true powerhouses of Western lacrosse, such as Impulse, ADVNC, RC Lacrosse Club, Blackhawk, Team 91, Seattle Stars, ELEV8, Westward, and Team Oregon, to name a few teams. Their presence highlights the tournament’s reputation as a gathering of Western lacrosse’s finest, willing to travel vast distances to be part of this high-quality event.

The Structure

Transitioning from the competition on the field to the event’s overall structure, one can’t help but marvel at Adrenaline’s thoughtful planning. Heritage Park, the chosen venue, encompasses everything you look for from an elite event. With 13 well-maintained fields close to one another, you can always walk a few feet and find yet another intriguing matchup. This is so convenient for everyone involved, as no one has to travel vast distances from game to game. The Vendor Village emerges as a hub of activity, showcasing everything from Adrenaline’s iconic merchandise to numerous vendors showcasing their lacrosse gear, ensuring players leave with quality merchandise and cementing their attendance that weekend. When it came to food, I certainly was never going to go hungry. A healthy number of food trucks line the venue, offering a quick meal between the excitement of games. Officiating, often a point of contention in sporting events, shines at the Blackjack Classic. Armed with expertise and a sense of humor, officials understood the intensity of the games while keeping things light. The officiating never became a point of contention in the dozen games I witnessed over the weekend. Adrenaline did an incredible job ensuring that schedules remained tight, with every game holding significance, which is rare at a tournament of this scale.

The Experience

Beyond the event itself at Heritage Park, Las Vegas laid next door, adding another layer to the Blackjack Classic experience. Families and players enter the city, exploring its attractions, from the iconic Strip to hidden gems. Following a tough day of competition, these excursions forge memories that transcend the sport. It’s a testament to Adrenaline’s vision: crafting an event where competition meets memories, where passion meets pleasure. Reflecting on the Blackjack Classic, one can’t help but appreciate its multifaceted appeal. For players, it’s a stage; for families, it’s a journey; and for fans, it’s a spectacle. The Blackjack Classic isn’t just another lacrosse tournament; it’s a celebration, a testament to the sport’s enduring spirit, and a beacon for future generations of lacrosse enthusiasts.

The Blackjack Classic features everything you could want from a high-level event, from its competitive landscape to its meticulous organization and overarching experience. One thing becomes clear: Adrenaline’s flagship event is more than a tournament. It’s a legacy, a tradition, and a testament to lacrosse’s vibrant community and spirit.

Rising West: Justin Anderson’s Path to the PLL

In the heart of the dazzling city of Las Vegas, amidst the neon lights and endless entertainment options, a different kind of story unfolded—the journey of Justin Anderson, a 2x PLL All-Star whose roots in the sport took hold in this non-traditional lacrosse hotbed. From the growing landscape of lacrosse in Las Vegas to the professional stage, Anderson’s tale is one of determination, passion, and the unwavering support of his lacrosse community. As the youngest of six boys, Justin was introduced to lacrosse at an early age, inspired by the sight of his older brothers playing the game. While baseball held a special place in the Anderson household, Justin’s father played a pivotal role in kickstarting lacrosse in Las Vegas. This effort led to the establishment of the first high school lacrosse programs at Palo Verde and Centennial, marking the initial steps in the growth of lacrosse in a city better known for its entertainment offerings than its athletic pursuits.

Everyone knew everyone in the closely-knit Las Vegas lacrosse community—a fact that played a crucial role in Justin’s journey. His father, a constant source of support, was instrumental in Justin’s initial years with the sport. Despite the financial burden that comes with committing yourself to the sport of lacrosse, Justin found himself surrounded by a community that rallied behind him. Local clubs, such as the Vegas Starz, provided the support needed to propel Justin on the field. His success with the Vegas Starz would bring him to Adrenaline’s West Coast Starz, where his life truly changed. The West Coast-based company Adrenaline would play a pivotal role in Anderson’s pursuit of playing collegiate lacrosse. Adrenaline became more than a brand—offering elite opportunities, access to top club teams, and participation in prestigious events. Adrenaline’s role in Justin’s lacrosse journey extends beyond events and tournaments. The West Coast Starz opened the door for Justin to see what next-level lacrosse looked like while allowing him to play with some of the best players and coaches in the country.

Reflecting on his early years, Justin acknowledges the initial skill disparity between lacrosse players from Las Vegas and their East Coast counterparts. While East Coast players were known for their polished techniques, Justin’s athleticism and relentless spirit set him apart. His heart took center stage, as a level of dedication to his game was rare for kids from his background. As he continued to develop with the West Coast Starz, his talents were recognized by numerous college coaches on the East Coast. Without Adrenaline or the West Coast Starz, Justin may have never accomplished his goal of playing lacrosse at the Division 1 level. After his commitment to the University of North Carolina (UNC) under Coach Joe Breschi, Justin felt extremely grateful to have made it this far. However, the transition to college brought a stark realization—his high school methods wouldn’t suffice at the collegiate level. The intensity demanded adaptation, pushing Justin to shed the rust that had accumulated during a two-year mission trip break before college. Improving his game without the ball in his stick became a focal point, and Justin embraced the challenge, quickly becoming one of the best players in the ACC.

While playing high-level college lacrosse was a personal goal, the idea of going professional wasn’t initially on Justin’s radar. Despite this, his love for the game persisted, and his dedication paid off when Chrome Lacrosse Club selected him in the third round of the 2021 PLL Collegiate Draft. The transition to the professional level marked a new chapter in Justin’s lacrosse journey after following a non-traditional route to get to this point. What sets Justin’s journey apart? What turned a player from a non-traditional lacrosse hotbed into a 2x PLL All-Star? For Justin, the answer lies in unwavering dedication.

“I truly believe that lacrosse is one of those sports that if you work at it all the time and put in the effort, there will be opportunities for you. It may not be at the highest level, but it could be at any other level. I think there is always a spot for kids if they continue to pursue the sport, but it doesn’t just happen. You don’t get to play high-level college lacrosse just by picking up a stick once a week or by just going to practice. It doesn’t work like that. Regardless of whether your high school or youth team practices every single day, if you aren’t doing wallball or going on runs with your lacrosse stick or shooting, it’s not going to happen, but it can happen if you do those things every day. If you are constantly working on your game.”

Justin Anderson’s journey is more than just a personal success story—it’s a testament to the transformative power of dedication, community support, and the crucial role played by organizations like Adrenaline in shaping the future of lacrosse in non-traditional regions. Aspiring players in similar non-traditional hotbeds can draw inspiration from Justin’s journey, realizing that they can elevate their game to the next level with passion and hard work. In a sport that is still finding its roots in the West, Justin’s legacy showcases the impact of those willing to break boundaries, redefine expectations, and pave the way for future generations of lacrosse enthusiasts in non-traditional areas.

The Importance of Time Outs

Lacrosse is a game of runs. Momentum can swiftly shift, and strategic decisions play a pivotal role. Timeouts stand as a crucial tool in a coach’s arsenal. This explores the significance of timeouts in the game. This will dive into their strategic utility and provide insights into when coaches should strategically deploy them to maximize their impact on the game.

Strategic Reset and Refocus:

One of the primary purposes of timeouts in lacrosse is to provide teams with an opportunity to reset and refocus strategically. Whether facing defensive challenges, offensive stagnation, or a need to make crucial adjustments, timeouts allow coaches to gather their players, convey strategic insights, and instill a renewed sense of focus and purpose on the field.

Momentum Control:

Lacrosse is a game of momentum, and timeouts serve as a strategic tool for momentum control. When the opposing team is on a scoring run or gaining momentum, a well-timed timeout can disrupt their rhythm, allowing the coach to make tactical adjustments, regroup the team, and curtail the opponent’s momentum.

Game Management and Clock Control:

Timeouts in lacrosse play a vital role in game management and clock control. In situations where clock management is crucial, such as in the final minutes of a close game, timeouts allow coaches to orchestrate specific plays, manage substitutions, and ensure optimal clock utilization for strategic advantages.

Set Plays and Special Situations:

Coaches often use timeouts to draw up set plays for specific situations, such as man-up or man-down scenarios, extra attacker situations, or critical offensive and defensive plays. The pause in the game provides an opportunity for coaches to communicate and strategize, ensuring that players execute the designated plays effectively.

Injury Assessment and Player Rest:

In the event of player injuries or instances requiring medical attention, timeouts offer a designated period for coaches and medical staff to assess and address player well-being. Additionally, timeouts provide players with a brief break. This allows them to recover physically and mentally during intense or extended periods of play. These will also not count against your allotted amount of timeouts.

Strategic Adjustments and Opposition Analysis:

Coaches use timeouts strategically to make real-time adjustments based on their analysis of the opposition’s strategies. Analyzing the opponent’s tactics during gameplay can be challenging. Timeouts provide coaches with a valuable opportunity to assess and respond to emerging patterns or unexpected challenges.

Enhancing Player Communication:

Timeouts serve as a platform for effective communication between coaches and players. Coaches can relay insights, motivational messages, and strategic instructions. This fosters a cohesive team dynamic and ensures that players are aligned with the game plan.

Timeouts are multifaceted and invaluable resource for coaches. The strategic deployment of timeouts can sway the course of a game. It offers teams the opportunity to reset, refocus, and recalibrate their approach. Whether controlling momentum, managing the clock, or making crucial adjustments, timeouts are a tactical tool. It empowers coaches to navigate the unpredictable and dynamic nature of lacrosse. It ensures teams are well-prepared and strategically aligned for success on the field.

How To Shoot Your Shot

Lacrosse, known for its speed, agility, and finesse, hinges significantly on the shooting techniques of its players. The term is used throughout all sports, “Shooters Gotta Shoot!” Effective shooting mechanics are a culmination of intricate movements and coordinated actions, involving the sequencing of the body, precise hand positioning, and proficient stick manipulation. This article looks at the biomechanical intricacies and key components of proper shooting mechanics in lacrosse.

Foot Position and Body Alignment

  • The initial phase of the shooting motion involves proper foot positioning and body alignment. The shooter establishes a strong base by positioning the lead foot toward the intended target, with the body perpendicular to the target to facilitate a powerful and accurate shot.

Grip and Hand Placement

  • Optimal stick grip is critical in lacrosse shooting mechanics. The hands should be spaced apart on the stick, maintaining a firm but flexible grip. The bottom hand primarily guides the stick’s movement, while the top hand offers stability and control during the shooting motion.

Wind-Up and Loading Phase

  • The wind-up phase involves loading the stick while initiating the shooting sequence. The stick is drawn backward, maximizing the potential energy stored in the stick shaft and the player’s body for a more forceful release.

Transfer of Energy and Kinetic Chain

  • Efficient shooting mechanics involve the transfer of energy generated from the legs and core muscles through a kinetic chain. The legs and hips initiate the movement, transferring force through the torso to the arms and finally to the stick head, culminating in the release of the ball.

Wrist Snap and Follow-Through

  • The wrist snap is a crucial component in lacrosse shooting, accentuating the accuracy and speed of the shot. An effective snap of the wrists during the release imparts additional velocity and spin to the ball. A proper follow-through involves a smooth extension of the arms, maintaining accuracy and control.

Proper Ball Placement and Targeting

  • The placement of the ball on the pocket mesh directly affects the accuracy and velocity of the shot. Positioning the ball slightly above the shooting shoulder provides an optimal angle for release. Targeting involves aligning the shooter’s gaze with the intended target before releasing the shot.

Practice and Skill Development

  • Mastery of proper shooting mechanics requires repetitive practice and skill development. Players must continually refine their techniques, incorporating feedback and adjusting mechanics to improve consistency and accuracy.

Effective lacrosse shooting mechanics encompass a harmonious interplay of body positioning, hand placement, transfer of energy, and precision targeting. By understanding and refining these biomechanical principles, players can develop an efficient and potent shooting technique, crucial for success in the dynamic and competitive realm of lacrosse. Continued analysis and enhancement of shooting mechanics remain imperative for the sport’s evolution and player performance.

Recruiting Tips and Tools

The recruiting process for many people is often uncharted territory. For some they are seasoned pros, while others are navigating it for the first time. It can be intimidating, but it shouldn’t paralyze players and parents. You are the consumer and as a customer you are trying to find the best fit. For youth lacrosse players aspiring to play at the collegiate level, there are many important tips to keep in mind to enhance their chances of getting recruited. Here are some recruiting tips and tools to consider:

Recruiting Tips and Tools

  1. Skill Development and Training:
    • Continue to develop your fundamental lacrosse skills such as stick handling, shooting, passing, ground balls, and defensive techniques. Work with coaches, attend clinics, and engage in individual training to continuously improve your skills. YOU’RE NEVER A FINISHED PRODUCT!
    • Develop a strong lacrosse IQ by studying the game, watching high-level games, and analyzing different strategies and plays. Understanding the game at a deeper level will make you a more effective player. Ask lots of questions.
  2. Strength and Conditioning:
    • Continue to work on your overall physical fitness and conditioning to enhance your performance on the field. Build strength, speed, agility, and endurance through regular workouts and training sessions.
  3. Participate in Showcases and Camps:
    • Attend lacrosse showcases, camps, and tournaments where college coaches are likely to be in attendance. These events provide valuable exposure and opportunities to showcase your skills.
    • Research and identify showcases and camps that attract college coaches from the programs you are interested in. Take advantage of the chance to interact with coaches, receive feedback, and make connections.
  4. Create a Highlight Reel:
    • Compile a well-edited highlight reel showcasing your best skills, game footage, and notable performances. Include a variety of plays that highlight your strengths and versatility as a player.
    • Make sure your highlight reel is easily accessible and shareable through online platforms like YouTube or Vimeo. Share it with college coaches and include it in your communication with them.
  5. Academic Performance:
    • Maintain strong academic performance throughout your high school years. Good grades and a solid academic record are important for gaining admission to college and attracting interest from coaches.
    • Research the academic requirements and standards of the colleges you are interested in to ensure your academic profile aligns with their expectations.
  6. Attend College Prospect Days:
    • Many colleges offer prospect days or clinics specifically designed for prospective student-athletes. These events provide an opportunity to visit the campus, interact with the coaching staff, and showcase your skills in a college environment.
    • Research and register for prospect days at colleges you are interested in to get a firsthand experience of the program and demonstrate your abilities to the coaching staff.
  7. Seek Guidance and Support:
    • Seek guidance from your high school coach, club coaches, and mentors who have experience with the college recruiting process. They can provide valuable insights, advice, and connections to college coaches.
    • Engage in open communication with your coaches and express your aspirations to play at the collegiate level. They can provide recommendations, references, and guidance throughout the recruiting process.
  8. Be Proactive and Network:
    • Take an active role in your recruitment process by reaching out to college coaches, expressing your interest in their program, and sharing your athletic and academic profile.
    • Attend college lacrosse games and interact with coaches if possible. Send personalized emails or letters of interest to coaches, expressing your enthusiasm for their program and sharing relevant information about your lacrosse experience and achievements.
  9. Balance and Perspective:
    • Maintain a healthy balance between lacrosse and other aspects of your life, including academics, family, and personal interests. College coaches often value well-rounded individuals who can manage their time effectively.
    • Keep in mind that the recruiting process can be competitive and challenging. Stay positive, focused, and determined, understanding that the right opportunity will come with hard work and persistence.
  10. People. Places, and Things:
    • Social Media can help or hinder your recruitment. Use it as a tool to build, not to break down. Be Smart with what you post. If you wouldn’t say it or show it to your mom or coaches face you probably shouldn’t post it.
    • Everyone is watching. Treat people and situations as if there is a camera on you because often there is. Colleges check social media.
    • Surround yourself with good people, go to good places, and do good things and you will have no issues.

Remember, the recruiting process can be complex and vary for everyone. We all want to be the Number 1 recruit going to Syracuse or Duke, but that reality isn’t for everyone. Don’t be afraid to reach but know your limits academically and athletically. Stay dedicated and work on improving your skills. Actively engage with college coaches to increase your chances of being recruited. This is YOUR process. Ask lots of questions. Don’t be timid. This is your future, and you have a right to know.

Adrenaline Lacrosse Boys’ All-American 2023 High School Game Recap

In a high-octane clash at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, the boys’ 2023 Adrenaline All-American game delivered an exhilarating display of talent, teamwork, and sheer enthusiasm. The North and South teams took center stage as the sun dipped below the horizon, showcasing the best college-bound boys’ lacrosse players in the West. The stage was set for a riveting showdown.

From the jump, it was evident that this game would be anything but ordinary. Both teams carried a high energy and camaraderie you usually don’t see at such events. Many of these boys knew each other personally; that connection was evident on and off the field. Whether during the pregame warm-ups or in the hotel lobby, these boys were thrilled to be playing at such a high-level event with their best friends.

The North team set the tone early in the first quarter, displaying their offensive prowess and team chemistry. Caio Stephens (High Point) kicked off the match, scoring the game’s first goal. The North bench exploded as everyone sprinted towards Stephens, where he then led them back to the locker room, a celebration that will undoubtedly be remembered.
The North quickly jumped out to a dominant 6-1 lead by the end of the first quarter, and everyone thought that the South might be on the receiving end of a one-sided affair. However, the South players were able to rally the troops and show why lacrosse is considered a game of runs.

The second quarter witnessed a spirited resurgence from the South as they fought back valiantly, narrowing the deficit to 8-4 by halftime. Krammer was the standout player for the South, bagging two goals and showcasing his remarkable skill. If the South could continue on this path, they might be able to even up the game headed into the third.

However, the North had no intentions of letting victory slip through their fingers. They answered back with six unanswered goals during the second half in a dazzling display of both offense and defense. While it’s very easy to look at the North’s impressive offense, their defense really won this game. They played with a level of aggression that not many teams are used to seeing. They constantly pressured the ball carrier toward the sidelines while locking off their d-middle matchups, leaving the ball carrier nowhere to pass the rock. This level of pressure completely overtook the South offense, and they could never succeed in the second half.

As the final whistle blew, the North celebrated a well-deserved 13-7 victory. Georgetown’s commit and game MVP, Anderson Moore, proved himself as the game-changer. His main highlight of the night came after making a crucial save, where Moore then dashed out of the cage and embarked on a breathtaking sprint down the field. A well-timed pass from Jack Kiefer (Duke) found Moore in stride, allowing him to unleash a ferocious shot from deep, a moment every goalie dreams of. The celebration that followed was nothing short of electric, with Moore riding his stick like a triumphant warrior.

The boys’ 2023 Adrenaline All-American game was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of the sport and a memorable send-off for the high school lacrosse stars as they set their sights on the next chapter in their careers. As the Adrenaline Lacrosse All-American weekend concluded, there was a sense of excitement and anticipation for what these young athletes would accomplish at the next level.

JD Harkey Coach Spotlight: SPIRE

JD Harkey, a highly respected figure in the world of lacrosse, has carved a remarkable path as a coach, driven by a deep-rooted passion for the sport. From his humble beginnings as a player to his current position at SPIRE, Harkey’s journey has been marked by many influential figures and transformative experiences. His unwavering dedication and commitment to excellence have earned him recognition and success throughout his coaching career. In this article, we delve into the remarkable story of JD Harkey, exploring the key moments, mentors, and pivotal decisions that have shaped his coaching philosophy and propelled him to the forefront of lacrosse coaching.

His coaching journey truly began during high school when he started coaching youth lacrosse clinics, showcasing his passion for the sport even while he was still a player. Harkey’s dedication and talent soon caught the attention of Joe Trigiani, who offered him his first official coaching job for the travel program at Blackwolf Lacrosse. Trigiani, the founder of Blackwolf Lacrosse, played a pivotal role in JD’s early coaching career. Harkey’s time with Blackwolf Lacrosse marked the beginning of JD’s coaching journey and solidified his passion for coaching lacrosse.

Harkey had a successful career as a midfielder for the UMBC Retrievers from 2007 to 2011. UMBC Head Coach Don Zimmerman holds a special place in JD’s coaching journey. Under Zimmerman’s mentorship, JD earned a bachelor’s degree in lacrosse and a master’s degree in life. Zimmerman’s impact extended beyond the field, as he organized a team trip to Japan in 2009. This experience left a profound imprint on JD’s personal development, fostering a strong commitment to building international relationships and growing the game of lacrosse to benefit all communities involved. Zimmerman’s coaching style and mentorship significantly influenced JD’s coaching philosophy and approach.

After completing his playing career and undergraduate studies at UMBC, Harkey faced a pivotal decision. Pat Tracy, a former UMBC player and assistant coach at High Point University, extended an opportunity for Harkey to join him and Coach Torpey in launching the High Point lacrosse program. However, Harkey chose a different path and decided to pursue a law degree at the University of South Carolina. This hiatus from the lacrosse scene, spanning from the summer of 2011 to the summer of 2014, allowed Harkey to focus on his studies and gain a newfound appreciation for the game and the camaraderie it fostered.

In the fall of 2014, Harkey took on the defensive coordinator role for the University of South Carolina lacrosse program while practicing law in Columbia. Collaborating with Ken Lester, a former two-sport athlete at USC, Harkey showcased his coaching prowess and further honed his coaching methodology.

By the fall of 2015, Harkey’s dedication and expertise led him to assume the position of head coach for the USC lacrosse team, a role he held until the summer of 2021. Under his guidance, the team achieved remarkable success, amassing an impressive 75-18 overall record. Harkey’s tenure as head coach at USC was marked by numerous accolades, showcasing his ability to cultivate a winning culture and develop players to their full potential.

Driven by an unwavering passion for coaching, Harkey sought to transition from the practice of law to a full-time coaching role. Harkey embarked on a journey that involved interviews with multiple college programs. However, an enticing opportunity presented itself when he was offered a coaching position at Gerstell Academy (MIAA B), where he served as head coach for one year before the opportunity at SPIRE emerged.

Harkey’s coaching journey has been marked by the influence of several prominent figures whose impact on his coaching techniques cannot be overlooked. While some of these individuals have already been mentioned in this article, there are a few notable figures who deserve special recognition for their contributions.

Bud Harkey, JD’s grandfather, had a notable career in football at Wichita State, where he played alongside the legendary Bill Parcells. Despite having the chance to pursue coaching after college, Bud’s responsibilities as a husband and father prevented him from seizing that opportunity. This realization serves as a constant reminder for JD of the valuable chances he has been given and the sacrifices made by others to make those opportunities possible. Bud exemplified resilience and determination by working two different night jobs while balancing football and education to support his young family.

Jay Harkey, JD’s father, made significant contributions to the growth of Loudoun Youth Lacrosse during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Under his guidance, the program expanded from 150 participants to an impressive 2000 kids. Additionally, Jay coached the women’s lacrosse team at Loudoun Valley High School, leading them to three Virginia state semifinals. His involvement extended beyond coaching, as he co-ran the Upper Corner Lacrosse camp alongside Tommy Worstell and Kevin Pehlke. Jay’s dedication to the sport and his impact on young athletes serve as a source of inspiration for JD, especially considering that his three younger sisters all played college lacrosse.

Bob Curcio, JD’s father’s coach at Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ, established a highly successful lacrosse program. Renowned for his exceptional interpersonal skills, Curcio has been a consistent role model throughout JD’s life. Curcio’s influence has been instrumental in teaching JD the significance of fostering and maintaining meaningful relationships, a trait that JD carries with him in his coaching career. With his wealth of experience and a track record of success, JD Harkey serves as the Director and Head Coach of Lacrosse at SPIRE. This new chapter in his coaching career promises to be another stepping stone in his coaching journey. He continues to shape young athletes into skilled lacrosse players while instilling values of teamwork, perseverance, and a love for the game.

The stakes are set for the MIAA Lacrosse Championships taking place tonight at Loyola’s Ridley Athletics Complex. This article summarizes an insightful and thought-provoking conversation between two of Maryland’s most renowned lacrosse experts: Don Zimmerman and Bob Shriver. Shriver, who retired from coaching in 2015 after a storied 36-year career at Boys’ Latin, boasts an impressive record of 507 wins and only 140 defeats. Zimmerman, a National Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee in 2017, served as the head coach for the UMBC Retrievers at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County for 24 years. With their combined expertise and experience, few minds are better suited to offer valuable insights and analysis on everything MIAA Lacrosse. Let’s take a look at the matchups for tonight’s MIAA Lacrosse Championships.

B-Conference Championship

Archbishop Curley vs Park School

Time: 5:00pm

Tickets: HERE

Archbishop Curley

The Archbishop Curley Friars are currently enjoying an impressive win streak, remaining undefeated since their last loss on April 12th. With a record of 9-7, the Friars have maintained a flawless performance in the MIAA B-Conference. Head Coach Chris Ogle boasts an extensive coaching tenure of 19 years, including ten years as the head coach. Under his guidance, the team has secured four MIAA B-Conference Championships in 2007, 2008, 2019, and 2022. Notably, the Friars adopt a strategic approach when it comes to player utilization, prioritizing the involvement of their versatile two-sport athletes. At Archbishop Curley, ten Friars actively participate in dual-sport endeavors, engaging in disciplines such as football, hockey, soccer, and even volleyball. Trey Magnaye, a prominent first-line midfielder committed to Bridgewater for soccer, exemplifies the impact these multi-talented athletes bring to the field. Another notable player to keep an eye on is James Zingo, a junior already committed to playing at Saint Joseph’s. Zingo’s exceptional performance throughout the season has made him an invaluable asset to the team’s offensive capabilities, with his potential for further growth and development yet to be fully realized. Eager to secure back-to-back titles, an unprecedented feat in the MIAA, the Friars approach each game with unwavering determination. Employing an up-tempo offensive strategy, they skillfully keep opposing defenses on their toes. However, Coach Ogle attributes the team’s greatest strength to their formidable defense, which thrives on maintaining a strong defensive structure, applying relentless pressure, and tactically challenging opponents. Notably, the decision to utilize two-way midfielders aligns with the team’s composition of dual-sport athletes, ensuring a balanced and effective gameplay approach.

Park School

Park School has emerged as a formidable presence throughout the MIAA B-Conference, capturing attention and commanding respect throughout the season. The team exudes a newfound level of confidence that has been absent for quite some time. Guiding this remarkable journey is Head Coach Josh Lauren, an esteemed alumnus of Park School’s Class of 2003, whose deep-rooted connection to the program fuels his leadership. Under Coach Lauren’s tutelage, the squad has experienced a phenomenal year, boasting an impressive 13-2 record. However, the Bruins encountered a humbling setback when they were decisively defeated by Archbishop Curley a few weeks ago, the only stain on their otherwise impeccable B-Conference performance. This defeat served as a much-needed wake-up call, as it came after a prolonged period of success that may have bred a sense of complacency within the team. Nonetheless, the past remains in the rearview mirror as Park School now finds itself in the MIAA Lacrosse B-Conference Championship for the first time since 2006, igniting a fervent desire to seize the moment. In parallel to Archbishop Curley, the Bruins possess a cohort of dual-sport athletes, with soccer players predominantly comprising this group. While each of these multi-talented individuals contributes significantly to the team’s efforts, it is Noah Heller who particularly shines with his ability to take control of the game. As a senior captain, Heller has consistently exhibited exceptional skill and leadership, solidifying his pivotal role within the Park offense. With numerous motivating factors driving their aspirations for victory, the upcoming match promises to be an enthralling encounter, as Park School aims to emerge triumphant.

A-Conference Championship

McDonogh vs Calvert Hall

Time: 7:30pm

Tickets: HERE

McDonogh

The McDonogh vs Boys’ Latin game certainly did not disappoint. The game was extremely tense from start to finish with multiple heart-clenching moments, especially in the closing moments. However, McDonogh emerged triumphant over Boys’ Latin with an 8-7 overtime victory in the MIAA A-Conference Semifinal. Boys’ Latin truly gave everything they had, with goalie Aiden Seibel standing on his head for most of the contest. He made some incredible saves down the stretch to keep the Lakers in the game. McDonogh stuck true to their gameplan and valued the ball every chance they got their hands on it. Smart passing led to limited turnovers which was crucial in a game with so much on the line. Drawing the attention of many Boys’ Latin defenders, this methodical approach ended up paying off as senior attackman McCabe Millon found the back of the net with a mere 1 minute and 54 seconds remaining in overtime. Undeniably, McDonogh stands as a strong contender for the nation’s top team, as evidenced by their performance on Tuesday. However, such accolades hold little significance unless the Eagles can secure consecutive MIAA A-Conference Championships. Expect McDonogh to leave no stone unturned, as they pour their hearts and souls into this upcoming matchup, with the ultimate goal of emerging as the victorious team.

Calvert Hall

Calvert Hall executed their game plan flawlessly on Tuesday night, securing a decisive victory over Loyola. The memories of their previous visit to Annapolis, where they suffered a disheartening defeat, still lingered. However, their return to the state capital marked a significant step towards championship glory. In a highly anticipated MIAA A-Conference Semifinal at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the Cardinals emerged triumphant with an 11-8 win over Loyola. Shuey Kelly, bound for Georgetown University, showcased his offensive prowess with an impressive three-goal performance, complemented by Wyatt Hottle’s contribution of two goals and three assists. Overcoming a three-goal deficit, Calvert Hall orchestrated a remarkable comeback, outscoring the Dons by a 6-2 margin, thereby solidifying their place in tonight’s MIAA A-Conference Lacrosse Championship. This marks the Towson school’s first appearance in the title game since their historic three-peat from 2017 to 2019 in the nation’s premier high school boys lacrosse league. Although their 2023 league campaign commenced with a disappointing 13-3 loss to St. Mary’s in late March, Calvert Hall’s midfield unit showcases exceptional depth and athleticism. Senior standout Noah Brannock epitomizes these qualities, seamlessly transitioning between defense and offense while showcasing remarkable stamina. Additionally, Donovan Lewis and Josh Nagy, both renowned for their prowess in other MIAA sports, bring invaluable versatility to the team’s offensive strategies, adeptly drawing slides and facilitating ball movement. At the faceoff-X, Calvert Hall benefits from the presence of the formidable Jackson Strickland, committed to the University of Richmond, whose exceptional 66% win rate exemplifies his ability to perform under high-pressure circumstances, as demonstrated in the Cardinals’ contest against Boys’ Latin. In summary, Calvert Hall’s depth, athleticism, and unwavering tenacity position them as formidable contenders, striving to claim their rightful place among the MIAA Lacrosse elite. Their journey to reclaim greatness hinges on surpassing the nation’s best team.

No.1 McDonogh vs No.5 Boys’ Latin

Overcoming St. Mary’s in such a commanding manner is no small feat, yet Boys’ Latin faces an imposing challenge in their upcoming encounter against McDonogh. Notably, these two schools have clashed in the playoffs a remarkable 12 times in the past 13 seasons. Under the guidance of Coach Farrell, who has helmed Boys’ Latin for eight years, the team has faced McDonogh in the postseason every year he has been with the Lakers. Highlighting the intense rivalry between these institutions, these two often culminate in season-ending clashes in the MIAA Lacrosse Playoffs.

McDonogh

McDonogh, currently ranked as the second-best team in the nation, maintains an exceptional record with just a solitary setback. The Eagles are the clear frontrunners to secure consecutive championship victories. The return of McCabe Million, who has recovered from a season-long injury, is poised to impact the upcoming MIAA Lacrosse Playoffs significantly. On the defensive front, AJ Marsh has displayed remarkable prowess, serving as a steadfast anchor and ensuring the goalie faces only desired shots. McDonogh cannot underestimate this Boys’ Latin squad regardless of how much success the Eagles have had this season.

Boys’ Latin

During their matchup against St. Mary’s, Boys’ Latin’s goalie, Dylan Cardigan, showcased exceptional shot-stopping abilities in the game’s early stages, contributing to the Lakers’ momentum. Furthermore, their control of the faceoff game granted them a comfortable advantage heading into halftime. Parker Hoffman took charge of this dominant aspect and even recorded a hat-trick. Once Boys’ Latin found its stride, the combined effect of their specialists left no doubt about the game’s outcome. Spencer Ford made a significant impact, netting six goals, with Higgins also recording a hat-trick of his own. Boys’ Latin is red-hot right now, seemingly clicking on all cylinders. Their dominant win over St. Mary’s is a solid confidence builder going into the MIAA Lacrosse Playoffs.

No.2 Calvert Hall vs No.3 Loyola

Following a disappointing conclusion to the regular season, Loyola urgently needed a resounding victory against St. Paul’s. Having faced the Calvert Hall Cardinals just a week ago, suffering a narrow 6-5 defeat, Loyola has an opportunity for redemption. Notably, Calvert Hall has yet to play a game since they triumphed over Loyola on Rivalry Tuesday, adding intrigue to their performance in this upcoming match. Loyola finds itself in a favorable position to confront Calvert Hall if it can replicate the level of play exhibited against St. Paul’s.

Calvert Hall

Throughout the season, Calvert Hall has exhibited unwavering strength and dominance, fielding a consistent lineup that delivers exceptional performances. Notably, Jackson Strickland and Ben Cuomo have displayed remarkable faceoff skills, boasting success rates of 67% and 57%, respectively, making a compelling case for being the top faceoff duo in MIAA Lacrosse. The offensive prowess of Wyatt Hottle and Shuey Kelly must be noticed, with Kelly assuming the Cardinal offense’s quarterback role, consistently finding Hottle to convert scoring opportunities. Defensively, Calvert Hall has exhibited solidity, evident in their low-scoring encounters that reveal their limited vulnerabilities.

Loyola

Loyola’s journey to the semifinal involved a victory against St. Paul’s, a game described by Don Zimmerman as a demonstration of the team’s complete performance this season. Senior attackman Owen Dixon, a committed University of North Carolina player, poses a formidable presence on the field, disrupting even the most meticulously devised defensive strategies. The defensive duo of Peter Laake, currently committed to Maryland, and Thomas Lala, committed to Colgate, ranks among the finest in the MIAA, instilling intimidation in opposing offenses. Goalkeeper Bennett Wright showcased an outstanding performance against St. Paul’s, making multiple exceptional saves against high-quality shots, thereby playing a crucial role in maintaining the team’s competitiveness. Moreover, Loyola’s faceoff specialist Kyle Powell skillfully dictated the game’s pace, effectively neutralizing St. Paul’s faceoff specialist. If Loyola maintains their current winning streak in the MIAA Lacrosse Playoffs, their specialist players could present a considerable challenge for Calvert Hall.

Loyola Blakefield

Loyola has had a remarkable start to A-Conference play, winning all six of their first games. Nonetheless, the team has suffered a setback in their last four games, with only one win and three losses against Boys’ Latin, Severn, and Calvert Hall. Despite these recent losses, the Dons have shown their resilience in close games, which may prove useful in future games. Loyola has secured quality victories by demonstrating their ability to overcome adversity during pivotal moments, including a nail-biting game against McDonogh, the only team to have defeated them this season.

Loyola’s offensive prowess is one of the main factors behind their success. The team uses several players off the bench to keep the team fresh and performing at their maximum capacity. Owen Dixon, a senior attackman and North Carolina commit, is a formidable presence on the field and can disrupt even the most well-planned defensive schemes. Matt Burnam and Mason, the other two attackmen, have stepped up their game during the final stretch of the season, and their performance will be critical for the Dons. Maryland commit Peter Laake and Thomas Lala are two of the top defensemen in the MIAA and their combination is intimidating for opposing offenses. Laake is currently committed to Maryland, while Lala is committed to Colgate. Both players are expected to play a key role in tonight’s game.

St. Paul’s

The St. Paul’s Crusaders hold a record of 8-7 with mixed performance in conference play, currently standing at 6-4. However, the Crusaders have played every A-Conference opponent to a close game this season and have no bad losses on their schedule. With the right combination of factors, St. Paul’s could very well upset Loyola in the upcoming game.

Senior faceoff specialist Daniel Davis is one of the key players on the Crusaders’ roster and has been dominant all year. Another critical player is senior captain Brody Atikinson, who is an expert finisher near the net. St. Paul’s midfield lines are deep and boast two full lines of midfielders. Although Michael Smyth is expected to return from injury, he may not be at 100% yet. Davis’s dominance at the faceoff-x, coupled with limited turnovers by the offense, will be critical to the Crusaders’ success. Both teams have skilled faceoff specialists, so the outcome of this battle will be fascinating to observe.

Next Game: Winner Plays No.1 McDonogh

St. Mary’s

The St. Mary’s lacrosse team is currently enjoying an impressive run of form, having secured five consecutive victories in the highly competitive MIAA A-Conference. Their recent triumph over Severn, with Nick Golini hitting the game-winning goal, was a testament to their resolute character and fighting spirit. Had Severn emerged victorious, the entire course of the MIAA A-Conference Tournament would have been altered, making the Saints’ victory all the more remarkable.

Despite not fielding as many players as some of their rivals in the MIAA A-Conference, the Saints possess a lineup of talented individuals who are capable of delivering outstanding performances on any given day. The starters, in particular, have been in exceptional form, thus rendering the need to dip into the bench unnecessary. Gavin Burlace, a senior midfielder committed to Notre Dame and hailing from a lacrosse-oriented family, is a prime example of the team’s impressive depth. His versatility allows him to excel in both midfield and attack positions, and his consistent scoring prowess makes him a vital asset for the team. Nick Golini, another standout player committed to Navy, is widely regarded as one of the best in his position in all of MIAA Lacrosse. Having earned captaincy this season, Burlace and Golini have become pivotal figures in the program, providing inspiration and leadership to their teammates.

Boys’ Latin

Boys’ Latin has demonstrated exceptional potential throughout the season, falling short only against McDonogh, Calvert Hall, and St. Mary’s, their sole defeats in A-Conference play. It is important to note that this team’s No.5 seed does not accurately reflect their capabilities in this tournament. They possess the ability to claim victory when performing at their peak, and their offense has been particularly impressive, courtesy of their talented young players. Junior attackman Spencer Ford, an accomplished athlete with a commitment to the University of Maryland, has exhibited remarkable intelligence and off-ball skills, propelling him to the top of the team’s leaderboard. The attack unit as a whole is strong, with Air Force commit Connor Sydnor joining Ford and filling in the lefty attack position in the absence of the team’s regular starter. Additionally, the Lakers’ midfielders are deserving of recognition, frequently rotating on both offense and defense, leveraging their depth to maintain energy throughout the game.

Furthermore, Boys’ Latin’s faceoff game is also a significant strength, as they deploy two highly skilled specialists in nearly every match. Thomas Moxley, a three-year varsity veteran committed to Washington and Lee, has been pivotal in taking faceoffs, while North Carolina commit Parker Hoffman has established himself in his junior year, displaying impressive speed and offensive ability that has kept him on the field beyond the initial faceoff. This formidable combination of top-tier specialists is anticipated to play a critical role in seizing possession and controlling the tempo of the game, especially in a high-scoring contest.

Shriver, who retired from coaching in 2015 after a storied 36-year career at Boys’ Latin, boasts an impressive record of 507 wins and only 140 defeats. MIAA Lacrosse Game of the Week (May 9, 2023)

Game: St. Mary’s vs Severn

Time: 4:15pm EST

Stream: HERE

Throughout the 1980s, as the MIAA was evolving, natural rivalries began to form. As teams continued to join the league, the tradition of Rivalry Day was established for the final week of the regular season. Some of the most notable rivalries include Boy’s Latin vs St. Paul’s, Gilman vs McDonogh, St. Mary’s vs Severn, Archbishop Spalding vs Mount St. Joseph, and Calvert Hall vs Loyola. However, when John Carroll joined the A-Conference, they did not have a natural rival, resulting in a bye week to conclude the regular season. In 2023, these rivalries carry significant weight, as nearly all of the matchups have crucial postseason implications.

Currently, we have a good understanding of which six teams will be advancing to the postseason tournament. While McDonogh has secured the No.1 seed, it is not a lock if they were to fall to Gilman. The No.2 spot will be determined today during the Calvert Hall vs Loyola game, with the loser dropping to No.3. The remaining three spots will be distributed among three schools that all hold a 6-3 record: St. Mary’s, St. Paul’s, and Boy’s Latin. With many different scenarios for how Rivalry Day will affect seeding for the playoffs, there are simply too many to break down here.

The top two seeds receive byes for the first round of the playoffs. The No.3 seed will host a home game against the No.6 seed on Friday for a chance to play the No.2 seed in the semifinals. Additionally, on Friday, the No.4 and No.5 seeds will compete for the opportunity to meet the No.1 seed in the playoffs.

Severn

The Severn Admirals have had a solid season with a record of 13-5, but their conference play record of 4-5 has yet to meet their initial expectations. Despite this setback, the Admirals hope to turn their fortunes around in the upcoming playoffs. They will rely heavily on their leading scorer, Jacob Todd, whose impressive skills make him a player to watch. Todd, who has committed to Princeton, exudes confidence whenever he possesses the ball. Another standout player on the team is junior midfielder Andrew Beard, who plays with the poise and skill of a seasoned veteran. With a commitment to Penn State, Beard’s skills will be integral to the Admirals’ success. However, the Beard household may experience some inner turmoil as Andrew’s father attended St. Mary’s, Severn’s upcoming opponent.

St. Mary’s

St. Mary’s lacrosse team is currently on a four-game winning streak and has shown impressive form in the MIAA A-Conference. Despite losing three conference games, two were closely contested battles against powerhouses McDonogh and Loyola. With the playoffs fast approaching, St. Mary’s has the opportunity to control their fate in the postseason.

The Saints boast a talented lineup of players who can excel on any given day. Although they do not play as many players as some of the other MIAA Lacrosse A-Conference schools, their starters have been delivering impressive performances, negating the need to dip into the bench. Gavin Burlace, is a senior midfielder committed to Notre Dame and hails from a lacrosse-oriented family. His versatility allows him to play midfield and attack positions, and he is a consistent scorer for the team. Nick Golini is another standout player for the Saints, committed to Navy. He has played a significant amount of time in attack and is widely considered one of the best in his position in the MIAA. Burlace and Golini have achieved captaincy this season and have become integral figures in the program.

MIAA Lacrosse Game of the Week (May 2, 2023)

Game: Calvert Hall vs Archbishop Spalding

Time: 4:00pm EST

Calvert Hall

Calvert Hall is currently in the midst of an intense battle for a coveted bye in the MIAA Lacrosse Playoffs. With only the top two seeds earning a bye, the Cardinals find themselves in the number three spot and are vying to climb higher. The quarterfinals of the playoffs commence on May 12th, making the upcoming matches against Archbishop Spalding, Severn, and Loyola Blakefield crucial for Calvert Hall’s playoff prospects.

Fortunately for the Cardinals, they have the advantage of senior Nicholas Steele, who recently returned from a knee injury and contributed two goals in his comeback game against Boys’ Latin. Legendary coach Bob Shriver believes that Steele will feature in the starting attack-line, bolstering Calvert Hall’s offensive arsenal alongside their top two scorers.

Moreover, the Cardinals’ midfield unit possesses exceptional depth and athleticism. Senior Noah Brannock epitomizes this, demonstrating remarkable stamina in transitioning seamlessly between defense and offense. In addition, the likes of Donovan Lewis and Josh Nagy, both of whom excel in other MIAA sports outside of lacrosse, bring invaluable versatility to the team’s offense, drawing slides and swinging the ball around with ease.

At the faceoff-x, Calvert Hall boasts the formidable Jackson Strickland, currently committed to the University of Richmond, whose 66% win percentage on the year speaks to his exceptional ability to compete in high-pressure games, as demonstrated in the Cardinals’ game against Boys’ Latin. Overall, Calvert Hall’s depth, athleticism, and tenacity make them a formidable contender as they vie for a spot among the MIAA Lacrosse elite.

Archbishop Spalding

Coach Brian Phipps faces a formidable challenge in moving on from last year’s loss of 15 highly skilled seniors, most of whom have moved on to play at the next level. The team’s youth has prompted Phipps to stress the importance of “learning,” with several sophomores and juniors being given significant playing time. Despite their inexperience, the team remains in contention for a playoff berth if they can emerge victorious in their next three MIAA lacrosse games. This would be a remarkable accomplishment for such a young squad, with their game against Calvert Hall being especially pivotal.

Offensively, the Cavaliers have struggled this season, largely due to a lack of experience. Their inability to score more than six goals per game has resulted in several close losses. In their nine losses this season, Spalding is putting up an average of 6.2 goals per game. In contrast, their victories have come when the team has scored an average of 12 goals per game. Defensively, the Cavaliers have been consistent, allowing an average of 8.8 goals per game. With only four games left in the season, Spalding must find a way to ignite their offense.

Coach Phipps can take pride in the play of senior pole, Logan Meighan, who is widely regarded as one of the top close defensemen in MIAA Lacrosse. Meighan will be tasked with shutting down the formidable Calvert Hall attack-line. Sophomore LSM Robby Hopper is another key player who can impact the game on both ends of the field, and he has shown a willingness to initiate transition opportunities.

Faceoffs could prove to be a decisive factor in the outcome of the game, as Spalding has struggled in this area since losing their starting FOGO to injury earlier this season. Phipps will be experimenting with different players taking faceoffs in an effort to win this critical aspect of the game, with the aim of making it a true skirmish and securing possession of the groundball. To have a chance at victory, the Cavaliers must work hard to keep the faceoffs competitive.

How the MIAA Differs From Other High School Leagues

MIAA lacrosse has undergone significant changes over the past five decades. For the past ten years, the conference has consisted of 11 teams, each playing 10 league games on Tuesdays and Fridays, with a bye week interspersed throughout the season. One of the distinctive features of the A-Conference is its use of NCAA rules, unlike most high school teams in the country that utilize federation rules. By playing under these regulations, high school players in the MIAA are better equipped for the college environment. However, when MIAA teams face out-of-conference opponents who use federation rules, the situation becomes more complicated. While some visiting teams are allowed to play with the NCAA ruleset, most are not, necessitating MIAA schools to accommodate them. Therefore, irrespective of the home team, if an MIAA team faces an out-of-conference opponent that employs federation rules, the MIAA team must adjust to the federation ruleset. While this issue does not affect this week’s MIAA Game of the Week matchup, it is an intriguing point worth addressing.

MIAA Lacrosse Game of the Week (April 25, 2023)

Game: Boys’ Latin vs Loyola Blakefield

Time: 4:15pm EST

Stream: HERE

In contemporary lacrosse, few programs have been as prolific in championship game appearances as Loyola and Boys’ Latin. The historical significance of their matchup is undeniable, as both teams possess a storied tradition and culture, which have produced an abundance of accomplished players that have transitioned to the next level.

Loyola Blakefield

Loyola has been nothing short of impressive this season, boasting a flawless record of 6-0 in A-Conference play and sitting atop the conference standings. The Dons have amassed quality victories, particularly in A-Conference play, where they have demonstrated their ability to overcome adversity in pivotal moments. Notably, Loyola managed to secure a victory over McDonogh, the only team to have defeated them this season, in a nail-biting game that saw McDonogh almost stage a comeback from a nine-goal deficit. Nevertheless, Loyola’s resiliency and composure allowed them to prevail. In another game against St. Paul’s, Loyola trailed by two goals entering the final quarter, but a remarkable five-goal run helped them clinch the win. This level of mental toughness is a rare attribute among most high school programs and should serve them well in crucial games.

Loyola’s success can be attributed in no small part to their high-powered offense that deploys several players off the bench to keep the team fresh and running at maximum capacity. Senior attackman and North Carolina commit Owen Dixon is a formidable presence on the field, capable of disrupting even the most carefully laid-out defensive schemes. However, the Dons’ faceoff game relies primarily on Bellarmine commit Niko Madden, which, while not necessarily detrimental to their performance, could prove to be a potential weakness in this upcoming matchup.

On the defensive end, Maryland commit Peter Laake has been making waves for his impressive performances over the past few years. Unfortunately, Laake suffered a cardiac injury on the field in April 2021, an instance of commotio cordis, where a projectile strikes the chest and disrupts a healthy heart’s electrical system. Despite the severity of the injury, Laake has made a remarkable recovery and is considered one of the best defensemen in the country, helping to anchor the Loyola defensive unit.

Boys’ Latin

Boys’ Latin has established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the A-Conference, boasting a 4-1 record with their sole defeat coming against McDonogh in a closely contested one-goal battle. While the Lakers suffered a couple of preseason losses, they bounced back with a convincing 9-6 win over Lawrenceville, one of the top teams in the nation. Despite their one conference loss, Boys’ Latin’s squad is loaded with talent across the field, making them a formidable opponent.

Their offense, in particular, has been a standout this season, thanks to their young and gifted players. Junior attackman Spencer Ford, a standout player committed to the University of Maryland, has had a stellar season, displaying impressive IQ and off-ball skills that have propelled him to the top of the team’s leaderboard. The attack unit, as a whole, is strong, with Air Force commit Connor Sydnor playing alongside Ford, filling in the lefty attack position due to the injury of the team’s usual starter. The Lakers’ midfielders are also noteworthy, as they frequently rotate on both offense and defense, utilizing their depth to maintain freshness throughout the game.

Boys’ Latin’s faceoff game is also a strength, with the team deploying two elite faceoff specialists in almost every match. Thomas Moxley, committed to Washington and Lee, has been taking faceoffs on the varsity squad for over three years, while North Carolina commit Parker Hoffman has been making waves in his junior year, demonstrating remarkable speed and offensive prowess that has kept him on the field even after the initial faceoff. This combination of top-tier specialists is expected to play a vital role in securing possession and controlling the pace of the game, particularly in a high-scoring affair.

MIAA Lacrosse Game of the Week – Mount St. Joseph vs St. Paul’s – 4/18/2023

Lacrosse has deep roots in the state of Maryland and is widely regarded as the state’s official sport. High school lacrosse, in particular, has a significant impact on the state’s culture and identity. The sport is deeply embedded in the fabric of Maryland’s communities, with many students growing up playing lacrosse and dreaming of playing for their high school team. While lacrosse is played at high schools across the country, Maryland high school lacrosse has a distinct character and style that sets it apart from other states. The Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association plays a major role in fueling this distinct character and style for the state today, but the MIAA can’t take all of the credit as the history of high school lacrosse in the state of Maryland dates back over 100 years.

The History of Maryland High School Lacrosse

The historical roots of lacrosse in Baltimore can be traced back to 1919, with the formation of the Maryland Scholastic Association. This conference was notably distinct from others across the country due to its inclusion of public, private, and parochial schools, all competing against each other. This arrangement allowed inner-city public schools from Baltimore to compete against surrounding county private schools, an uncommon occurrence at the time. Additionally, the Maryland Scholastic Association was notable for its emphasis on fair competition, as schools were able to compete at their appropriate level of competence, relative to their particular sport, without having to rely on school enrollment numbers. These factors contributed to the unique character and significance of the lacrosse scene in Baltimore during this period and the level of impact has evolved with the league over the past 100 years.

In contrast to the boys’ conference, the girls’ lacrosse scene did not have a similar structure, with no conference allowing for competition between public, private, and parochial schools. Notably, the top high schools in lacrosse at the time were all single-gendered, which meant that there was no immediate concern regarding Title IX regulations until this issue was brought to light. As a result of this disparity, the city schools were compelled to withdraw from the Maryland Scholastic Association and instead joined the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) in order to achieve greater parity between boys’ and girls’ lacrosse. In response, the private and parochial schools formed a new conference, the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA), in 1994, which excluded the public schools from competition. This restructuring of the high school lacrosse scene in Maryland had significant implications for both boys’ and girls’ athletics, as well as for the broader sporting culture of the state.

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (M.P.S.S.A.A.) employs a system of ranking member school teams based on the student population numbers of boys and girls at each school. In contrast, the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) adopted the Maryland Scholastic Association’s approach, which allowed for schools with a proven “track record” and tradition to be classified and ranked according to their level of “power” regardless of their physical size or student body numbers. This led to the creation of the ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ Conferences, with some flexibility for schools to request adjustments based on their specific circumstances. For example, Boys Latin football plays at the B-Conference level, while their lacrosse team competes at the A-Conference level. This stands in contrast to most high school leagues, which base playoffs and postseason play on the size of the school and the conference to which it belongs. Originally, only five Maryland Scholastic Association schools featured A-Conference lacrosse programs, including Boy’s Latin, Calvert Hall, Gilman, Loyola Blakefield, and St. Paul’s. When the MIAA was formed, these five schools were joined by six others, including Archbishop Spalding, John Carroll, McDonogh, Mount St. Joseph, Severn, and St. Mary’s Annapolis which makes up the A-Conference today. While the Maryland Scholastic Association was primarily composed of Baltimore area schools, the MIAA opened doors to other areas in Maryland, and many schools have since become coeducational.

The A-Conference of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) has long been renowned as one of the premier high school lacrosse leagues in the United States. It consistently features multiple top-ranked teams and has occasionally boasted the best team in the nation. Winning the MIAA championship is a coveted achievement for every team in the league. Notably, the league has seen a great deal of parity in recent years, with seven different schools claiming the championship title since 2010. Calvert Hall embarked on a historic three-peat run in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Such competitive balance is a testament to the depth of talent within the league, with every school capable of competing at a high level. The 2023 season has shown that the league’s teams are poised to once again showcase the thrilling and competitive lacrosse that has made the MIAA A-Conference such a prominent force in the sport.

Game: Mount St. Joseph vs St. Paul’s

Time: 4:00pm EST

Stream: HERE

Mount St. Joseph

Currently with a record of 7-5 overall and 0-4 in conference play, Mount St. Joseph finds themselves in a precarious situation heading into their upcoming game against St. Paul’s. While the Gaels have competed admirably in conference games thus far, they have struggled to finish off games and secure victories. However, there have been some bright spots for the team, most notably the outstanding play of junior goalie Charlie Weisman in their recent matchup against St. Mary’s. Weisman’s heroics kept the game close and he is expected to start in goal once again for the Gaels. Additionally, junior attackman Owen Cooper has been a crucial contributor, delivering clutch goals to keep the team in contention. In the midfield, Mount St. Joseph boasts two established playmakers in Corey Meyers (UMBC) and Jack Spears (Towson). Despite featuring a lineup with multiple experienced players, the team has also received contributions from younger players such as attackman Owen Craney. However, the team faces a critical test in their upcoming game against St. Paul’s, and a loss would all but extinguish their playoff hopes. With the talent on the roster, the Gaels have the potential to compete with any team in the MIAA A-Conference, but they will need to be firing on all cylinders if they hope to emerge victorious.

@Loyola Blakefield (LOSS 8-13)

Severn (LOSS 10-14)

Calvert Hall (LOSS 6-17)

At. Mary’s Annapolis (LOSS 7-11)

St. Paul’s

St. Paul’s Crusaders currently hold a record of 4-5 with a mixed performance in conference play. Despite losing a close game against Loyola Blakefield, who leads the conference, and squandering a late lead against Calvert Hall, the Crusaders appear to be headed in the right direction under the leadership of Head Coach Steven Settembrino. Settembrino, a former UMBC defensive player, and current defensive coordinator, is in his third season at the helm. One of the mainstays of the Crusaders’ lineup is senior faceoff specialist Daniel Davis, who has been dominant in recent games against Loyola and Calvert Hall. Another key contributor to the team’s offensive output is senior captain Brody Atikinson, a lethal finisher near the net. St. Paul’s midfield lines are deep, boasting two full lines of midfielders, but an injury to Michael Smyth has hampered the team’s output. However, the key to this upcoming game for the Crusaders will be Davis. If he can dominate at the faceoff-x and the offense can limit turnovers, St. Paul’s will be able to maintain momentum. That said, the Crusaders’ young attackmen have struggled at times, which is a potential vulnerability that Mount St. Joseph could exploit in this MIAA Lacrosse matchup.
