They Can Take Our Lives, But They’ll Never Take Our Wikipedia

The internet is trying to tell you something today, January 18th, about two bills in Congress (SOPA and PIPA).

Check out Google, Wikipedia, Reddit, or a wide range of sites that are participating in a protest in response to concerns over the future of the open web.

LaxAllStars is a byproduct of the internet age, along with the idea that a core pillar of the web is open expression and sharing of information and ideas. In our opinion, if these bills were to pass it would put future like-minded entrepreneurs in jeopardy.

But hey that’s just like, our opinion, man.

Take a minute today to get informed on the issues and make up your own mind. Al Gore invented this series of tubes a while back that could be helpful if you’re looking for a way to easily access information.

2011 LAS Reader Survey Highlights

Lol cat lacrosse survey computer
Yes, yes you can.

To everyone who took the time to fill out our 2011 LaxAllStars.com Reader Survey, a huge THANK YOU is in order. We’ve read every response  and we’re continually amazed by the passion many of you have for the sport.

Since you took the time to share, we wanted to give back by showcasing just a few of our favorite responses along with a quick reaction from the LAS peanut gallery.

But first, check out this word cloud made up of all the survey responses. Pretty awesome.

Now on to our favorite quotes from the 2011 Reader Survey…

Survey Question: Is there anything…you’d like to share with the staff at LaxAllStars.com? (Honest feedback, ideas, criticisms, etc.)

“I love this website… have Connor change his cable provider so he can talk about MLL next year…don’t sell out, keep things simple and you will keep on finding success.”

Words to live by.

“Overall LAS Crew – 2 Thumbs Up. I only have two so it makes it tough to do more…Also, come to San Diego – i’ll buy you a burrito.”

Who has two thumbs and and likes that comment? This guy. San Diego burrito’s are so good we might just have to take you up on your offer.

“Keep it up, I greatly enjoy reading your blogs while I visit the bathroom. Your blogs are the perfect length.”

Ummm thank you? We guess? Let’s just move on.

“This may sound corny but I appreciate that you guys feel like any dude (or bro) who I’m friends with and/or grew up with.”

Not corny at all. Maybe we could all meet up with the burrito guy and hang out.

“No one says “Cali.” Tell everyone from every other state this information. Every time someone says “Cali” instead of California it just pisses me and everyone from California off. Thanks!”

Noted. This public service announcement brought to you by the  people who say ORY-GUN and BOI-SEE, and those who know how to correctly pronounce Houston Street in Manhattan.

“Good luck with the massive spreadsheet this is going to generate…”

Truer words have never been written.

Stay tuned for more from the 2011 Lax All Stars Reader Survey, and thank you again to all who participated.

Return Of The Old School: Salmon Shenanigans

This week’s submission comes via Twitter from Michael Gialanella (@mjgialanella) who was perusing the great blog Uni-watch this week and came across an interesting photo buried in the news ticker. .

Just when you thought corporate endorsements have gone too far.. Let’s just say something fishy is going on here.

“Weirdest promotional photos ever: 100-year-old pics of the New Westminister Salmonbellies lacrosse team at a local salmon cannery — in full uniform (XXL-sized thanks to Dan Richardson).”

BONUS LINK FOR THE LADIES: Also in the same links section of Uniwatch was an enterprising mother who made a corset out of a lacrosse jersey. Fall fashion here we come.

Talk about multi-purpose equipment. Back in the olden days, lacrosse players could rip the duck and then go catch the trout.

Lets get a CAPTION CONTEST up in here. Use your wittiest line and post it in the comments.  Winner (judged by LAS) gets a random grab bag of awesomeness for LAS!

Crab cakes and football (not to mention a little lacrosse), that’s what Maryland does. What Maryland doesn’t do is uniforms.

Check out the reaction that the Terps very New School uniforms got on Twitter (Ed’s Note: Are we really quoting Jim Rome now? Oh dear) on Monday:

Thankfully, Kevin McDermott is doing his best to remind us all what the usually classy Maryland athletic equipment is all about. He tweeted his submission to @LaxAllStars saying:

“Just when I thought you couldn’t possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this… and totally redeem yourself!”

Thanks for the submission Kevin!  That stick looks like it could still be a gamer today!  Leather pocket seems almost perfect!

How Bad Do You Want It?

All men are created equal, some just work harder in the off-season.
– Emmitt Smith

The MLL is over. Camp season is done. Your helmet and gloves have probably been traded in for soccer cleats or football pads. Unless you are honing your skills in a boxla league or with a travel team this fall, it’s officially the off-season for a lot of lacrosse players out there.  Even the college guys are “taking it easy” (ha!) with fall ball. So, what are YOU doing to get better?

These videos were passed along to me by a friend who was pumped about college football season starting and I couldn’t help but share. The first video is titled “How Bad Do You Want It?” and features former East Carolina running back Giavanni Ruffin along with a talk from Eric Thomas aka “The Hip Hop Preacher”.

“With the NFL lockout in place over the summer, some athletes were taking it easy, enjoying the time off, and some were trying to follow their dreams and be successful.”

(via Greyskale Multimedia)

BONUS

If you enjoyed the message that The Hip Hop Preacher was putting down in the first video, take a look at the full talk where he focuses on what it takes to excel in the classroom.  Just like on the field challenges, working hard in school is another example of opportunity that begs the same question: How bad do you want it?

Last week we looked at the Chocktaw “cousin” of lacrosse and this week we dive back into the history books of the game to look at the 1928 Olympics.

Lacrosse was a demonstration sport in 1928, but that didn’t stop these hardy souls from showing off on the highest stage Teams from Canada, Great Britain, and the United States participated in the event, and each team ended up with a 1-1 record.

Scores:

August 5, 1928 – United States 6 – Canada 3

August 6, 1928 – Great Britain 7 – United States 6

August 7, 1928 – Canada 9 – Great Britain 5

The US team was made up of collegiate lacrosse players from Johns Hopkins, and if you feel like some light reading, I’d suggest this diary from the Smithsonian’s online collection which details Baltimore native Louis S. Nixdorff’s experiences at the games. He complains about playing games on back-to-back days and details the long boat ride over the Atlantic. A great read for the history buffs.

Some other highlights of the 1928 Olympics:

– Johnny Weissmuller, who later appeared in several Tarzan movies, won two gold medals in swimming.
– These games were the first to bear the name “Summer Olympic Games”.
– Germany returned to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1912, after being banned from the 1920 and 1924 Games. The German team finished second in the 1928 medal count.

Or want to share your knowledge of the different variations of the Native American ancestry of lacrosse? Drop a comment below or hit us up at info@lacrosseallstars.com!

Here’s some more information about Toli from a UGA team called the Flying Rats:

“Toli, also known as kapucha toli or simply stickball, is a traditional Native American game that has been played for at least 400 years. It has also been called the “little brother of war”, as it, at one time, had been used to settle disputes between Native American groups. These games often involved hundreds of people per team, were played on fields that were several miles long and lasted from sunrise to sunset.”

Share your knowledge or questions about of the history of Toli in the comments section.

There’s nothing we love more than having a true Grow The Game moment to share with the masses.

To that point, Here is some 1998 video showing how new lacrosse was to Texas and especially the sportscasters who had trouble describing it to the masses.

[fvplayer src=”https://youtube.com/watch?v=Sdb18pfI-xM” splash=”https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Sdb18pfI-xM/hqdefault.jpg” caption=”1998 GCLA Championship Game- Beaumont News Coverage”]

As great as the bucket helmets and football practice jerseys were back in the day, the sportscasters in this clip did their best to take the shine off.

Did he just say "LACLOSS"?
"The subject is to carry the ball and put it in the net more than the other guys."

Now, I’m not trying to be mean-spirited but seriously? These sportscasters looked and sounded like they went to the “Boom goes the dynamite” school of sports journalism.

Thankfully, we know the game in Texas has been booming since 1998. Keep that Grow Texas Lacrosse train rolling, fellas.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Last week we had our first ever running diary of a mysterious black and white film showing two teams playing with wooden sticks and bucket helmets from back in the day.

What teams were they? What year was it? I had no idea but (wrongly) assumed it was from the 50’s.

Thankfully, a group of people  much smarter than I were determined to find the answers.

It started with commenters laxfan and 2ifbyc musing that the team in black must be Army and then BHSVideoDad brought his filming expertise saying:

“From looking at the cars passing by on the street at the beginning, it must be 1964 +/- 3 years. I love the opening fade in and somewhere in the early minutes the projector rolls through a bunch of frames. Reminds me of my Super-8 days although this must have been 16 mm.

They wore short shorts in those days.”

Some more sleuthing by our own Will Patton confirmed that the stadium was …

“Army’s Michie Stadium, which was opened in 1924.  You can see in the photo (below)  that the stadium is adjacent to a body of water, and the entrance the cadets are coming in is still in existence today with the same posts and a road between the stadium and water.”

Will Patton's CSI sleuthing on the Old School video

We were getting close.

The mystery was almost solved. But who was the white team? Would we ever know? Enter reader Steve Bair (@CoachDrSteve on Twitter) who cracks the case wide open.

“After hours of research, I have in 100% confidence that the game was in fact not against Syracuse.  It is, in fact, drum roll please, the Cornell Big Red!  Cornell ended up winning this contest 16-15.

…After looking at every Army lacrosse score from 1923, when Mr. Patton pointed out the stadium was built, until 1980, only twice has Army lost at home with the score being at least 13-12 (that was the score when the clipped ended).

There was a 16-17 loss to Cornell on May 29th, 1971  and a 15-16 loss to Navy on June 3rd, 1978.

The Navy white jerseys clearly displayed the “Navy” logo across chest with blue shoulders while the Cornell whites had only the numbers.”

1971 Cornell team in white jerseys:

1978 Navy white jerseys:

As if it couldn’t get even cooler, the 1971 Cornell squad won the first ever NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship tournament that year with a 13-1 record. They beat Maryland 12-6 in the finals and were led by Hall of Fame coach Richard M. Moran.

Mystery solved. Just goes to show you the kind of lax-fiends we have reading  this site.

We went from a video with no information whatsoever, to a full story and background on a historic lacrosse team. Amazing work. Even better story.

Go clean out the attic and relive your glory days. Submit your Old School photos and stories to info@lacrosseallstars.com.

This week we’re changing things up and getting a live action look at Old School in action. The team names aren’t included and neither is the score. But that won’t keep me from watching all of the footage and getting a feel for what it was like to play the game with real bucket helmets and wood sticks.

Lets go on a journey back in time, shall we?

Note: watching in full screen is recommended.

(Via Gregory Fitzsimmons on Vimeo.)

0:05 – This stadium is empty and I have no idea which teams are playing . Doesn’t matter, its still lax-tacular. (Update: commenter laxfan points out that the dark team is likely Army)

0:10 – Just got started and the lack of sound is killing me. To spice things up I’m listening to Yakety Sax as background music from now on. Yakety Sax makes everything better.

[fvplayer src=”https://youtube.com/watch?v=ZnHmskwqCCQ” splash=”https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ZnHmskwqCCQ/hqdefault.jpg” caption=”-Yakety Sax- Music”]

1:10 – Close defender in the white jersey hit by an invisible sniper and almost falls  out of his Converse All-Stars as the attack hammers home a goal. The defender is going to really going to get a good ribbing at the sock hop later.

1:18 – #17 on the face for the dark team pulls the ol’  “I’m a little teapot” move and then forgets to scoop through the gb. Some things never change.

2:00 – Earthquake!… or someone dropped the camera.

3:21 – White longstick leading a fast break to a quick goal. Those poles look like they weigh 15 lbs. Impressive.

4:49 – Gee-Golly what a sloppy play by the face off man. Are they dancing the Charleston or trying to pick up the ball?

Tip: Really crank the Sax here for maximum effect.

6:05 – Keep getting glimpses of the football field goal posts in the dead middle of the endzone. Whoever thought that was a good idea again?

7:53 – Dark jersey team scores again on a beauty of a high bounce shot. White team’s defense is a real liability out there.

Some initial observations: Overall the pace of play is still comparable to the modern game but the equipment seems a beast to deal with. Lots of gbs and missed passes but no head shots or dirty play that I can see. Lets fast forward a litte bit.

From what I can tell, white is running a 1-4-1 and I’m not quite sure what dark is running (2-3-1 maybe?) .

17:07 – Want proof that the textbook L-fast break has been taught since the dawn of time? The dark jersey team just ran one that was a beaut.

18:26 – Wait a minute…where did the men on horses come from? No way this game was played in the horse and buggy days, right? We need some confirmation.

(Note: cars are seen later on. Turns out it’s mounted police checking out some lax before they go out and arrest bootleggers.)

Enough with the Yakety Sax soundtrack. Time for the #1 song from 1955. Tutti-Frutti by the one and only Little Richard.

[fvplayer src=”https://youtube.com/watch?v=ElwgN8ah4po”]

19:30 – Lefty white attackman turtles and screws up a 1-on-none on the crease. That was NOT the bee’s knees…

19:37 – …unfortunately the dark defense muffs the ensuing ground ball and the result is a garbage goal going the other way. Little Richard says “Wop-bop-a-loo-mop alop-bam-boom!

20:05 – The 1950’s version of ball boys aren’t wearing helmets on the endline. Could this be because the shots arent going as fast or do they just not know any better? Remember that this was a time when seatbelts were optional and asbestos and lead paint were great to have around the house.

24:00 – After a slow start, white is starting to dominate the time of possesion. The wood shafts mean that the best shots in this game come from textbook over the top bounce shots to the corners. Let that be a lesson for all of you sidearm rippers out there.

26:28 – Two goals by the team in the dark jerseys! Smelling a comeback even though I have no idea what the score is right now.  The vintage gear has me hypnotized at this point.

27:45 – Even back then defensemen were getting into trouble for egregious pushes in the back. #31 was none too pleased because the attackman flopped like an Italian soccer player on that play.

30:13 – Huuuuuuuge save by the keeper. Snatched that shot right out of the air.

31:45 – Yet another long stick starting a fast break for the white team. The defense was caught napping big time.

Over half an hour of  action and the rest of the highlights start to blur together. Did you see something that I missed?

One thing that we can be sure of is that the athleticism and team concepts of the game are still evident even back when the gear was Old School.

Was this what you expected? See anything that I missed? Call it out in the comments.

Special thanks to Blake Gaudet for finding the video. Wouldn’t expect anything less from such a Woozley guy and recent state champion High School lax coach.

Old School Thursday is back with a vengeance. Here's a question for you: what do you get when a bonanza of old school sticks meet a newly created New York City program in need of equipment? Certified awe-inspiring GTG in action, that's what.

We knew that New York based CityLax does great work, but this week’s story is something else. Old School equipment given New School life as a team based just outside the inner city of New York picks up the sport for the first time.

Harbor School lax

LAS Reader, Streaker Sports owner and Citylax volunteer, Grant Hewitt explains the amazing story behind this treasure trove of nostalgic gear. It’s not just Old School, it’s Old School that is being used right now:

“The sticks (and gloves)…were all items donated to CityLax via the youth programs of Chatham, Madison, Summit (all NJ) as well as Darien and New Cannan, CT.

After they were collected last spring, they were then distributed to the New York Harbor School on Governor’s Island in NYC.  The NYHS is trying to start up a lacrosse team to compete in the PSAL (public school athletic league) next season, so I’ve been down there twice a week helping coach, and to get the kids up to speed.

Most of the sticks I have no idea about (the red ’73 one?) but I really got nostalgic when I found the Gait strung Turbo (6 diamond mesh with 3 hockey lace shooting strings), because that was my first stick in 5th grade playing in NJ.

Some of the dye jobs are amazing, notably the black-white-hunter green STX Octane that has “WAVE” written on the top over the green for Delbarton; there’s also a black dyed Brine M1 with “Princeton” in orange across the top.      There’s a handful of other old school bottle neck style sticks I included photos of, and a solid pair of leather palmed Brine L-35s.”

Check out the Harbor School’s website or Facebook page to learn about the school.

Really want to help? Become a certified GTG’er and donate your time or money to help expand the sport to new areas. Donations to the lacrosse program can be made through their Crowdwise page. Passing along your passion for the game of lacrosse to even one young player will be worth it.

Now on to Grant’s photos:

Old School Lacrosse

Our first set of Old School photos is so vintage it will make the inner lax-head in you drool just a bit.

This Boston Blazers M1 Brine Lacrosse Head was sent in by Ryan Hoffmeister of Cascade Sports. A little fading has set in but you can clearly see that this stick fits in with the Blazers color scheme of black, orange, white, and green.

Thanks for sharing Ryan. Always great to hear from a Blazers fan from the old days.

And don’t look now but we have a bonus picture coming your way. Submitter Daniel Seltzer gets Old School while developing the sport in Buenos Aires.

“(This picture) was taken near 2008 when I started playing lacrosse in Argentina…We played in a jai alai court, with roller hockey goals.”

GTG on a jai alai court and showing off the bucket helmet. Nothing better than that in our opinion. Thanks Daniel.

Plus did you know that jai alai balls can travel to speeds upwards of 170 mph, that some people call it the “fastest spectator sport”, and that left handed players aren’t allowed to play?

Learn some more about jai alai in this informative documentary.

Old School Lacrosse

A loyal reader has submitted another amazing batch of photos.  That means you get treated to another Old School Thursday on Lax All Stars.

This week’s pictures are so good it should be featured in a magazine or coffee table book. Very professional. Very colorful. Very OLD SCHOOL.

Submitter Bill explains:

“Attached are three shots of one of my old dominator’s I recently strung up.

A few things…

I loved this head in high school. Maybe it’s a little stiffer than a turbo or viper, but for the most part I just thought it looked awesome.

For the cross lace, I’ve been using flat x-lace from The Stringers Shack. As the name suggests, it’s flat instead of round. I was worried that it would get twisted as you string, but for the most part it doesn’t. I think the increased surface area works out nicely when stringing a wide diamond traditional. It probably wouldn’t work if you were trying to do something with smaller diamonds, twists, or coils. Overall, I think it’s good stuff.

The shaft is hickory from Hickory Lacrosse. It was a fathers day gift last year. Heavier then my titanium, but poke checks and lifts are a lot more effective with this. I’m not sure which I like better, I go back and forth.

I usually play with a edge (old ones that I get for $10-$20 at Play It Again Sports, I haven’t tried the new 2010 edge yet) Playing with this really gives you an appreciation for offset heads.”

Keep the pictures coming Bill! And that goes for the rest of Lax Nation as well.

Updated – Sisters Annual Lacrosse Invitational: GTG In Action

Over the weekend I traveled out to Sisters, Oregon with West Linn High School’s JV squad (along with a 7th/8th Youth Team), to participate in the Sisters Annual Lacrosse Invitational.

When I wasn’t busy eating hamburgers and hanging by the RV provided by some great WLHS parents, I snapped some photos to show how Growing The Game is alive and well in Oregon.

Photo blog time…

30+ players in a school bus at 6:30 am on a Saturday.

Pretty much a miracle that they all made it on time. Even though some were still in their PJ’s…

Nice fields but cloudy skies and the wind was gusting pretty hard.

Somehow we escaped the rain and I even got a little sunburn going.  NICE!

Tall trees and great lacrosse. Each team played 4 games in one day so endurance was key.
Lake Oswego & Sunset pictured.

There were 16 JV teams at the SALI from Roseburg to Sprague, and all the way out to Bend & Summit HSs as well.

UPDATE: Even Montana and SW Washington were represented! GTG to the max.

The full bracket showing all of the JV teams that made the trip.
Bottom half of the JV bracket.
The West Linn Lions JV's relaxing and waiting for our next game. Lots of characters in this bunch.
Sadly I wasn't able to snap any photos of our squad in action because the team was too busy winning the whole tourney.

The high altitude was a factor all day, but the team gutted out a 4-3 victory over Lake Oswego in the Championship game. Great job, boys!

Update: There’s even additional coverage from the Sisters Nugget Newspaper with some great quotes from Bill Rexford, head coach of the Sisters HS Outlaws. Over 1,000 players came out last weekend.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

Reader David Salmon has a lot to say.  Not only does he have an amazing submission but he also has some interesting thoughts on the LAS view of lacrosse in jolly olde England. I’ll let him explain:

I know you guys always love to see some old school lax, so here’s some 1998 flags final action from the UK.

I’m begrudgingly sending you guys this, as the impression I get about from laxallstars about English Lacrosse has always been a very poor, badly sourced one. Words like ‘Foppish’ and ‘Twee’ would not be out of place in a lot of your analysis of the game out here, which is largely inaccurate and paints us in an unfairly backward light…

Anyway, enjoy the video, the music in particular is something a bit special.

First, thanks for reading David. Also a big thank you for the first ever controversy in our Show LAS Your Old School series.

Now I’m not going to pretend that I understood every word in David’s email but after using the handy dandy internet I think some of the Grow The Game passion we have here at LaxAllStars was lost in translation over the pond.

Our coverage isn’t meant to be “foppish” ( “adjective for affecting extreme elegance in dress and manner”) or even “twee” (“adjective for  excessively or affectedly quaint, pretty, or sentimental”) but more respectful and honest. Hopefully that’s all cleared up now. Nobody on the LAS crew wants to have to resort to Revolutionary War blasts and Paul Revere references.  No anarchy in the UK over here!

Onward to David’s amazing video of Cheadle vs Heaton Mersey from 1998.

Warning: the music is as amazing as advertised.

We’ve seen some incredible stuff in the Old School series, but this week’s picture might take the cake. Connor Wilson (AKA “The Master of Finding Random Lax Stuff Online”) found it and the rest of the Lax All Stars crew is still scratching their heads.

Look at the picture below.

See if you can find the following things:

– impossibly short shorts

– football helmet probably worn by one of the Packers in the Ice Bowl

– pajama bottoms

– horizontal shoulder stripes

– possible 1970 Chevy Impala

See anything else I may have missed?

I’ve reviewed it at least a dozen times, and I still can’t figure out what the guy in the football helmet is doing. What team is he on? Does he know that his football mask won’t stop a lacrosse shot to the face? Is he on offense or defense?

So many questions.

Old School Thursday is here and prepare for a warm glass of nostalgia coming your way. New to the game? Old School lacrosse photos are a Lax All Stars staple every Thursday. Send in yours today!

The year was 1974. The Godfather II was headlining Hollywood, All In The Family was #1 on TV, and people were actually reading about a seagull who can talk. Yes, people really read Jonathan Livingston Seagull. And not as a joke or punishment.

And these swarthy gentlemen were patrolling the lacrosse fields of Holland, Michigan.

Hope College’s Head Coach Michael Schanhals submitted the following photos explaining:

“Here are some shots from our first year in 1974.  They were sent to me by Tim VanHeest who founded the program.  Chaplain VanHeest, father of Tim, was our coach when I played in the 80’s.  Great guy… great times.”

Hope College At Ohio State, 1974

Is it just me or does the guy with the ‘stache in picture #2 look like a young Same Elliot? You be the judge.
